Posted January 23, 200916 yr Hi there, standing in for Dave again, and coming to you live from Manchester - well, a hotel room therein  Seeing Grace Jones here tomorrow night - unfortunately she doesn't look like troubling any of our charts today. Anyway, here is this week`s selection of charts via top films/dvds/tv/albums/ the flashback...and of course back for the up to minute singles chart later. The top films: Compiled by Screen International for UK Box Office w/k ending 28th Jan 2009 01 02 SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE 02 NE SEVEN POUNDS 03 01 ROLE MODELS 04 NE MY BLOODY VALENTINE 05 03 BRIDE WARS 06 NE BEVERLEY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 07 04 DEFIANCE 08 NE THE WRESTLER 09 05 YES MAN 10 08 MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA As you may have heard, Slumdog Millionaire won 4 Golden Globes last week and has set the record for most sales in the second week, having made £2.6 million this week. Seven Pounds has to settle with number 2 and £1,565,949 (well, it's better than £7!). My Bloody Valentine (not the goth band) makes £1,337,613, the Disney gravy train rolls on with £1,028,983 for Beverley Hills Chihuahua, and Mickey Rourke's big Oscar hope The Wrestler makes £802,277. Guess which two of those I fancy seeing! Milk with Sean Penn and Valkyrie with Tom Cruise should make big debuts next week, fancy seeing those too, for different reasons... The Top Film dvds: Compiled by DTR, based on sales and rentals 01 NE YOU DON`T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN 02 01 PINEAPPLE EXPRESS 03 NE EDEN LAKE 04 02 DARK KNIGHT 05 03 MAMMA MIA 06 NE DISATER MOVIE 07 04 SOMER`S TOWN 08 05 WALL.E 09 06 HANCOCK 10 13 STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE I have never heard of 3, 7 or 10... nice to see Wall E and Mammia Mia sticking around though. The Top tv Related dvds: 01 NE DR WHO: THE NEXT DR 02 NE SCRUBS 2 03 01 DIARY OF ANNE FRANK 04 03 BIG BANG THEORY COMPLETE 05 02 24-REDEMPTION 06 NE PUMP IT UP 07 05 LEE EVAN`S BIG 08 10 GAVIN AND STACEY SEASON 1 09 08 FRANKIE BOYLE LIVE 10 06 MICHAEL MCINTYRE Great news for the Who fans then. No idea why the fitness videos like Pump It Up are listed here but anyway... Answer: We thoroughly believe an album to be an album, and the OCC Artist Album Chart misinterprets the "proper" Album chart. Half the time VA Compilations do just as well as the artists. Why go to all the trouble of doing two charts, when you can work it out from one? Why even iTunes list all the albums together! In the words of "Old Blue Eyes"...We do it our way! Anyway, If we did leave out the Compilations, then it would not agree with the "Vintage" Album Charts. Now let's go back to the old school. Flashback...to January 1981. Well I wasn't at school then, but Dave might have been ;) The charts compiled by MRIB for Independent Radio. The Singles back then: 01 01 IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 02 11 WOMAN - JOHN LENNON 03 02 ANT MUSIC - ADAM AND THE ANTS 04 06 IN THE AIR TONIGHT - PHIL COLLINS 05 18 RAPTURE - BLONDIE 06 12 YOUNG PARISIANS - ADAM AND THE ANTS 07 05 I AM THE BEAT - THE LOOK 08 10 DON`T STOP THE MUSIC - YARBOROUGH AND PEOPLES 09 03 DO NOTHING/MAGGIE`S FARM - SPECIALS 10 19 VIENNA - ULTRAVOX 11 08 I AIN`T GONNA STAND FOR IT - STEVIE WONDER 12 04 TOO NICE TO TALK TO - THE BEAT 13 07 FLASH - QUEEN 14 