As PRODIGY smash KOL, and LILY to bits...now that would be rather fun to watch! :teresa: Actually though, Prodigy sell twice as many as Kings Of Leon. Time for the weekly flashback...this week it`s March 1981. The top albums, back then: 01 02 FACE VALUE - PHIL COLLINS 02 03 KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER - ADAM AND THE ANTS 03 04 VIENNA - ULTRAVOX 04 05 DIFFICULT TO CURE - RAINBOW 05 NE STRAY CATS - STRAY CATS 06 01 DOUBLE FANTASY - JOHN LENNON 07 06 THE JAZZ SINGER - NEIL DIAMOND 08 09 DANCE CRAZE - OST 09 11 MAKIN`MOVES - DIRE STRAITS 10 10 MOVING PICTURES - RUSH 11 08 VERY BEST OF - DAVID BOWIE 12 12 VISAGE - VISAGE 13 13 MANILOW MAGIC - BARRY MANILOW 14 20 GUILTY - BARBRA STRIESAND 15 18 SOTHERN FREEEZ - FREEEZ 16 NE KILLERS - IRON MAIDEN 17 16 BARRY - BARRY MANILOW 18 15 THE MEN IN BLACK - STRANGLERS 19 20 ABSOULTELY - MADNESS 20 NE DIRK WEARS WHITE SOCKS - ADAM AND THE ANTS One solatary week at the top for PHIL COLLINS and "Face Value", a well won album on DAVID HAMILTON`s top 30 game in 1980 (which of course did later become the Music Game) over there on Radio 2. David having the most listened to afternoon show during the 77-78 period, as the programme went out on Radio 1, and 2 during those BBC cutbacks...something the disgraceful corporation should be doing more of in 2009, instead of using double acts of radio chart shows for example! :D ADAM AND THE ANTS had 2 top 20 albums that week, and about 6 singles in the top 75. ULRAVOX peaked at 2 in albums, but did have a MRIB number one single, as we find out soon. RAINBOW were doing equally well. The STRAY CATS had the highest new entrant. A crash down for the maybe over ex-posed, and late JOHN LENNON. NEIL DIAMOND live, never a good thing. As I have seen him so many times on the live circuit, and definately prefer the studio recordings. DANCE CRAZE was the latest dance based movie...well forgotten, and best forgotten! DIRE STRAITS were getting better by day, and MAKIN`MOVES climbed back into the top 10, meaning those original British Rock And Pop Awards were much more well deserved, and presented in 1981. VISAGE were getting stuck, but the singles kept coming in 1981. BARBRA STRIESAND was up and down the album chart, as was BARRY MANILOW x 2...looking out for the new one from Barry, now there is a great live singer/showman...the best Yankee male singer? Yes, most certainly! ;) RUSH were the best rock outfit around. Not forgetting early IRON MAIDEN. The SOUTHERN FREEEZ, affectionately known as a cold day in Bournemouth kept us dancing! The STRANGLERS gave us "THE MEN IN BLACK", actually all the words in that title were joint together, and there definately was no sign of ruddy WILL SMITH! MADNESS scored again at those BRP awards, and did we all flock out, and buy the soundtrack to the brilliant tv show "FAWLTY TOWERS", which relinquished just outside the album top 20... The top singles in March 1981: 01 03 SHADDUP YOU FACE - JOE DOLCE 02 01 VIENNA - ULTRAVOX 03 05 I SURRENDER - RAINBOW 04 02 WOMAN - JOHN LENNON 05 06 OLDEST SWINGER IN TOWN - FRED WEDLOCK 06 07 RETURN OF THE LAS PALMAS 7 - MADNESS 07 22 PLEASE DON`T TOUCH - MOTORHEAD 08 04 IN THE AIR TONIGHT - PHIL COLLINS 09 26 JEALOUS GUY - ROXY MUSIC 10 09 ROCK THIS TOWN - STRAY CATS 11 14 MESSAGE OF LOVE - PRETENDERS 12 21 DO THE HUCKLEBUCK - COAST TO COAST 13 08 ROMEO AND JULIET - DIRE STRAITS 14 24 SOUTHERN FREEEZ - FREEEZ 15 11 WE`LL BRING THE HOUSE DOWN - SLADE 16 13 FADE TO GREY - VISAGE 17 17 SGT ROCK IS GONNA