July 25, 200915 yr Author As I've said before, I have far more respect for Motor Racing Drivers whom I think are far far more worthy of the money they earn than Profesional Footballers, and the near death incident to Massa from the spring debris from Barrichello's Brawn today just shows it. He was quite literally inches away from certain death.

Yep same Even drivers that I dislike fully deserve every penny they get as motorsport is an incredibly dangerous profession Another couple of inches below and we would be mourning Massa tonight without a shadow of a doubt
July 25, 200915 yr Massa having surgery tonight for a fractured skull From Ferrari >>>> After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary , Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest . Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable. Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care.
July 25, 200915 yr Thank GOD he's ok. While i'm horridly anti Ferrari and i don't rate Massa much, i'm so so so so glad he is going to be ok. Shame he can't race. it's nice to see someone other than Piquet spinning. Oh and it may seem insensitive, but :cheer: at Alonso's pole. I've been waitin all season for us to show a slight bit of speed
July 25, 200915 yr Author Saturday, 25 July 2009 17:38 UK Massa to have surgery after crash BBC Sport.com Felipe Massa is to undergo surgery after suffering skull damage and concussion in a high-speed accident during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying. The Ferrari driver, 28, slammed head on into a tyre wall after a piece of debris that had fallen off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car hit his helmet. Ferrari said his condition upon arrival at a Budapest hospital was "stable" and that the Brazilian was conscious. He will remain "under observation in intensive care" after the operation. The incident comes less than a week after Henry Surtees, 18, was killed in what was described as a "freak" accident during a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch. The son of motorsport legend John Surtees was struck by a wheel which flew off a competitor's car. Massa - winner of 11 grands prix in his career - did manage to briefly apply the brakes as went off the Hungaroring track before his car hit the tyre wall at around 125mph. The incident was caused by a spring that had seconds earlier fallen off the rear suspension of Barrichello's car and subsequently flew up and hit Massa's helmet just above his left eye causing considerable impact. Massa was swiftly attended to by trackside medics before being taken to the circuit's medical centre after which he was airlifted to hospital for further examination. Referring to Surtees, Barrichello refused to believe the two incidents were coincidence and called for further improvements in motorsport safety to be made despite the significant progress since Ayrton Senna's death in 1994. "I honestly don't believe in coincidences in life," he said. "Things happen for a reason and I think this is the second message. "Imola [where Senna died] was a message and the cars were improved. Unfortunately, we lost a boy [surtees], which is tremendously sad. "It is not a coincidence something happened right now. In the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers' Association) we talked quite a lot about it yesterday - and something needs to be done. Absolutely. "But I don't know what. We need to sit down and have a look at it. I think the cars are a hell of a lot safer, really a lot safer, but there is no coincidence on this and something needs to be looked at." Barrichello's team boss Ross Brawn said the team were "naturally concerned" about Massa's condition. "We had a problem with the back of the car and we are still investigating," he added. "We haven't had the piece back from [motorsport governing body] the FIA yet so once we get it back we can understand what occurred. "It's the first time we've really had a problem with the car as it's been so reliable." McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh added: "What happened today was a shock. "We've got to make sure we do everything we can to make F1 as safe as it can be. "But a spring coming off and being in a collision four seconds later is an incredible circumstance and coincidence. "You have to remember that motor racing is dangerous and that racing drivers are incredibly brave. It's all too easy to become blase about that."
July 25, 200915 yr While I wish Felipe all the best I hope there will not be any kneejerk reactions within the sport with regards safety, driver safety is important but so is good racing and there is no evidence that today's incident could have been prevented, a small piece of suspension part taking a direct hit on Felipe's face when a track is so wide is a millions to one situation almost remeniscent of a 17" tyre going through an 18" hole in Melbourne and killing that marshal I hope that the FIA will not use today as an excuse to sterilise racing more with over the top safety measures