27 FADE TO GREY - VISAGE 15 16 RUNAROUND SUE - RACEY 16 20 SCARY MONSTERS - DAVID BOWIE 17 38 A LITTLE IN LOVE - CLIFF RICHARD 18 09 HAPPY CHRISTMAS WAR IS OVER - PLASTIC ONO BAND 19 31 ROMEO AND JULIET - DIRE STRAITS 20 46 RETURN OF THE LAS PALMAS SEVEN - MADNESS 21 25 IT`S MY TURN - DIANA ROSS 22 30 GANGSTERS OF THE GROOVE - HEATWAVE 23 26 LORRAINE - BAD MANNERS 24 13 STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON 25 15 RABBIT - CHAS N`DAVE 26 21 OVER THE RAINBOW-YOU BELONG TO ME - DARTS 27 14 WHO`S GONNA ROCK YOU - NOLANS 28 NE THE FREEZE - SPANDAU BALLET 29 29 BURN RUBBER ON ME - GAP BAND 30 22 LIES/DON`T DRIVE MY CAR - STATUS QUO 31 44 TWILIGHT CAFE - SUSAN FASSBENDER 32 17 STOP THE CAVALRY - JONA LEWIE 33 NE I SURRENDER - RAINBOW 34 24 EMBARRASSMENT - MADNESS 35 NE SGT ROCK IS GONNA HELP ME - XTC 36 34 IT`S HARD TO BE HUMBLE - MAC DAVIS 37 RE GIVE PEACE A CHANCE - PLASTIC ONO BAND 38 NE HANG TOGETHER - ODYSSEY 39 28 THIS WRECKAGE - GARY NUMAN 40 49 I SHOT THE SHERIFF - LIGHT OF THE WORLD 4 weeks for Imagine in 1981... and loads of Lennon, following his tragic death in Dec 1980. This prevented some great stuff like JONA LEWIE, ADAM AND THE ANTS, PHIL COLLINS, and ULTRAVOX from having the BBC number one... however JONA, PHIL, and ULTRAVOX did get the MRIB number one, on other weeks. Even JOE DOLCE couldn`t stop Midge and the gang! BLONDIE racing up the charts with one of the first (and weirdest) rap tracks... what were they on when she wrote the lyrics? One hit wonders THE LOOK slip a little with the fanatastic JAM takeoff I am The Beat... STEVIE WONDER not standing but falling at 11, with one of his best 80s tracks, later covered by Eric Clapton... VISAGE's immortal synth-pop classic Fade To Grey climbs a massive 13 spots. VISAGE's musical core were Midge Ure and Billy Currie of Ultavox - infact they were recording their first album when Midge was asked to join Ultravox. Proving that no era is safe from him, CLIFF climbs an even bigger 21 spots. We call it MADNESS twice in the top 20, with one of their instumentals jetting top 20-wards (I liked them better that way). Whereas the hugely underrated NOLANS (Tom speaking here) slip as much as VISAGE climbed. We remember MAC DAVIS on the MUPPET SHOW in 1980, and that`s why he scored in the singles chart. The late SUSAN FASSBENDER was everywhere, but did not get a follow up hit. DAVID BOWIE did better with the album, and spare a thought for the CLASH, as "HITSVILLE" just missed the MRIB Top 40, by a point! I suddenly thought of the Double A side of the SPECIALS and MAGGIES FARM...this reminded me of a tv series, on BBC2 in 1981 called "MAGGIE", all about the aguish of one Scottish Lass. BBC2 had quite an early evening following then, with the likes of TUCKERS LUCK, THE ADVENTURE GAME, HAROLD LLOYD, CHARLIE CHAPLIN, and LAUREL AND HARDY. The other series that began on BBC2 on Tuesdays was "NO LIMITS" with JENNY POWELL, and a Jonathon King invention...well not Jenny, anyway! The top albums in Jan 1981: 01 05 KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER - ADAM AND THE ANTS 02 02 VERY BEST OF - DAVID BOWIE 03 03 GREATEST HITS - DR HOOK 04 01 DOUBLE FANTASY - JOHN LENNON/YOKO ONO 05 06 IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 06 04 SUPER TROUPER - ABBA 07 07 GUILTY - BARBRA STRIESAND 08 10 MANILOW MAGIC - BARRY MANILOW 09 09 FLASH GORDON - QUEEN 10 NE MONDO