March 7, 200916 yr it basically explains the meaning of something, so say 「立入り禁止」は入るなという意味です ["tachiirikinshi" means don't enter] - it's basically defining the meaning of something. If you want to ask the meaning of something, it's _______はどういう意味ですか。 [/grammar lesson]
March 7, 200916 yr Arigato gozaimasu! Boku ha nihongo sukoshi o wakarimasu... but my kanji sucks
March 7, 200916 yr そうですか。楽しいですか。私の日本語があまり上手じゃありませんが、9月からだけ 勉強しています。ああ、漢字が大変ですねえ。私も漢字が難しいと思います。 手伝うとき、聞いてもいいですよ!:D - Do you understand that? I don't get to speak to people in Japanese usually  Do you self study or take it as a course? Edited March 7, 200916 yr by Kiseki
March 8, 200916 yr Uh yeah, had to romanize everything past "sou desu ka", but I got it  Self study, but I'm planning to do evening courses before I go back there (hopefully next year or 2011).
March 8, 200916 yr LOL i'm glad you understand it, even if it is romanized  I actually can't read the romanized words, our course doesn't actually use any, so I've just learned to live without it. I actually find it easier with kana/kanji. Oh wow, that's cool! when did you go? I've never been, but i'm going in 2010 for a year, as long as I pass my first two years  It's REALLY hard to study at University because it's so intense, but from starting at beginner level in September, i'm at A-level equivalent standard, which is scarily quick :o edit; to relate this vaguely back to the subject of the thread, Utada was the first Japanese artist I listened to in 2004. I heard "First Love" - and i've never looked back ^_^ Edited March 8, 200916 yr by Kiseki

I heard "First Love" - and i've never looked back ^_^ Are you from Korea? I guess it's easier to get your head around the idea of kanji and kana if you are used to writing in hangul (I think it's called that?) I went to Tokyo two years ago, only for two weeks, but it was truly amazing! The coolest thing was, the people weren't reserved and guarded like they say, but actually really fun and friendly! I went with my partner, and we did all the tourist stuff, but I also spent a lot of time in CD shops, buying (mostly used) J-pop and Eurobeat CDs :heehee: The first Japanese act I ever listened to was Pizzicato Five (who I'm thinking of entering in BJSC, if I can find the right song!) but I got into Utada around the time of Exodus. I know it's not highly rated, but I liked that album a lot , and it re-awoke my interest in J-pop..
March 8, 200916 yr I think Exodus 04 is literally the only good song on Exodus. :( She got SO carried away with doing silly novelty songs that she forgot to add the melodies. It was like one giant clash of production and bad lyrics. Thankfully though Heart Station is properly fantastic. :P
March 8, 200916 yr I always find it funny how you can tell when people got into a certain artist by their favourite album. I'd rate HS by far her weakest album. Sure it's pleasant, but comparing it to an album like "Deep River" is just impossible, that album IMO is amazing. I can still listen to it now and not get bored. "Exodus" is when I began to lose interest in her. That said, I'd rank "Kremlin Dusk" and one of her greatest songs, up there with "光" and "FINAL DISTANCE." She just doesn't put any effort into anything anymore. No I'm not from Korea  Yeah Japanese people are very friendly to foreigners in the city [in the countryside, not so..] I've never really been into Pizzicato, though if you like them you should try out Capsule and Clazziquai [i'd rate both as amazing, especially Capsule! ] Edited March 8, 200916 yr by Kiseki
March 8, 200916 yr I don't know Clazziquai but Capsule I know, mostly for their work with the AMAZING Perfume  Actually I have thought of the best Japanese act to enter in the contest, but I won't give it away yet... :)
March 9, 200916 yr Clips of Apple & Cinnamon and Taking My Money Back: elo_RwLdhKo FYI leaked in full too. It's pretty damn good (in a Stargate sort of way).