Whilst Felipe was lucky, the accident was an incredibly unlucky occurrence, and the fact his helmet along with the car and the tyre wall meant this was not a near fatality is testiment to the improved safety within the sport over the past 20 years.
July 25, 200915 yr Massa in life-threatening condition after surgery By PAUL LOGOTHETIS (AP) – 21 minutes ago BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hospital officials say Formula One driver Felipe Massa is in "life-threatening" condition after surgery for a fractured skull from a high-speed crash at Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying. Officials at the AEK military hospital said Saturday that Massa will be kept sedated on a respirator in an intensive care unit. Medical director Peter Bazso said at a news conference that "Massa's condition is serious, life-threatening but stable." Bazso and chief surgeon Lajos Zsiros say they expect Massa to be awoken Sunday. The 28-year-old Brazilian had surgery one hour after arriving at the hospital, the doctors said. Massa was struck in the helmet by a loose part from another car and his car slammed straight into a tire barrier. Not out of the woods yet :o
July 26, 200915 yr Terrible unlucky accident for Massa, hope he recovers quickly. Did anyone else see the drivers trying to work out who was on pole at the end when all the times disappeared. Thought it was funny of Alonso going round every one asking what time did you do, and him saying I did 1.25 or something :) .
July 26, 200915 yr Alonso out  Gutted the wheel thing ruined our best run all season, but oh well. Pitting it was a good idea, save the engine.
July 26, 200915 yr YAY! FOR LEWIS! :cheer: Got everything right today and the first driver to win who uses KERS! Good performance from Kimi too and was relieved when Vettel went out for Jenson's sake!
July 26, 200915 yr And still there are wheels falling off cars - I think we DO need some very quick and strong regulations to prevent against this happening. Alonso should have stopped when it appeared his wheel was loose. Otherwise it's not looking good for Button, i hope Brawn can find some solutions to their severe lack of pace over the summer break or this championship is fast falling away from him.
July 26, 200915 yr Renault banned from Valencia :o :o :manson: There will be riots in Spain over this, Alonso is the national hero and won't be racing http://twitter.com/noblef1 Genuine source as Jonathan Noble is the editor of Autosport
July 26, 200915 yr Author Sunday, 26 July 2009 17:47 UK BBC Sport Renault suspended from next race Renault have been suspended from the next Grand Prix in Valencia after a wheel from Fernando Alonso's car came loose at the Hungaroring on Sunday. The pit crew failed to attach Alonso's right-front wheel correctly and it bounced across the track. Race stewards ruled that Renault released Alonso from a pit stop knowing the wheel was not properly secured and then failed to tell the driver. Renault seem certain to appeal against the decision. Should it stand, the ban would apply to the whole team and would deny Alonso the chance to race in front of his home fans. The Spanish two-times world champion was leading the race having started on pole when he came in for his first stop. When he emerged, it quickly became clear that he had a problem with the front-right wheel, which soon worked its way loose altogether. The incident came a week after 18-year-old Formula Two driver Henry Surtees was killed when he was struck by a loose wheel during a race.
July 26, 200915 yr FFS. They really have it in for f***ing Renault. I'm getting quite fed up of the bloody stupid and moronic decisions that harm Renault. Banning Alonso for a Grand Prix in spain is THE single stupidest thing they have done this season. Including the Asia-Pacific twilight races. If Renault fail the appeal then there will either be mass riots or Valencia is going to be one very empty race track. I just worry that if we fail the appeal there is that small chance of us getting a bigger ban. Our season is competely over. We haven't got a cat in hells chance of top5
July 26, 200915 yr Another thing, something which the BBC comentary pointed out. Alonso left the pits with that wheel firmly on. The only reason it came off was because that cover span round and undid the nut. It was an accident end of.
July 26, 200915 yr I think personally that this is a vindictive action by Mosley against Renault as Briatore has been the main public speaker of the FOTA movement that has been trying to break away from F1 so this is Mosley's vindictive streak to put one over on Briatore

This smells the same as the mass damper banning. The FIA apporved the mass damper in 2005 and when it looked like we were going to wipe the floor with Ferrari they decided to kill it after McLaren cried because they couldn't get theirs to work properly. Theirs never got banned and now the whole feild uses the McLaren version :manson:
July 26, 200915 yr This is an extreme reaction and I do think it's very harsh. On the other hand, having been there when Henry Surtees was killed and after the severe injuries suffered by Massa I believe motorsport must react. Renault should have told Alonso to stop as he could have caused another significant accident had thst wheel hit someone.