BONGO - BOOMTOWN RATS 11 19 MAKIN` MOVIES - DIRE STRAITS 12 12 BARRY - BARRY MANILOW 13 15 HOTTER THAN JULY - STEVIE WONDER 14 21 SHAVED FISH - JOHN LENNON 15 08 ZENYATTA MONDATTA - THE POLICE 16 NE PARADISE THEATER - STYX 17 20 ARC OF A DIVER - STEVE WINWOOD 18 13 ABSOLUTE - MADNESS 19 11 NOT THE NINE O` CLOCK NEWS - TV CAST 20 25 THE JAZZ SINGER - NEIL DIAMOND It took ADAM AND THE ANTS two months to hit the top of the chart...because Antmania took off. K-TEL licensed a package of familiar DAVID BOWIE material from RCA. Like the singles chart, the albums were dominated by LENNON material...he had 3 albums in the top 20. BOOMTOWN RATS (and Mr Bob Geldof) gave us the highest new entry, with STYX not far behind...STYX only having that one single hit in the UK with "Babe", in Jan 1980...UFO were just outside the top 20 with "THE WILD, THE WILLING, & THE INNOCENT". Compilations were lacking in early 1981, as only "NIGHT LIFE" (another K-TEL package) featured in the top 30. Coming soon...What you've all been waiting for... The Brand New Up To The Minute Singles Chart!

January 23, 200916 yr :puke2: I cant believe "Dont mess with the Zohan" is number 1 its truly awful worst fiver I have ever spent at the cinema. Adam Sandler has lost it. Loved the wedding singer though.
January 23, 200916 yr Author The Wedding Singer is a modern comedy classic. I never saw Zohan to be honest I have eard it isn't great - I only really want to see it because of the Europop soundtrack!

January 23, 200916 yr 'Blood Bank' :cheer: It's the fist song I've really loved by him, find him over-rated. Hope it can stay top 40! :D Cheers for this, always an interesting read even if I rarely reply!
January 23, 200916 yr Thanks for the info Tom! :D Shocked to see Franz at 2 in Physicals  and Tinchy only number 8. I wish they'd swap though :( Also Bon Iver at 3 :o Sorry but... Who?? Edited January 23, 200916 yr by Hand-Jon
January 23, 200916 yr Author No probs Jon. I agree Frazn is amazingly high on physicals. 'Blood Bank' :cheer: It's the fist song I've really loved by him, find him over-rated. Hope it can stay top 40! :D Cheers for this, always an interesting read even if I rarely reply! No problem. I haven't heard it yet to be honest!
January 23, 200916 yr I guess it could be down to the fact they had the Any 3 for £3 or £5 (Can't remember which) offer ;) Edited January 23, 200916 yr by Hand-Jon
January 23, 200916 yr As Girls Aloud sold 3.4K last week on physicals, I'm estimating that Franz sold about 2.5K physicals this week.
January 23, 200916 yr Cheers Tom. :) Another static singles week only Tinchy making a noticeable splash. Great for the White Lies hope they can hold on over the weekend and poor Kanye he deserves to go top10 with Heartless. :(
January 23, 200916 yr Author Cheers Tom. :) Another static singles week only Tinchy making a noticeable splash. Great for the White Lies hope they can hold on over the weekend and poor Kanye he deserves to go top10 with Heartless. :( No probs EJ. Yes, quite static. Lily should shake things up a little next week, and it should be back to normal in a week or two. Personally I thought that Love Lockdown was a better song than Heartless, but I know that people love or hated that...
January 24, 200916 yr Poor Pink, Sober deserve more than So What :(, Good to see Womanizer still in top 30, and Circus im really afraid about Circus. :(
