March 7, 200916 yr Author I can't believe they banned Love To Love You Baby! It was very tame compared to Je T'aime or Relax (though I never saw the problem with that one so much, I think it was the gay connotation more than anything). There were some rather silly reasons for banning records weren`t there Tom! Don`t know if you remember when both BBC, and Independant Radio refused to play the Tams, and "There Ain`t Nothing Like Shaggin`". This came from the film (The Shag)...which of course is an American dance! :D British slang causing a riot, there! I remember going to the States (even before that). In Danceland, I heard a woman say "Won`t you come and Shag, with me?!"
March 7, 200916 yr :heehee: I don't really remember that, but as a Northern Soul fan I heard about it. The Tams, of course, had one of the first and biggest Northern Soul crossover hits, when Hey Girl Don't Bother Me went to number one in 1971, though I always liked Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy better...
March 7, 200916 yr It was Mike Read that started the ball rolling. SB played the record when it entered the top 40 at 35. Then after the Mike Read thing, the BBC then refused to play it. The single then smashed up from 35 to 6. The statement SB gave was the usual one, that the BBC gave. Which was first stated with Max Romeo`s "Wet Dream" in 1969. Closely followed by Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin`s "Je`taime Moi Non Plus"...which were both in the chart together for a few weeks in 1969. Meaning that only 18 records were played in "Pick Of The Pops", for a few weeks! "Relax" on it`s own was not played again, until a New Year "Top Of The Pops" special. Subsequently, the record did then get played on Jimmy Savile`s "Old Record Club`s Triple Top Ten Show" in 1986. Which was strange at the time, because usually if a record had been banned, Jimmy still would not play it. As he still did with Serge and Jane, and the Sex Pistols banned couple of records! Not forgetting Judge Dread, of course! Though he did play Donna Summer`s "Love To Love You Baby", which was always missed out on the Top Twenty Show with Tom Browne.Relax was played on the year end chart broadcast on Radio One on December 30, 1984 - I have it on tape! I believe it may also have appeared on a TOTP special in October 1984 which was aired on BBC1 to celebrate the 1,000th episode of TOTP or something like that. Thanks for the charts Dave, i don't always reply but I read this thread every week - much appreciated. This week in 1984 on the Gallup chart the excellent Birds Fly (Whisper To A scream) by Icicle Works was a new entry at #64, having charted previously in July 1983 where it peaked at #90. Did the record ever reach the MRIB chart in either 1983 or more likely 1984? Excellent song and one which should have been a massive hit - it was better than Love Is A Wonderful Colour which in itself is a good song. It was re-issued in 1984 after LIAWC had been a top 20 hit in January 1984.

Radio One used to ban records for the strangest of reasons - Danny Williams' "Dancin' Easy" was banned in 1977 simply because the BBC thought the song amounted to free advertising - the song was the song used in the Martini adverts ("Anytime, any place anywhere, there's a wonderful world you can share, it's the bright one, it's the right one, it's Martini") with slightly amended lyrics - "it's Martini" was changed to "Dancin' Easy". Yet they never thought of banning other songs that were used in commercials including Jeans On the previous year which was originally heard in a Levi jeans advert!

Forwarding on 13 years I was a bit surprised that Radio 1 didn't ban French Kiss by Lil Louis due to its use of the sound of a rather over excited woman! I think the Chart Show used to just show the first minute or so of the Lil Louis song and I don't know if it ever appeared on TOTP as I didn't really watch it that much in the summer of 89.
March 7, 200916 yr Lol Nena  99 Red Balloons  love the #1, I still remember her TOTP performance, hairy pits ;)I remember Tracie (Style Council backing singer and had a few hits of her own) saying in Record Mirror that Nena looked like she had the Black Forest under her armpits!

They were doing a top 120 then. In 1983 it clambered to 95, then in 1984 it snook in at 67. I can`t remember the song getting airplay on ILR. This would have benefited it, as in the 31 - 120 part of the chart, airplay was included. You are absolutely correct about Relax. It was the October 1000th edition of TOTP. It was played on the Top 40 of 1984 (the one of a couple of occasions where Richard John Skinner plays 40 records in 2 hours)! And looking back to a big pile of BBC PasBs, Jimmy actually did not play it in 1985, but did from Jan 1986...when he started to do 2 years ago on a 3 week cycle basis.

Radio One always started it from the word "Crime"...with the repeating of the word "Sex" cut off!

They were still a bit prudish back then. Edited March 7, 200916 yr by Robbie
March 8, 200916 yr C'mon Chip Diddy Chip. Cudi had his time in the top 20, now as Missy Elliott would put it, 'he got to go'.
