Posted December 19, 200816 yr Welcome to Friday Evenings favourite thread! A weekly review of what`s hot and not. As usual, the top films, dvds, top tv, top albums, the flashback, and returning a bit later for the up to minute latest Singles/Songs this week. The Top Films: Compiled by Screen International for UK Box Office. w/k ending 24th Dec 2008 01 NE THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (making £2752,132 in a week) 02 01 MADAGASCAR 03 02 2 CHRISTMASES 04 NE INKHEART (making £700,146) 05 NE RAB NE BANA DI JODI (making £403,842) 06 03 TRANSPORTER 3 07 04 THE CHANGELING 08 05 QUANTUM OF SOLACE 09 06 BOY OF LIES 10 07 LAKEVIEW TERRACE We well remember the 50s original B-movie of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Is originality difficult? Sometimes re-makes are lazy. Thumbs up to people who can come up with fresh ideas. Personally I can not stand re-makes. Whether it be songs, tv series, or films. Leave them alone, and make something that has new ideas! Here come the top dvd films: Compiled from Sales/Rentals by DTR. 01 01 THE DARK KNIGHT 02 02 MAMMA MIA 03 03 HANCOCK 04 04 HELLBOY 2 05 NE STAR WARS: CLONE WARS 06 05 KUNG FU PANDA 07 09 INDIANA JONES: KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULLS 08 08 ANGUS THONGS AND PERFECT SNOGGING 09 07 THE MUMMY (TOMB OF....) 10 06 WALL.E Pretty static dvd film chart. JAMES MORRISON crashes back up the album top 40 (combined) at 34. FALL OUT BOY at 44 (the only top 50 new entry). With TAKE THAT easily taking the Number One on week 3, selling over twice as many as Leona. Flashback time, and a exciting one this week in 1980...That brought us the Chapman shooting of John Lennon, with the BBC paying tribute on Monday 8th Dec 1980 with a showing of one of the films. In the Albums, in Record Business/MRIB it look like this for Christmas 1980: 01 01 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 02 05 DOUBLE FANTASY - JOHN LENNON 03 06 GREATEST HITS - DR HOOK 04 02 GUILTY - BARBRA STRIESAND 05 11 BARRY - BARRY MANILOW 06 10 CHART EXPLOSION - VARIOUS 07 NE FLASH GORDON - QUEEN/OST 08 09 NOT THE NINE O`CLOCK NEWS - TV CAST 09 03 AUTOAMERICAN - BLONDIE 10 07 INSPIRATIONS - ELVIS PRESLEY 11 08 ZENYATTA MONDATTA - THE POLICE 12 12 JAZZ SINGER - NEIL DIAMOND/OST 13 14 MANILOW MAGIC - BARRY MANILOW 14 25 20 GOLDEN GREATS - KEN DODD 15 16 ABSOLUTELY - MADNES 16 04 SOUND EFFECTS - THE JAM 17 21 SING 20 NUMBER ONE HITS - BROTHERHOOD OF MAN 18 17 KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER - ADAM AND THE ANTS 19 18 FOOLISH BEHAVIOUR - ROD STEWART 20 13 CLASSICS FOR DREAMING - JAMES LAST New material from ABBA, outselling them all in 1980. JOHN LENNON`s murder bumping up his album sales. The NOT THE NINE O`CLOCK NEWS team of MEL SMITH, GRIFF RHYS JONES, and PAMELA STEPHENSON (BILLY CONNOLLY`s wife) doing great, and taking a pop at ABBA on the show with a song entitled "SUPER DOOPER!" We awaited Antmania, as ADAM ANT awaited too. Barry Mania, catipulted him all over the chart...Barry Manilow absolutely fantastic. People may well scoff, but it is absolutely essential that everybody goes to a Barry concert before they die. That sounds a bit dodgy, but he is a fantastic showman, and you ain`t lived until you have. BARBRA STRIESAND was teaming up with BARRY GIBB, and got a couple of top 40 singles, and a number 2 album out of it. Those K-TEL people gave us an equivalent to the later NOW! series with CHART EXPLOSION. QUEEN gave us the latest incarnation of FLASH GORDON...Is it really "Wash his body in Ajax?" Surprisingly KEN DODD in the 1980 chart...again you must see him live, more value for money...and you won`t go home in the dark! BROTHERHOOD OF MAN did an album of covers...they only had 3 number ones themselves, so covered everyone elses! JAMES LAST is another great performer...Remember "THE SEDUCTION?" I particularly remember SLADE in 1980...they performed at the Reading