Posted January 18, 200916 yr Already 2009’s biggest new star, New York singer Lady GaGa reigns supreme at the top of the UK charts for a second week this week with her infectious debut single Just Dance. Ohio based hotly tipped rapper Kid Cudi, who like Lady GaGa reached the top ten of BBC’s Sound of 2009 list, debuts at No.2 with Day ‘N’ Nite whilst James Morrison & Nelly Furtado round off the top three with Broken Strings. Having dominated in Australia, New Zealand and mainland Europe, Just Dance finally hit the top simultaneously for Lady GaGa last week in the UK and US. The single debuted at No.3 here two weeks ago before rising to the top last week. It spends a second week at No.1 now but the rising electro-popstar was run close by this week’s highest new entry. Ohio based rapper Kid Cudi is another of 2009’s most promising acts. His debut single Day ‘N’ Nite has been making waves on the internet for a while now and the electro remix of the song by dance act Crookers gives the star a huge hit. The single, which received a simultaneous physical and digital release, shoots straight into the UK charts at No.2 this week, with the prospect of a No.1 hit not an impossible to imagine scenario in the coming weeks. It is the first huge dance hit for a few months in the UK, the last being Guru Josh Project’s top three hit Infinity 2008. The next big dance/rap crossover will arguably be Tinchy Stryder and Taio Cruz’s Take Me Back which is an almost certain top ten hit this time next week. James Morrison and Nelly Furtado slide to No.3 with Broken Strings, which climbed to a new peak of No.2 last week, whilst The Saturdays score their second consecutive top five single with the ballad Issues. Having been gradually climbing up the lower end of the charts, the song rocketed to No.6 last week and amidst increasing radio support it jumps a further two spots to No.4 this week. It is now the quintet’s most successful UK single to date, beating the No.5 peak of Up. It is quite rare for acts to improve on positions of their previous singles from the same era these days, but this week there are two in the top five, Issues and Broken Strings, a far bigger hit for James Morrison than his previous single You Make It Real. No.5 is another climber. Kevin Rudolf and Lil’ Wayne had a slow start with the urban-rock crossover anthem Let It Rock which moved 75-73-67-56-40 before gaining a wave of public support and shooting up to No.10 last week. It improves once again this week and jumps five spots to No.5 for the pair. Alexandra Burke’s former chart topper, the Christmas No.1 single Hallelujah, spends a fifth week inside the top ten but falls three places to No.6 this week. Beyoncé continues to climb with Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). The former US chart topper was the b-side to her recent No.1 single If I Were A Boy but has taken off in its own right in the last few weeks thanks to huge rotation on television music channels. The song has also belatedly been added to the Radio 1 playlist, who appear to be promoting it more as the follow up to If I Were A Boy as opposed to the b-side. It duly climbs another spot to a new peak of No.7 this week. Kings Of Leon dip three spots to No.8 with the former No.2 single Use Somebody whilst Leona Lewis slides five places to No.9 with the former chart topper Run. Rounding off the top ten, and just creeping in there to keep their record of consecutive top ten singles in tact is Girls Aloud. The Loving Kind is the second single to be taken from the No.1 album Out Of Control and was co-written by Pet Shop Boys. After a slow start, their fans were clearly out in force this week and the song surges from No.29 to No.10 to give the girls an astonishing twentieth consecutive top ten single since their debut in 2002. It is however their lowest peaking single to date, previous low peakers See The Day and Can’t Speak French going as high as No.9. The top ten this week therefore includes five American acts, four British acts and one British/Canadian collaboration. Kanye West continues to edge closer to the top ten with Heartless, the follow up to Love Lockdown, which jumps three places to No.11 this week. Circus by Britney Spears joins the top twenty for the first time this week. The follow up to Womanizer moves up seven places to No.17 this week for the superstar, which keeps up her run of consecutive UK top twenty hits, bringing her total now to twenty three. Circus is likely to go top ten in the next few weeks unlike Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know, I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll and Break The Ice, the only three Britney singles to miss the UK top ten. Ne-Yo climbs three places to No.19 with new single Mad, which has picked up on airplay this week. It is the third consecutive top twenty single from the US star’s current album, Year Of The Gentleman. Former Mis-Teeq MC and Strictly Come Dancing winner Alesha Dixon looks increasingly likely to score another top ten hit with Breathe Slow. The second