Yep covers are allowed. Robbie William's cover of She's The One won and I think Take That's cover of HDIYL won too. There must be more though.

Ronson and Winehouse's Valerie was nominated last year and made the top 5.

Oh cant wait till the 20th! Spice girls for best tour or live act or best comeback!!!! Need something!
The nominations will be shown on ITV2 at 8pm on the 20th. The actual BRITS ceremony in February is apparently being presented by Mat Horne, James Corden and Kylie Minogue.
Run should deserve to be in the list..but i dont know...its a cover..

Covers are allowed. :)

I'm hesitant to make a prediction on the longlist because I think it will include other songs that were in positions 41-75 of the Top 40 of 2008, possibly:

- The Script --- (is it UK & Ireland that counts?)

- Take That

- Alesha Dixon

- David Jordan

- M.I.A *

However, the longlist will DEFINITELY include:

- Adele *

- Duffy

- Coldplay *

- Girls Aloud

- The Tings Tings

- Estelle * --- (depends on rules regarding featured artists)

* songs nominated for grammies

I thought of adding MIA - maybe at the expense of Wiley? Can't see them not including Take That.

The Script are Irish so will be ineligible.

I'll be surprised if TT don't win as they've won the 2007 and 2008 ones. Leona might be nominated but won't win due to the BRIT panel probably fixing it as they don't like reality show contestants (just look what happened to Leona last year). I would like Alesha Dixon to win at least one award. I would be glad if Alexandra wins but thats very unlikely.
I think either GA - The Promise, Duffy - Mercy or Coldplay - Viva la Vida deserve to win, possibly Estelle aswell.

I actually doubt Take That will be nominated but if they are ... I honestly don't think they'll make the final five on the night. There are a lot of Take That fans that don't even like it ... I don't hate it ... but while I voted for Shine last year and Patience the year before ... I wouldn't bother picking the phone up for Greatest Day. If Take That choose their second single wisely (cough, cough, Up All Night, hint, hint, for God's sake not Julie, cough, cough) then they may come back with a Best Single Brit in 2010!

2009 is the year that Take That come away from the Brits with nothing and I'll bet £100 on that now (well as soon as the nominations are announced - I'm off to Tote to place that very bet).

I think that if Leona's version of Run is nominated, it will win.

I do too! But I'd really like Coldplay's VLV to win. I think Leona or Coldplay would be the correct winners ... I can't see anyone having any complaints about either of those choices.

I'd love Duffy to win but to be fair, by the looks of things it will be a good list of nominees anyway!

I see where you are coming from but i still stand by my point about Leona. You have to admit it was way out of order for her not to win at least one BRIT last year. Reality TV contestants have a history of getting snubbed by the BRITS. GA are rarely nominated, Same with Will Young & XF winners.

Although i still watch the BRITs, ive lost all my faith in them when Kylie won Best International Female over Rihanna last year

i thought Ting Tings are americans??

Certainly not!

Also, whoever asked about Take That's Rule the World - it was out in 2007 so I don't think so, unless the nominations run from very late 2007 to very late 2008?

As I understand it the Best British Single nominations include a combination of the best selling UK singles and those with the most airplay (charity singles are excluded).

So the nominations will probably include Alexandra Burke, Duffy 'Mercy', Estelle 'American Boy' Leona 'Run', Coldplay 'Viva La Vida' Girls Aloud 'The Promise' The Ting Tings - those being the biggest selling UK singles (and all received lots of airplay). After that it gets a bit more difficult to predict as it depends on how they work out the sales to airplay ratio. Possibly Dizee Rascal and Adele as well? I'm sure there is a certain amount of *cough* flexibility as well to exclude less favoured artists and include those favoured by the Brits panel.

I think the panel did snub Leona last year in the industry nominated awards, pardon me but I can't remember exactly what she was nominated for now but I do remember she seemed to be unfairly snubbed particularly for Best Female - Kate Nash was it? That's just the snobbery of the Brits panel who wouldn't dare vote for a reality show winner, unfortunately same reason why Will Young has never won Best British Male.

But in categories nominated by the public she definitely stands a chance, I think if 'Run' is nominated if her fans get behind her she will win. It doesn't take much to pick up the phone. Last year she was up against Take That and may well be again but I think 'Run' has even more widespread appeal to get votes from outside her fanbase, ie even Snow Patrol fans who love the cover.

GA, Will Young, X Factor winners are usually snubbed for winning industry awards but it is possible for them to win public awards. Will Young HAS won Brits - Best British Single for 'Your Game' and 'Best British Breakthrough Act' Weren't Girls Aloud nominated for Best British Group alongside Coldplay and co last year or was I dreaming?

Yes it was Kate Nash. One things for sure, and that is that the BRIT panel don't vote on success. If they did then Leona would of won all four of her categories last year and, as i said, Rihanna not winning BIFA was a disgrace when she had a number one album and a number one single which stayed at the top for 10 weeks. Instead, Kylie won when her album and single barely crept into the Top 5.

I agree Leona should have got something last year ... but to say she should have got all four is a little over the top! The Brits panel are a bit snobbish (not just towards Leona) and it was obvious they'd go for the Arctic Monkeys FWN as best album - they were never, ever going to give it to a pop act ... and that panel will never give anything to Take That anyway (I honestly don't know why they bother nominating them as they're just paying lip-service to say they've done their bit). In hindsight though .... between FWN and Spirit .... I'd much rather have the Arctics album ... its so good I did actually buy it! Even though Alex Turner is a dweeb! FWN has about six great song on it. At the time, Spirit only had the one good song (the single) the rest was pretty much filler (BIT was OK too). I should imagine now having Run on it makes the rest of the album look even more run-of-the-mill.

Having said that, best UK female, Kate Nash - what were they thinking? Probably some of the doddery old gets on the panel saw Kate and the last two letters of the surname and thought it was Kate Bush!