March 13, 200916 yr The album leaked. It has NOT disappointed! 08.6 On & On | Urban-disco on which she yodels. The perfect opener. 08.5 FYI | Kudos to her for getting 'flossin' into the lyrics; perhaps that was a dare. Nice and melancholic. 08.7 Apple & Cinnamon | Quirky-ish despite fitting the pop-ballad template. The lyrics are pretty amusing ('simple and innocent'/'apple and cinnamon') and the synths are lovely. 08.2 Takin' My Money Back | I love the 'dirty' part of the beat, but the chorus isn't really distinctive from the rest of the song, which lets it down slightly. 09.2 This One | I prefer when she sings in a lower register as she does here; her vocals are more attention-grabbing. This is definitely the highlight amongst the ballads. It's very heartfelt to these ears. 08.3 Automatic pt.II | There's not really a melody to this one but it's the first song that isn't in any way a ballad, more of a cool, grinding midtempo, and it's really welcome because it breaks up the ballady-types. Edgy too. 09.2 Dirty Desire | Lyrically this is the absolute tits; "in my fantasies I love you long time", "working 9 to 5 I'm thinking 6 and 9" - amazing! Fabulous how the verses are dirty, almost rapped, the bridge is sung, and then the chorus is really melodic. A definite early favourite; love the hip-hop outro! 8.1 Poppin' | Sounds like the themetune to some strange female-driven cop film. "They're all mine, the stars in the sky" is a lovely spoken lyric. This is like 'Spanish Lesson' from Hard Candy in that everybody will probably hate it but it's quite a guilty pleasure... 09.0 Come Back To Me | I think this is immense despite being a little generic. Just a nice, warming song, and a great lead single. 8.2 Me Muero | "All my love has gone away, gone to Istanbul" is a ridiculous and yet brilliant lyric. There's definitely a distinct Turkish sound here. Really like that it's slightly disjointed musically. This Is The One > 8.6/10 I hope everybody gives it a chance even if you thought CBTM was too generic, because her personality is to be found on a fair few of the songs, her vocals are mesmerising at times and it's not like any of her past albums (certainly nothing like Exodus, gladly). With any luck she'll get the chance to release 'Dirty Desire' second.
March 13, 200916 yr I'm glad I had no expectations for this album, because it's turned out exactly as I thought it would. My God Utada, where did it go wrong? It's dreadful, easily as bad as when she was "Cubic U." The only good track is "This One" [which is actually very good.] as somebody said on JPM ~ "give me her made in five minutes on her home computer music over this any day." Edited March 13, 200916 yr by Kiseki
March 14, 200916 yr Well... what a pleasing album this is? I haven't heard an album of hers yet and I was pleasantly surprised by this. 'Dirty Desire' is early favourite along with the lead 'Come Back to Me', andd 'This One' & 'Takin My Money Back'. So i might have to see what her first album is like!
March 14, 200916 yr After One Listen 08.0 On & On 09.0 FYI 08.5 Apple & Cinnamon 09.0 Takin' My Money Back 09.0 This One 08.0 Automatic pt.II 08.2 Dirty Desire 09.5 Poppin' 10.0 Come Back To Me 09.0 Me Muero pure amazingness :D
March 14, 200916 yr Is Me Muero in Spanish? I just got this, but didn't get to listening it to it yet... i'm in pre-Melodifestivalen schlager mode...
March 14, 200916 yr Me Muero isn't in Spanish, no, she just sings those two words in the chorus. Updated rate: 09.5 Dirty Desire 09.3 This One (Crying Like A Child) 09.1 Come Back To Me 08.9 On & On 08.8 Apple & Cinnamon 08.8 FYI 08.5 Poppin' 08.4 Takin' My Money Back 08.1 Automatic pt.II 08.0 Me Muero Super-solid. My current MOMENT of the album is during the spoken breakdown of Poppin': Yeah, you heard me right They're all mine, the stars in the sky But I can share if you like Would you like that? Fabulous.
