Frankie Sandford saves her pop career with Saturdays

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Singer Frankie Sandford, 19, started her career in kiddie pop troupe S Club Juniors, which morphed into S Club 8. Alas, she was on the pop scrapheap by her mid teens. She has resurfaced in new girl group The Saturdays. Their new single, Issues, is out now.

What was the highlight of 2008 for you?

The tour and our singles charting in the top ten. Pop isn’t that big at the moment, so people didn’t expect us to do well – especially with Girls Aloud, Sugababes and Pussycat Dolls out there already. We’d have been a bit bummed out if the singles hadn’t made it.

Is it difficult to launch a pop career when people haven’t seen you crying about a dead hamster on The X Factor for three months?

We had to work our way up from the bottom. It makes it more rewarding. You have weeks to build your fan base on a reality show; we were just thrown out there.

What’s the worst gig you’ve ever done?

We did the Clothes Show Live at the NEC, which was great but we had to do seven shows a day for five days. It was hard work. We were going insane by the end of the week.

Why did you have to re-record the lyrics on the single?

The original lyrics were ‘Slap you or kiss you’ but people at radio stations thought we were singing ‘Stab you or kiss you’, so we had to change it, just in case of any confusion that The Saturdays were condoning stabbings. We changed it to ‘leave’.

What did you do after S Club 8 split?

I had a solo deal for a year but didn’t know what music I wanted to record. I needed time to grow up a bit and hang around with my friends. I had singing lessons and learned the guitar and piano. I thought about doing a music management course at university, as I have a good idea how the business works, but I knew I’d just want to leave and do pop.

Did you get a proper job?

I worked in a bar and an All Saints concession in House of Fraser. I wasn’t there long enough to get the staff discount. I wouldn’t work in a shop again: it’s really boring and people are rude.

Were you a stage school brat?

No, I went to one on a Sunday but it wasn’t proper stage school. My parents were shocked when I got into S Club Juniors. They thought I wanted to do theatre. I wasn’t a brat.

Does being a child performer make you go mad?

No, I like to think I’m quite sane. I needed time away from it all when it finished and needed to hang out with people but it didn’t do me any harm.

You’re going out with Dougie from McFly. How do his fans treat you?

I was worried they’d give me stick for it but we’ve got a MySpace for the band and for every nasty message I get from McFly fans I get eight nice ones. I went to one of their shows and a lot of people came up to me. I was really nervous about it but everyone was nice. We don’t go out posing for the paps at clubs so I guess we’re not rubbing it in people’s faces. I’m sure that would annoy people.

Have you ever been to a psychic?

Yes. I believe in all that. She told me a lot of stuff about myself that people don’t know. If you’re feeling confused about something it just helps – even if it’s not true.

Have you ever been attacked by an animal?

A goose bit me when I was little. I was feeding it bread and it suddenly started munching on my fingers. Geese still make me uncomfortable to this day.

Have you got any New Year resolutions?

To be healthier and go to the gym. I’d like to tone up a bit. We end up eating a lot of food from service

I never realised Frankie was signed as a solo artist after S Club! Would love to unearth some of her solo recordings! :kink:

She has spoken about it in a few interviews.

 I would have liked the original lyric to stay in "Issues" Slap you or kiss you. Although Leave I guess sounds less agressive :teresa:
I hope she gets more to sing on the next album, i'm so used to her being the lead singer from sclub8 its weird seeing her have no solo verses in any of the singles.

I love Frankie, my favourite Saturday, and that interview was really good.

Love the question "Is it difficult to launch a pop career when people haven’t seen you crying about a dead hamster on The X Factor for three months?" Dead hamster

Thanks for the info B)

Interesting to see most of the girls actually have solo stuff around the net. Frankie as a person has grown on me a lot recently aswell.