Festival in Aug 1980, and so sang a "live" rendition of MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY". On Sunday Evening at 8pm on the GOLD stations around Britain...NODDY HOLDER will be playing the 1973 chart, when the song first topped the chart. The 1980 Singles...slightly different with Record Business, but my was that Xmas Top Three close: 01 03 STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON 02 02 NO ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA - ST WINIFRED`S SCHOOL CHOIR 03 01 STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE 04 06 DE DO DO DO DE DA DA DA - POLICE 05 04 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 06 RE HAPPY XMAS WAR IS OVER - JOHN LENNON/PLASTIC ONO BAND 07 05 EMBARASSMENT - MADNESS 08 12 ANT MUSIC - ADAM AND THE ANTS 09 08 RUNAWAY BOYS - STRAY CATS 10 07 BANANA REPUBLIC - BOOMTOWN RATS 11 14 FLASH - QUEEN 12 RE IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 13 19 RABBIT - CHAS N`DAVE 14 11 LADY - KENNY ROGERS 15 15 LIES/DON`T DRIVE MY CAR - STATUS QUO 16 09 TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT - SPANDAU BALLET 17 17 LOVE ON THE ROCKS - NEIL DIAMOND 18 10 DO YOU FEEL MY LOVE - EDDY GRANT 19 29 NEVER MIND THE PRESENTS - BARRON KNIGHTS 20 26 OVER THE RAINBOW-YOU BELONG TO ME - MATCHBOX 21 35 THIS WRECKAGE - GARY NUMAN 22 23 LONELY TOGETHER - BARRY MANILOW 23 16 CELEBRATION - KOOL AND THE GANG 24 13 THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE 25 28 TOO NICE TO TALK TO - THE BEAT 26 38 DO NOTHING - SPECIALS 27 24 DON`T WALK AWAY - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA 28 18 ROCK N`ROLL AIN`T NOISE POLLUTION - AC/DC 29 27 DECEMBER WILL BE MAGIC AGAIN - KATE BUSH 30 42 IT`S HARD TO BE HUMBLE - MAC DAVIES 31 22 I COULD BE SO GOOD FOR YOU - DENNIS WATERMAN/GERARD KENNY 32 25 EARTH DIES SCREAMING/DREAM A LIE - UB40 33 33 LOOKING FOR CLUES - ROBERT PALMER 34 39 WHO`S GONNA ROCK YOU - THE NOLANS 35 32 BLUE MOON - SHOWADDYWADDY 36 21 I`M COMING OUT - DIANA ROSS 37 41 MY GIRL - ROD STEWART 38 37 LORRAINE - BAD MANNERS 39 20 NEVER KNEW LOVE LIKE THIS BEFORE - STEPHANIE MILLS 40 43 IF I COULD ONLY MAKE YOU CARE - MIKE BERRY We feel for THE JACKSONS who were just out of the 40 in 1980 at 41 with"HEARTBREAK HOTEL"...not the Elvis song, but another. The top 3 was very close in 1980, all the 3 including the dreaded "Grandma" were pushing over 150,000 by Friday 19th Dec 1980. Grandma peaked at 2 in Record Business, with Lennon at the top. JONA LEWIE (formerly Terry Dactyl And The Dinosaurs) sold just as many in that period. THE POLICE and ABBA were neck and neck, all week. ANT MUSIC kept us going as ADAM ANT really took off in Jan 1981. The STRAY CATS bursted on the scene, bring Rock-a-billy in, along with MATCHBOX (also in with their medley). BOOMTOWN RATS were telling us more on Ireland. STATUS QUO, and The SPECIALS both gave us double A sides. The QUO were brilliant in Brighton last Friday, but the sound system at the new Wembley is atrocious. CHAS N`DAVE had more Rabbit than Sainsburys...I have never seen rabbit on sell, in Sainsburys! QUEEN gave us the single of FLASH. SPANDAU BALLET had their first hit. NEIL DIAMOND was on the rocks! The BARRON KNIGHTS had the ultimate Christmas hit..."Old Mrs Girt. sher lifted her skirt, and did the Hokey Cokey...Mr Smith got stuck in the lift, it wouldn`t go up or down you know! The medley took, takes on Another Brick In The Wall, and Day Trip To Bangor. Including, Santa getting drunk and driving in to the wall! EDDY GRANT and BLONDIE went down the chart. BARRY MANILOW hung about the chart forever with "LONELY TOGETHER", and never made the top 20. The SPECIALS gave us a 2-Tone Xmas, from Coventry. KOOL AND THE GANG sang Kylie!!! ELO were still releasing songs from the year`s worse film "Xanadu". New Wave via GARY NUMAN (no doubt eating toast). AC/DC gave us the hard stuff, and a great concert in 1980. MAC DAVIES was