..Well, it's only controversial to a bunch of Mail/Express readers....

Some sections of the media (pretty much the SAME sections of the media who are currently exploiting the whole 'Jade circus' for all it's worth.... ) are getting all "moral" about the National Lottery part funding (er, they gave the film about £150k, peanuts...) a film called "Bronson", which is about a notorious criminal "Charles Bronson" who was put in prison for armed robbery and committed some more serious crimes whilst in prison... He has been in solitary confinement for about 30 years, but has actually won awards for his poetry and art.... So, er what's the big deal...? It's not actually as if Bronson himself has received any money from this film (unlike The Krays who did financially benefit from the film about them...).

There is Lottery money is specifically earmarked for funding British films (ie, it cannot be used for any other purpose..), the Lottery Fund has part funded and supported many films, including the BAFTA/Oscar award winning "Slumdog Millionnaire".. No one would argue the worthiness of supporting that film, but God forbid that a film-maker might want to explore far more dark and disturbing themes.... It doesn't follow that if you appreciate it for the film that it is and what it tries to achieve, that you necessarily condone the man and what the did; most serious cinema-goers are a tad more sophisticated than that and can actually separate the two, and it IS the more discerning cinema-goer that this film is aimed at, given the fact that it is a Danish director (Nicolas Refn) who is known for some pretty serious, disturbing, yet sophisticated and complex works - the Pusher trilogy is basically a Danish version of "Trainspotting", but far more dark and edgy.... Refn is no fool, I seriously doubt he would make a film condoning Bronson's crimes, and he's not the sort of director who courts the drongoes who get off on Hostel-style "torture porn" or Guy Richie "Mockney Geeeezaaaaahhhhhhhh" drivel.

At the end of the day, the criticism is based on ignorance I feel - Ignorance of Refn's work, ignorance of the necessity to support British film, and a blase assumption that people are making that Bronson is actually benefitting financially from this film... Perhaps the Tabloid media should stop criticising this and look to themselves and how they have acted with sheer sensationalism with regards to the Jade Goody and Chantelle and Alfie affairs.....

Still, it has to be said, a bit of self-righteous "tabloid outrage" is probably the best advertising Refn could possibly have for his film.....

Good promo - yes

Good Story - no

The tabloids really should look at what they are writing before they print it. They look like such fools.

Not as foolish as the reader.

Why (cinema-goers) so serious?

Did I not make it pretty obvious what the issue was....? Ergo, the tabloid media, in its usual 'totally throwing rocks in a glass house' manner acting all totally moralistic on the one hand, and then continuing to exploit the Jade Goody situation on the other....

Dude, I begin to wonder why you post in Perspectives because it just appears to me that half the time you dont actually grasp the questions being asked or the issues being raised....