single from the singer’s current album, The Alesha Show, climbs an impressive sixteen places to No.23 this week overtaking former single, The Boy Does Nothing, which slides five spots to No.25. Pink’s Sober also makes upwards progress. The follow up to the huge No.1 single So What, Sober climbs eleven places to No.26 and should go top twenty next week with the physical due out on Monday. US singer/songwriter Jason Mraz leaps six places to No.28 with the worldwide smash hit I’m Yours ahead of the next new entry at No.30. Lady GaGa’s already confirmed second single Poker Face is due out at the end of March and has already topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Norway and Canada. With some buzz already surrounding the release, it has been a big success on iTunes this week as a cherry picked track from her debut album The Fame, out this week, and duly enters at No.30 this week. This could well give the American singer a second UK No.1 in due course, unless of course its sales at its peak are heavily diluted by its premature chart entry. Hotly tipped London alternative rock act White Lies finished second in BBC’s Sound of 2009 poll and reach the top forty for the first time this week with their new single, To Lose My Life. Considering the hype surrounding them, it is a surprise that this has entered as low as No.35 on the week of its physical release, and it looks unlikely to go any higher. The trio’s debut album, also called To Lose My Life, is out next week though and is tipped to top the UK charts in seven days time, the album charts clearly being the main arena for upcoming rock and indie acts these days who are increasingly struggling to reach the upper echelons of the singles chart. Two other singles join the top forty this week. American Idol 2007 winner Jordin Sparks scores her third consecutive top forty hit with One Step At A Time. The follow up to the huge No.3 hit No Air and the and Tattoo, which eventually peaked at No.24, One Step At A Time joins the top forty at No.38 this week. Finally, entering at No.39 is a song that is hotly tipped to be a top ten hit in the coming weeks. British rapper Tinchy Stryder and producer/singer Taio Cruz have teamed up on Take Me Back, a dance/rap crossover song, which goes into the top forty purely thanks to downloads of remixes of the track, with the radio edit and physical single not available until the chart sales cut off for this week. Bearing this in mind, the song should become a much bigger hit in seven days time. It marks Tinchy Stryder’s first appearance inside the UK top forty, previous single Stryderman only managing a No.73 peak last August. Taio Cruz was of course one of the success stories of last year scoring top twenty hits with Come On Girl, I Can Be and She’s Like A Star. With a price point of £3.95 on iTunes and £6 in HMV this week, it was almost inevitable that Irish trio The Script would have a chart boost this week. Indeed, they jump from No.6 back to No.1 with their eponymous debut album which hit the top of the UK charts for the first time last summer. Kings Of Leon dip to No.2 with Only By The Night whilst the highest new entry this week is at No.3. Lady GaGa’s The Fame makes an instant impression on UK audiences this week after just one single and looks almost certain to be one of the year’s long stayers as it is packed full of potential hit singles. James Morrison climbs three places to No.4 with the resurgent Songs For You, Truths For Me ahead of Duffy’s Rockferry which dips two places to No.5 this week. Take That’s former No.1 album, The Circus, slides four places to No.6 and Leona Lewis’ Sprit dips three places to No.7 this week. Beyoncé climbs back up two places to No.8 with I Am Sasha Fierce whilst The Killers slide four spots to No.9 with the former chart topper, Day & Age. Completing the top ten is The Sound Of Girls Aloud – The Greatest Hits which is back up from No.15 to No.10 this week, still benefitting from January sales. Next week’s chart could see a third week at the top for Lady GaGa’s Just Dance but Kid Cudi’s Day ‘N’ Nite could just as likely climb to the top next week. James Morrison & Nelly Furtado, The Saturdays and Kevin Rudolf should all stay too. A number of new singles are out on Monday, the one most likely to make an impact is arguably Take Me Back by Tinchy Stryder and Taio Cruz which should climb into the top ten in a week’s time. Other notable new physical releases are due from Bryn Christopher, Franz Ferdinand, who will be hoping for a successful return with new single Ulysses and Pink. The Script will be unlikely to hold onto the top of the album chart for another week as To Lose My Life, the highly anticipated debut album from alternative rock act White Lies is out on Monday and should enter at No.1 in seven days time. Kings Of Leon, James Morrison and Lady GaGa should also stay high whilst the only other new release that could have an impact this time next week is The Crying Light, the new album from former Mercury Music Prize winner Anthony & The Johnsons.
