March 14, 200916 yr So what if they don't know it? It's irrelevant outside the world of History. <_< Spot on. Doesn't matter one jot. Who cares one iota these days about Auschwitz? Far more important things to think of like will we get great winners of Britain's Got Talent and X-Factor this year. For me subjects like Geography and History just shouldn't be taught in schools. Why do youngsters need to know about the past anyway? They are the future after all. The only Geography some will need is where their local Benefits office is anyway! :yahoo: Edited March 14, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris
March 14, 200916 yr Just out of interest, how old are the people who the article concerns? Because I didn't learn about Auschwitz till something like Year 9 I think..

At 49 years of age I have no idea what Auschwitz is. Think it was some sort of POW camp but don't think we learnt it in school at all. Why are so many people stuck in the past anyway ? Can't we move on and look to the future instead? I think the only things school-kids really need to know are how to read, write and add-up to get their correct change in shops. Any other subjects are a complete waste of time. Well certainly were for me anyway. If it was up to me school would be voluntary. Half the teenagers don't want to be there so why force them? I hated it and left at the earliest possible date at 16. Edited March 14, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris

Over 1 million jews gassed to death? Tortured, experimented on and kill for their beliefs? Or has all that blown over your Sun reading mind? I hope to god that you're drunk mate...
March 14, 200916 yr If I had my way you would be banned from this section of the forum, of course that is a matter for Rob and Scott and admins but every single thread you post in you hijack with pathetic childish drivel that has no place in a forum based on intelligent debate

I don't know much about them though so how can I have an opinion? I vaguely know that Auschwitz was a POW camp in Europe but not which country it was in even. Tend to study pop music and films rather than history.

Forget it all happened! Yeh, thats the way forward isnt it. Put frankly, people like you bloody disgust me :| How DARE you insinuit such a thing should be forgotten, it's just SICK  An entire civilisation of people wiped out, an entire race, just cleansed for who they are. But hey, if that's not important to you then so be it. oh and btw, it's in Poland (Y) I assume you know where POLAND is?

History is important, Stalin, Chruchill, Hitler are part of our history etc etc, I had to learn all about Jutland, Crimea, Vietnam and I found it all interesting, Geography is essential if a person wants to travel the world, I don't know how you could come up with that statement, the young have to know what the world has been through, people have died for our country. Seriously... if you are drunk get of the flipping net.

I am not allowed an opinion here. I'll stick to music in future which I know far more about than events of 50 or 60 years ago. Carry on living in the past if you all want. Have fun. Bye. Edited March 14, 200916 yr by Crazy Chris

March 14, 200916 yr What's more important? Knowing who the winner of BGT will be, or the history of events to why we are still luckily here alive today. Hmm, I know which one I'd choose.

March 14, 200916 yr Couldn't have said it better myself. These ridiuclous posts just emphasise how sad the state of Britain is in some cases.. And what makes it even more sad is there is around 35 years difference in age between the 2 of them
March 14, 200916 yr And what makes it even more sad is there is around 35 years difference in age between the 2 of them  It does shock me tbh that me and Chris as 17 year olds seem to know more about this than a supposed adult... Edited March 14, 200916 yr by James.
March 15, 200916 yr I'm gonna take the opposite side of a bunch of people I tend to agree with and say this article is absolutely garbage. Since when does knowing what Auschwitz is define a person's intelligence? Also, why ask this question above anything else? It'd be like presuming someone had no idea what the September 11th attacks were about if they did not know who Khalid al-Mihdhar was. I fully agree with the fact that learning history is of the utmost importance, as we must understand our past mistakes to progress, but just because someone doesn't know what Auschwitz is does not mean they have no idea what the Holocaust was. I'd be a lot more disturbed if only a quarter of the people surveyed did not know what the Holocaust was; this just seems like a natural progression. It's been roughly 80 years since the Holocaust occurred, so facts about the Holocaust that might have been nearly common knowledge 40/30 years ago may be slightly less so now, but people still know about the Holocaust as a general overview which is probably the most important thing to know. I'd say that people are no less intelligent than they were 20/30/40/50 years ago. Surveys for one can be fairly sketchy unless it was taken by everyone in the UK (I'd like to know exactly what areas the creators of this survey targeted), and on top of that the question they asked seems irrelevant to general intelligence to me. Something like 'Do you know what the Holocaust was?' would have produced much more reliable results.