back after 8 years. DENNIS WATERMAN teamed up, with GERARD KENNY in the writing of the theme to "MINDER". KATE BUSH sung about St Nicholas down the chimney! SHOWADDYWADDY thought it was 1961. DIANA ROSS came out, unleashing a kind of "gay" anthem. Got a feeling ROD STEWART didn`t make the Radio One Top 40 with "My Girl", this was a re-make and made it`s Independant Radio peak. BAD MANNERS were going to kill Lorraine, when they found her...reminding me of LORRAINE CHASE in LWT`s "The Other`Arf on tv in 1980. After watching that one, I felt the same! But wasn`t the lovely Lorraine, great in Blankety Blank...at it`s best with Mr Terry Wogan. The Nolans kept going...as did the family! MIKE BERRY was with the OUTLAWS in the 60s. In 1980 he appeared in WORZEL GUMMIDGE. Then also took over from Trevor Bannister in "Are You Being Served?" Where he played the ever micky taking Mr Spooner...although Trevor Bannister`s Mr Lucas, had been so much better. (Vintage Charts compiled by Record Business Magazine for Independant Radio 1980). Stick around for the latest singles soon....
December 19, 200816 yr Author Thanks Dave Where is Enya in the albums please? :) Enya is stuck at a combined 36.
December 19, 200816 yr 05 04 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA  I can't believe St Winifred's School Choir beat John Lennon, what a travesty!
December 19, 200816 yr Thanks Dave I love ABBA, but Super Trouper is one of my least favourite of their songs. The album's fabulous though
December 19, 200816 yr "Flashback time, and a exciting one this week in 1980...That brought us the Chapman shooting of John Lennon, with the BBC paying tribute on Monday 8th Dec 1980 with a showing of one of the films." Is this definitely correct? I'm sure the news didn't break over here until the morning of 9th December?
December 19, 200816 yr Didn't realise Jona Lewie made #1 the previous week, I wish he did on the official chart. Excellent retro chart, huge fall for Blondie I hope you didn't get any rabbit from Sainsbury's Dave  ;)
December 19, 200816 yr Author Here is the finish...The top selling Singles at Christmas 2008! Starting Physically, with the top selling singles in the physical form: w/k ending 26th Dec 2008 01 NE ALEXANDRA 02 01 BANDAGED 03 NE GERALDINE 04 02 HERO - X FACTOR FINALISTS 05 03 BOYZONE 06 05 ALESHA DIXON 07 NE WOMBATS 08 04 STATUS QUO 09 13 IF I WERE A BOY - BEYONCE 10 06 BRITNEY 11 NE HOT LEG 12 08 GEORGE SAMPSON 13 07 TAKE THAT 14 09 OASIS 15 NE SCOOTER 16 11 T.I. 17 NE I MISS YOU - BASSHUNTER 18 14 GIRLS ALOUD 19 12 LEONA - FORGIVE ME 20 NE JINGLE BELLS - BASSHUNTER 21 RE GERALDINE - WINNERS SONG 22 NE KAISER CHIEFS 23 10 KINGS OF LEON - USE SOMEBODY 24 NE SNOW PATROL 25 24 POGUES 26 18 BOB THE BUILDER 27 RE LEON JACKSON - DON`T CALL THIS LOVE 28 22 JAMES MORRISON 29 16 MCFLY 30 15 SAME DIFFERENCE 31 20 N-DUBZ 32 19 AKON 33 17 HOT N`COLD - KATY PERRY 34 23 PUSSYCAT DOLLS 35 21 WILL YOUNG 36 26 GURU JOSH 37 28 PINK 38 25 MADONNA 39 27 DUFFY 40 NE OUTSIDERS LADYHAWKE at 41, JASON MRAZ 42...both selling just over 300 copies! If you were one of those that picked up "Rule The World" this week...What took you so long?! Shakin`Stevens will probably swap places with Kanye West shortly...Shame! Chris Rea is likely to increase, and get back in the top 50. This will knock out Katy Perry`s "I Kissed A Girl", at long last! = Position on Chart Show tv. Amazingly the first time since Christmas 1953, see`s two versions of the same song side by side in the chart. ANSWER ME was in the same spots for both DAVID WHITFIELD and FRANKIE LAINE in 53. Of course this did happen after 1953, but this is just the 2nd time at Christmas. I could argue about "Unchained Melody" in 1955, as Jimmy Young was out sold by Al Hibbler, but apparently NME try to tell us different! Cherry Pink And Apple Blosson White did the feat in 1955 for Eddie Calvert/Perez Prado. Singing The Blues is also open to