ok... forget the beatles for this, they are out of the equasion..

but who was the best pop group? as in guitar based r n b derived act, not a watertwatesque manufactured puppet act.

who delivered the best string of good time, foot tapping, melodic songs?... im not asking for the 'coolest' or the most inovative, but quality 3 minute no brainers...

erm, why does it have to be guitar-based r'n'b? (I know that's rich coming from such a big indie fan)

Personally I would have to say Abba as best pop group.

Madness for me, followed by the Smiths.

deffo madness, but i think the smiths are too 'cool' , being more serious and technically sound.

For me, it's a toss up between four:

Abba, Blondie, Madness & Pet Shop Boys

I'm not a fan as such, but Madness are certainly contenders and Pet Shop Boys in their prime.
Abba the Pet Shops Boys and Blondie i agree are great pop bands also i think take that, bananarama and erasure(old material) have great pop music under their belts
Seeing as I can't vote for the amazing 'The Saturdays' then it will have to be PSB or Abba :P

The Smiths were not a pop group really. The Undertones were much more of a pop group.

Madness, PSB's and Erasure all fit the bill. Bananarama too. Blondie grew into being a top pop band.

The Smiths made some great pop records though. "Panic" is definitely 'pop' though it's not one of my favourites.

im surprised theres not many nominations from the glam era... often, by some, vaunted as 'the golden age' of pop..... but that might be down to YOUR ages! :P

i still think they were too serious, not knocking them, but madness p*** all over them for POP.

True, The Smiths were more 'indie' I suppose. Some people class Madness as 'ska' but on the whole they were definitely a pop band, and a great one at that!

madness were a contemporary pop group, and the pop flavour of the time (when they started) was ska...

no arguments though about their quality, and their appeal, pop at its best.

id suggest a timeline..

the beatles

slade

abba

madness

pet shop boys?

then it tends to lose its direction by the 90's (late 80's) with watertwats pop production line taking over and removing individuality, inovation and creativity. (values the 5 groups ive highlighted have in abundance)

I'll echo Slade, Madness and the Pet Shop Boys and throw in T-Rex.
