December 24, 200816 yr and everyone will shop there for non commercial and old music They won't mate, have you seen the cost of HMV's non chart CD's ? £15+ No one is going to be insane enough to pay those prices and rightly so especially in these tough economic times and when you can get the same item for half that at Play.com, that is why their business model is failing because they charge rip off prices for non chart stuff
December 24, 200816 yr This is terrible news, but it was always going to happen given who owns and supplies them.... :(
December 24, 200816 yr I love Zavvi  All these jobs going, how is the country supposed to recover from this if no one's earning?
December 24, 200816 yr Can't say I am suprised but the music industry is going to be in a poor way going into 2009 - No Woolies and now possibly no Zavvi which will leave many towns without a music store apart from a Top 40 offering in the Supermarkets
December 24, 200816 yr I would happily see the back of HMV, outside of chart cd's they charge like £15-16 for a CD :manson: Totally agree - Their prices are shocking, I went in their last week and they had the latest Take That, Britney, Miley etc, albums for £13+ With the loss of their main competition in the high street (Woolies and Zavvi) they will now be able to charge anything they like.

I go in there regularly and it's incredibly rare you see a one disc cd for above £12 now. I've bought so many CDs from HMV this year, about 10-20% of them could be described as commercial or chart and I've only paid over £10 once, it was £10.99 for the second Los Campesinos! album which came in a cardboard box with a booket, dvd, poster and badges!

Ironically I got that for £8.99 in Zavvi  But tis true over £10 is rare. M83 is £14 in my HMV though. Fack paying that tbf. They were selling HON,Y for £6 and the new Gang Gang Dance album for £8. Ahhh HMV, one of the last retreats to purchase alternative music for cheap.

My Zavvi is useless really, it's effectively Woolworths but with a bit more choice. I managed to find 'Ladyhawke' in there (but still £2 more expensive than HMV) which is about the most obscure thing I've found that I've been looking for which is beyond awful. This year in HMV I've bought off the top of my head albums by The National, The Duke Spirit, Los Campesinos (x2), Laura Marling, Vampire Weekend (before A-Punk had made the top 75), Les Savy Fav, Battles, The Long Blondes (x2), The Shortwave Set, Friendly Fires, Jenny Lewis, Jim Noir, James, The Hold Steady (x3), Monkey Swallows The Universe, Miracle Fortress and Digitalism. Only one cost me more than a tenner, that's pretty good really considering they're acts that 80%+ of BJ won't ever have heard of...
December 24, 200816 yr ohh well, i had never been in a zavvi shop before. so wont be missing it one bit.

The only supermarket that keeps the chart pretty much up to date in my town is Tesco and even they don't have the majority of albums I'd like, as they often don't chart very high :(

Yeah its been a while tbf But I remember a couple of years back I was looking at replacing a couple of my Pink Floyd cd's as they were getting a bit scratched and I went into HMV in Oxford St and was shocked by the cost I literally get everything off Play.com these days really
December 24, 200816 yr Really bad news, was quite surprised about this. I think hmv will be next, i was reading somewhere other day that an insider said a high street retailer with 323 (or something like that) shops was highly likely to go under in the new year. We have known they have been in trouble for a bit though and i dont see why zavvi failed and hmv can. Does this also mean hmv is only shop to buy singles now?
December 24, 200816 yr Looks like JJB, Jessops and Wilkinson's could be next.. :o TBH, I've never heard of Whittard and The Officer's Club. Zavvi, I've bought some stuff online before.
December 24, 200816 yr The net is the way forward I predict that by 2018 the High St will not hold physical stocks of items for sale and will instead be showrooms of internet retailers where you go in to the shop and order the goods off the website of the retailer at web as opposed to High St prices and they ship the ordered goods, less staffing costs, shoplifting which is the bane of retailers eliminated etc etc Exceptions being food. clothing and confectionery stores Edited December 24, 200816 yr by B.A Baracus

Exactly. I have not paid over £9.99 for a single CD album in there this year. If HMV goes to wall then I'll have to buy music digitally online via iTunes; 7Digital, etc. As my experience of buying CDs from online (back in 2006/7 from Play.com; CDWow & Amazon has not been good. Receiving items late; not at all; Broken cases; etc then I'll be damned if I'm shopping with them even if they undercut the likes of HMV & Zavvi because the hassle I've had e-mailing or phoning them to get things sorted sure as hell is not worth it.
December 24, 200816 yr Looks like JJB, Jessops and Wilkinson's could be next.. :o I heard Wilkinson's are cutting staff down, and they just opened a new store in Gillingham, 2 to 3 months ago, that was a waste of time, Medway unemployment will increase with Woolies and Wilko out of action, we have a Wilko in every city of the Medway towns, Gillingham, Chatham, Sittingbourne and Rainham. :o

Aah you have had a lot of bad luck :o In the last 2 years I have spent near on £2500 at eBuyer.com (laptop and lots of computer components and peripherals) £800 in the last year at Play.com (CD's and DVD's) Around £1200 on eBay in the last 2 years (computer software, car equipment etc) Bought several items at Amazon (books, HDD recorder, headphones) And in ALL that time I have had to do 1 return of anything and that was a faulty RAM stick off eBuyer which just required an RMA and it was refunded to me 2 days later