question in 1957, as I know for a fact that Tommy Steele`s version did not ever overtake Guy Mitchell`s in weekly sales. Infact Tommy struggled for a number 2 position. Alexandra sells 4 times as many as the late Jeff Buckley. Leonard Cohen get`s his first uk single! A annoyance to the ears, as ever! Outside our top 60: Westlife are in the top 70 "I`m Already There". Rick Astley scrapes the top 75, and Elton, Neil, and the Killers hit the 75 too. Kaiser Chiefs newie get`s beaten by their last hit, as it reclimbs the top 70. Note: This is not the Official Chart. It is based on Chart Show tv`s Video Singles Chart (Saturdays 9.00-10.30am, Sky 365), with added sales to make it the most up to date, and fastest chart in Britain. December 19, 200816 yr Author Thanks Dave I love ABBA, but Super Trouper is one of my least favourite of their songs. The album's fabulous though  Oh yeah...and Tom, during 1980 while working with the BBC, we interviewed Benny, and Bjorn. They told us the correct words from Super Trouper...The line goes "When I called you last night from where?" People thought it was Tesco`s, Glasgow etc. But this proved incorrect. It was infact a town in Sweden...Now if I only I could remember the name! Help! Maybe Colin can help?
December 19, 200816 yr Author "Flashback time, and a exciting one this week in 1980...That brought us the Chapman shooting of John Lennon, with the BBC paying tribute on Monday 8th Dec 1980 with a showing of one of the films." Is this definitely correct? I'm sure the news didn't break over here until the morning of 9th December? I believe you are right! I was doing a night time production thing then. I came home in the early hours, and possibly it was on the Tuesday. I am struggling remembering the tribute film on BBC. I think it was "Help", but it may have been "A Hard Days Night"...well it was for me, that evening.

That's still the official lyrics I'm sure. Thanks for the singles Dave
December 19, 200816 yr LADYHAWKE at 41, JASON MRAZ 42...both selling just over 300 copies Thats actually not that bad, compared to The Ting Tings who made #1 in the spring with less than 5000 copies. Hot Leg at #11? Yay for all of the songs in the pre-order chart- all are great except for Sugababes i guess. But espescially for Keane and Franz Ferdinand
December 19, 200816 yr Author Didn't realise Jona Lewie made #1 the previous week, I wish he did on the official chart. Excellent retro chart, huge fall for Blondie I hope you didn't get any rabbit from Sainsbury's Dave  ;) Isn`t it strange though. I don`t think they ever sold it in Sainsburys. I certainly wouldn`t eat rabbit, these days. Rather old fashioned! Bang Bang Bang Goes The Farmers Gun, ay?! And that featured on Chas n`Dave`s 1981 hit "Stars Over 45". :o
December 19, 200816 yr Author Hot Leg at #11? Strange it is, that "I`ve Met Jesus" is only 86 on the combined physical/download chart. This reminds me of a joke...This morning I found out that Jesus, lives in my street. While walking down the road, I heard a woman in a house shout "Jesus, are you still in that bathroom!!!!"
You are correct he was shot dead 23:00 Hrs New York time, so the UK awoke to the horrible news on the morning of the 9th December.

While walking down the road, I heard a woman in a house shout "Jesus, are you still in that bathroom!!!!" That made me chuckle
December 19, 200816 yr Who's Colin:? I really thought (and still think) it's Glasgow! That's still the official lyrics I'm sure. Thanks for the singles Dave Yes it's Glasgow. http://www.lyricsfreak.com/a/abba/super+tr...r_20002993.html
December 19, 200816 yr Thought as much, thanks Chris. I can't think of a Swedish town that rhymes with Glasgow. Maybe Malmo in a terrible accent? :) Just realised Geraldine at number 4 :o  And the difference between last Friday and Sunday for Basshunter - Jingle Bells surely means he will be top 30 if not top 20 by the weekend right? :o