HELP ME - XTC 18 42 KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER - ADAM AND THE ANTS 19 15 ANT MUSIC - ADAM AND THE ANTS 20 10 RAPTURE - BLONDIE 21 NE SOMETHING `BOUT YOU BABY I LIKE - STATUS QUO 22 25 THAT`S ENTERTAINMENT - THE JAM 23 19 A LITTLE IN LOVE - CLIFF RICHARD 24 12 IMAGINE - JOHN LENNON 25 38 SOMEBODY HELP ME OUT - BEGGAR AND CO. 26 23 I`M IN LOVE WITH A GERMAN FILM STAR - THE PASSIONS 27 NE IT`S A MYSTERY - TOYAH 28 35 ONCE IN A LIFETIME - TALKING HEADS 29 20 THE FREEZE - SPANDAU BALLET 30 18 YOUNG PARISIANS - ADAM AND THE ANTS 31 16 DON`T STOP THE MUSIC - YARBOROUGH AND PEOPLES 32 NE REWARD - TEARDROP EXPLODES 33 29 GANGSTERS OF THE GROOVE - HEATWAVE 34 41 HOT LOVE - KELLY MARIE 35 28 TWILIGHT CAFE - SUSAN FASSBENDER 36 27 BURN RUBBER ON ME - GAP BAND 37 34 MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION - GILLAN 38 40 I MADE IT THROUGH THE RAIN - BARRY MANILOW 39 33 ELEPHANT`S GRAVEYARD - BOOMTOWN RATS 40 32 JUST WHEN I NEEDED YOU MOST - BARBARA JONES Well ADAM ANT was beside himself with joy, as well as having 6 singles in the top 75. JOE DOLCE knocked off ULTRAVOX at MRIB. Joe was actually an Australian comedian...Do they really exist?! Maybe they do, we all saw Neighbours after all! MOTORHEAD gave us a re-make of the 1959 JOHNNY KIDD top 20 hit. Which at this point came from the "St Valentine`s Day Massacre" E.P. ROXY MUSIC gave another tribute to JL. MADNESS gave us a more-or-less instrumental. FRED WEDLOCK was a very unlikely name, and a comedy hit. PHIL COLLINS went down, with another MRIB number one. SLADE were back in full swing, after the 1980 Reading Festival. THE PRETENDERS had an almost forgotten now hit. VISAGE had a first. XTC were stuck, and still searching for a top tenner. STATUS QUO sang TOM JONES 1974 top 30 hit! THE JAM`s "THAT`S ENTERTAINMENT" was only available on import...the label being Metronome. BEGGAR AND CO, gave us the first chant of the year..as SPANDAU BALLET froze, and later gave us CHANT NO. 2. TALKING HEADS did alright, but missed the top ten...then the girls from the band became the TOM TOM CLUB. THE PASSIONS gave us the first version of a well covered "I`M IN LOVE WITH A GERMAN FILMSTAR, I ONCE SAW IN A BAR". BLONDIE sung some nonsense, such as "eating cars, beating bars". What the hell was DEBBIE HARRY on about? CLIFF went down, and seemed to be missing OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN, both assigned to the EMI label. TEARDROP EXPLODES under JULIAN COPE bounced in to the chart. KELLY MARIE was trying so hard to follow up "FEELS LIKE I`M IN LOVE"...but was maybe too samey. HEATWAVE were coming near the end of chart success. SUSAN FASSBENDER (the late there of) couldn`t follow up "TWILIGHT CAFE". THE GAP BAND went wrong, by trying to do "OOPS UP SIDE YOUR HEAD" twice! GILLAN under IAN GILLAN of course, had those minor hits aplenty before he set his sights on Football e.g. remember the time he was eyeing up Reading FC? BARBARA JONES cut a reggae version of a 1979 hit for RANDY VANWARMER. BARRY MANILOW squeezed into the 40, with a GERARD KENNY penned song...equally as good as Barry`s version. Just outside the 40, sat ELVIS. He was there with a re-issue of the 1968 hit "GUITAR MAN" at 41. Didn`t mention TOYAH. Should`ve done, as she had her first hit, and E.P. "It`s A Mystery" came from the FOUR FROM TOYAH E.P. Club, and The Cleansing. Of which the final 6 will be hard pressed to achieve a top 40 hit between them. Coming soon the up to minute Singles Chart....
