The big albums of 2009

Planet Sound's tips for 2009

teletext.co.uk

By John Earls - Last year, we were spoilt for major albums. Oasis, Keane, Kaiser Chiefs, The Killers... all came out within weeks of each other.

Yet this year, there are plenty of other big name acts set to return.

Even January, usually a dead month for major albums, sees Antony And The Johnsons finally follow their Mercury-winning debut, while Franz Ferdinand are back after four years with Tonight.

Next month has Lily Allen and Morrissey back, with the pressure on Allen to remind people what her day job is.

It's Not Me, It's You is strong enough to get her old fans back onside, with her debut's homemade charm toughened up with confident dance-pop and a new steel in Allen's distinct vocals.

Years Of Refusal is a return to form for Morrissey after the ho-hum Ringleader Of The Tormentors.

There won't be a bigger album all year than U2, back on March 2 with No Line On The Horizon.

Early word suggests a mix of trademark stadium ballads with the raucous rock that made Vertigo so entertaining, though the involvement of rent-a-rap hack WillIAm is a grim warning sign.

March also sees The Prodigy return, with their most brutally noisy and exciting album since Jilted Generation.

There's no sign of any music on 2009's other big albums just yet.

Kasabian told PS last summer that their third record will be a concept album about Broken Britain. Around the same time in April, Depeche Mode are back, apparently with Dave Gahan and Martin Gore co-writing for the first time.

Also in spring, Pet Shop Boys release Yes, their first album to be made with Girls Aloud producers Xenomania.

Eminem is due to come out of retirement this year, with Dr Dre again in charge of production for his first album since Encore in 2004.

There's no word on the music itself, but Eminem has seemed far more chilled in his outlook than last time out.

With Guns N' Roses actually releasing last year, 2009's "Will it really happen?" return looks to be the rumour of a new My Bloody Valentine album.

Other notable releases include Green Day - made with Nevermind producer Butch Vig of Garbage - and Muse, making noises of their most complex song yet, a three-part symphony.

Both are rumoured to be coming out in September, as is The Strokes' first album in four years.

Then there's Beastie Boys, The Cribs' first with Johnny Marr, The National, Jarvis Cocker, maybe Blur...

Which Indie/Rock/Alternative albums are you most looking forward to in 2009?

The Strokes

Eminem

Kasabian

The Prodigy

U2

Green Day

The Cribs/ Johnny Marr

Lily Allen

Looks like it'll be a great year for album releases. Really can't wait for Muse, Eminem or the Strokes

For me it's Arctic Monkeys at the moment. But i'm also looking forward to The Strokes, U2 and Green Day's new efforts...

I'm sure I read Muse weren't releasing their album until 2010 too?

Muse ?! :o That would be brilliant!

From the news article TIP posted;

U2

The Prodigy

Green Day

Eminem

And the Arctic Monkeys.

Only really have eyes (ears?) for the Franz Ferdinand album at the moment. My Bloody Valentine would be very nice though but I'll believe it when I see (hear?) it.

Beastie Boys? Could be interesting - I loved the instrumental one from 2007 but 'To the 5 Boroughs' was forgettable, not as crap as 'Hello Nasty', but forgettable. Really, it's been 15 years since their last really good one and 17 since their last great.

Beasties are remastering 'Pauls Boutique' right now :D and 'To The 5 Boroughs' had it's tracks to be fair, and 'Hello Nasty' was amazing so dont even go there ('Three MC's...' is one of their best tracks). So yeah im looking forward to a new Beastie Boys album

Looking forward to Franz Ferdinand, Kasabien and Muse. Not much else too exciting -_-
Muse, Prodigy, Lily Allen ()

Surely the two biggest selling albums of 2009 will be U2 and Robbie Williams.

For enjoyment however, personally I'm looking forward to the Arctic Monkeys (I still prefer their second album to the first one ... so I may like the third even more) and I am more than a little curious about The Prodigy.
