Condoms not the answer in AIDS fight, Pope says

The Associated Press

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE -- Pope Benedict XVI said Tuesday that the distribution of condoms is not the answer in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Benedict has never before spoken explicitly on condom use although he has stressed that the Roman Catholic Church is in the forefront of the battle against AIDS. The Vatican encourages sexual abstinence to fight the spread of the disease.

"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms," the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane headed to Yaounde, Cameroon. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

Some priests and nuns working with victims of the AIDS pandemic ravaging Africa question the church's opposition to condoms.

The pope also said that he intends to make an appeal for "international solidarity" for Africa in the face of the global economic downturn.

He said that while the church does not propose specific economic solutions, it can give "spiritual and moral" suggestions.

Describing the current crisis as the consequence of "a deficit of ethics in economic structures," the pope said, "It is here that the church can make a contribution."

Benedict's seven-day pilgrimage will take him to Cameroon and Angola.

Africa is the fastest-growing region for the Roman Catholic Church.

Do you agree with the Pope?

Well Popes are against contraception so okay. ^_^

I disagree though as a person, because a world without protection like condoms makes AIDS a lot worse and stronger to fight.

And come on, it's the Catholic Church, many of their teachings are just made and contradicts directly or indirectly to the Bible. :(

this highlights just how unreal the church actually is, be it roman catholic or whatever..

how can the head of such a huge, powerful organisation spout such rubbish is worrying.

Was he dropped on his head as a child :/

Condoms prevent aids not spread it. No condoms = Aids

THIS.

Spot-on for the bolded one. That's what I mean. :D

Through their teachings and stone age views successive popes have killed more people than Hitler

I hold the AIDS epedemic fairly and squarely at the Vatican's door

I'm in full agreement - in fact, I think the last evil bast*rd, JP2, should be dug up and hung out for people to throw stones at for his crimes against Africa. This one, well, I think the Nazis must have warped his brain....

What's most annoying is that this idea the church has that everyone is exactly the same! Are they even being releastic. Hello we're human beings with needs and not exactly the whole world will abstain because they were told to or in the name of the lord. Grief, how much money governments spend on promoting condoms, safer sex, aids/hiv education and then the pope comes out with this irrational statement. He has become rather annoying =/ all we need now is for him to baptize /interview the devil himself or South Africa's to-be president, Jacob Zuma. Especially seeing how similar their opinions are about AIDS. (abstaination and taking showers are the cure to AIDS etc)

I'm not defending the old fella ... but he is the leader of the Catholic Church ... so he can hardly go about shouting 'shag and shag away' can he? What I do suggest he does though is .... just say nothing!

Does anyone here ever agree with the Pope? He's an idiot. Usually I don't mind if people want to follow a religion, even though I think all religion is a stupid idea, but this particular tangent of Christianity just seems so bizarre to me.

In my book, creating 6 or more children that will all be born with HIV/AIDS is more of a sin than preventing pregnancy, but what do I know?

Why is such a large proportion of Africa Roman Catholic? I know it's not exactly a well developed country but surely even they can see something wrong with spreading this disease? I know if I was a carrier I'd rather die a 'sinner' than produce multiple children who will die young and lose their parent(s) in their teens. (if they live that long)

I'll admit, I'm not quite sure about the percentages of people with HIV/AIDS in Africa, so if I just suggested that most of the country wipes themselves out I'll admit that's not such a hot idea.

Yeah, he may be the leader of the Catholic Church but do you think you just have to follow all his 'words'? No.

Him, saying nothing makes him nothing but a coward though. ;)

as of Dec 2007, almost 24 million people in Africa are HIV+. I can only imagine the figure's gone up since this, though....

Future generations will look back aghast at how we let this most evil of religions wipe an entire continent out.

The Pope a man of God? Morelike the Devil incarnate I reckon.

of course not, but he should recognise the problem and support the use of condoms to prevent the spread. but he wont will he because contraception is evil <_<.

Wow, so does he expect for these people to never have sex again and just remain abstinent for the remainder of their lives?

Yeah okay, sure. Dumb f***er.

I'm sure that telling these people that using a condom is a sin will only make the epidemic worse, because lets face it, 95% of these people are going to continue to have sex.

It's in their culture. To have lots of children, purely because of the high risk that they won't survive. They need to be taught that it isn't, and condoms will stop HIV/Aids going around and being passed on to children.