February 27, 200916 yr :cheer: For Kelly top of Pre-Orders when it matters most, now let's see if she can hold off The Sats next week, which is doubtful! :( Thanks as always Dave ^_^
February 27, 200916 yr One of my favourite charts of 1981, Visage, Ultravox, Roxy Music all time favourites, I was gutted when Vienna was nipped to the post by Joe Dolce in the official chart, Vienna is one of my all time fave singles to date. Among other favourites from Blondie, Teardrop Explodes, Adam And The Ants, Susan Fassbender, Jam, Spandau Ballet, the list is endless. I grew up listening to New Romantics of the 80s, and some of them are still going strong now, Depeche Mode, Erasure namecheck a few. And I hear The Jam have reformed but without Paul Weller.

With a top 3 of solid downloads. Outside the top 50 lurks: ENRIQUE/CIARA, More KINGS OF LEON (REVELRY), TING TINGS (WE WALK), and CHASE AND STATUS...They all glide into the top 60. Further about the the top 75 are 50 CENT (I GET IT IN), JENNIFER HUDSON (IF THIS ISN`T LOVE), and the FOUR SEASONS (BEGGIN`). Now why don`t people download the best version of Beggin`, by TIMEBOX? GLAS VEGAS hold on to the top 75 by a whisker. So we have to watch METRO STATION, and LADYHAWKE. NOTE: These charts art not the Official Charts (whatever that means)!! Well any chart compiled is correct at the point of time, it was put together, by whatever company. This, though is based on Chart Show tv`s Singles chart, but with added sales to make it, the most up to date charts in Britain at this point of time. Don`t forget the Chart Show top 20 Video Singles, can be seen on Saturdays at 9am, and Sundays at 11am on Sky Channel 365, and FreeSat channel 500.
February 27, 200916 yr Kelly only 3K ahead of Taylor... that was her lead on Tuesday. I thought she would have pulled away more.. How much has she done in total then? 40-45K?
February 27, 200916 yr Thanks Dave Is Madcon's new single Liar anywhere in the top 75. Completely agree about the amazing Timebox version, the original UK hit in, I think, 1967. Expect we will have lost Killers - Spaceman from the top 40 by Sunday, not sure in exchange for what though...
February 27, 200916 yr Expect we will have lost Killers - Spaceman from the top 40 by Sunday, not sure in exchange for what though... I'd say Lemar.
February 27, 200916 yr Author Thanks Dave Is Madcon's new single Liar anywhere in the top 75. Completely agree about the amazing Timebox version, the original UK hit in, I think, 1967. Expect we will have lost Killers - Spaceman from the top 40 by Sunday, not sure in exchange for what though... No sign of "Liar", Tom. Probably Lemar will knockout the Killers. Talking about Timebox...It was around the Summer of 1968. They were all over Radio One, and Radio 2. But they just could not even scrape the top 30. What an injustice to the UK. I do seem to remember some distribution problems of the label "Deram". You may also remember something similar happening in 1976 with the group Starbuck and "Moonlight Feels Right". A big U.S. hit, that just never got the big release here, due to a strike (again, with the record company).
Either Lemar or Perry (who is performing on Ant & Dec on Saturday). Take That managed a 13 place climb from the "Almosts" last week (#50-#37) solely as a result of Ant & Dec and, even allowing for their fan base being well in excess of Perry's, I'm sure she'll manage at least a 5 place climb from her current #44 position. Lemar will definitely climb as he's top 30 on iTunes and climbing so should easily overcome Killers.
February 28, 200916 yr I hope that date on the pre-orders for Green Day's album is true!! :D Nice to see a clearout of the top ten even if the rest of the chart is Baren Karen. Bout time Clarkson got a no1.
