A 14-year-old girl will go before a court on child pornography charges after she put nude pictures of herself online.

The teenager, who has not been identified, allegedly posted 30 indecent images on social networking site MySpace.

After being arrested, she reportedly claimed to have posted the pictures for her boyfriend's pleasure.

The images could be viewed by anyone registered as a friend on the site and also seen by people who knew her name.

American police swooped after a tip off from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

They spent a month investigating the case before charging the girl, who has not been identified but is from New Jersey, with two counts of possessing and distributing child pornography.

If convicted, she will have to register as a sex offender under Megan's Law, which gives parents the right to know the identity of sex offenders in their area.

The decision to prosecute her was attacked by the mother of the girl whose death inspired the legislation.

Maureen Kanka, whose daughter Megan was raped and murdered by a neighbour when she was seven, said that prosecutors are harming children more than helping them.

My, that teen didn't follow simple rules... :(

And the child getting murdered is depressing. <_<

She's a minor...why aren't her parents the ones facing court?

And whilst the sex offenders register is a good idea on the face of things, this kind of incident simply makes a mockery of it.

Stupid dumb bint, if she wanted her bf to have pics like that she should have texted them to him or something, deserves all the gets

While she is not exactly Gary Glitter rules are rules

Yeah, but it's hardly child porn if she's making it herself! What next, arresting 3 year olds running about naked for public indecency?! :P

She is not a criminal but she is incredibly stupid

But the blame for me lies with the parents, why were her parents not tracking and keeping eye on what she is up to online ? at 14 years old her parents should be monitoring everything she does online so they should be in the dock along with her as they should have prevented her from behaving like this

And technically she was aiding and abetting child porn, 99% of people accept MySpace adds from randomers unlike Facebook so complete strangers of all ages would have had access to her pornographic pics so technically she was aiding and abetting in child pornography by broadcasting it on MySpace to strangers

The penalty does seem excessive and most of the blame to me lies with the parents but she is a fukkin idiot for sure

At the age of 14 someone should have everything they do monitored? Fair enough if it was four years younger, but realistically that's not gonna happen with teenagers...she's an idiot, granted, but there wasn't much the parents could do. You may as well say that the parents should know exactly what she's doing when she goes out - it's impossible to monitor unless she's chaperoned. I don't see that one being a particularly popular option with parents, even for the internet!

There's two sides to this though....

Yes, the penalty is frankly ridiculous..... So, they're going to protect children from child porn, by prosecuting children whose only "crime" is stupidity and naivete.... Yeah, right, makes about as much sense as the old "To save the village, we had to burn it" argument from the Vietnam war..... <_<

I would be actually be curious to know if her boyfriend was actively encouraging her behaviour.... If so, he's more guilty than she is....

To play Devil's Advocate for a moment though, if this prosecution were to discourage other underage girls from posting nude shots of themselves on Myspace in the future, well, maybe setting an example in this case will have served a purpose, kids wont really learn anything if it's their parents who are held solely responsible, although the parents must surely shoulder some of the blame here.....

Poor comparison :P

She strips off in a park she would be arrested and charged with indecent exposure which would get her on the sex offenders list as a flasher

And yeah I do think parents should monitor what they are doing until say reach 15, 15 is a young adult 14 is still age of playing with barbie

If I ever become a dad then certainly I would not let them have a MySpace or Facebook until they are 15 without having the password and I would install key logging software to track what they are doing online, that is not to say that 15 year olds should do what this girl done just 15 is young adult and 14 is child

^

As an addendum to my point above... I would say that the Media is also partly responsible here... The Media has, in the past 10 years or so, been sexualising ever younger and younger girls, encouraging them to be "mini whores".... One also has to look at the partially naked, "just-been-freshly-fukked" shots of Miley Cyrus taken when she was 15... This girl would almost certainly be in the Miley demographic.....

The Media today has a hell of a lot to answer for if you ask me.....

Beat me to it Scott I was about to type that about Miley Cyrus

Very much agree with what you say about her boyfriend.

I also agree about setting an example...but there are ways of setting an example and there are ways of setting an example. Putting her on the sex offender's register is ludicrous.

They should indeed have monitored what she was doing on the internet - and who's to say that they weren't? They couldn't possibly have monitored her 24/7. If you insist on constantly "spying" on your teenage kids, you will almost certainly find yourself on the receiving end of a rather nasty rebellion with a sad and complete lack of trust and respect. For me, it's more about the education of the child, teaching them the very real dangers of such behaviour - that's where the parents failed in this case.

I dont agree with putting her on the Sex Offenders register.... She's not exploited anyone other than herself.... The Sex Offenders register should only be used against the seriously nasty pieces of work out there who deliberately and premeditatively set out to target children and exploit them, NOT against the naive, stupid girl, or the equally stupid bloke who accidentaly picks up a 15 year old girl in an over-21s nightclub on a drunken night out..... THAT is an inappropriate (ab)use of the act.....

But some sort of sanction does need to be in place to discourage this sort of thing though, she needs to be scared silly, community service with rape victims perhaps....? And, frankly, I would ban the Media from using models under the age of 18 tbh, unless it's for something specific like advertising kids' or teenagers' clothes, shots like the Miley Cyrus ones are just plain nasty and no one is gonna convince me that they dont eventually lead to things happening like this silly young girl exploiting herself for anyone to look at on Myspace.....

What are you on about?! Have you never spoken to a 14 year old in your life? I do not know one 14 year old (especially girls) that I have as a friend on Myspace that doesn't have pictures of herself online. Granted none of them are naked but some of them are pretty damn close. Should of these be put on the sex offenders register as well? This would mean at least 75% of teenage girls are on their, is that really practical?

Not all parents know what their kids are doing online, I bet a lot of parents have never been on a social network site in their life and wouldn't know the first thing about using one. And what do you think changes when a child changes from 14 to 15 years old? It's not like some magical transformation when they turn into an adult. You seem to have created this horrible stereotype that all 14 year olds are incapable of using social networking sites but as soon as they turn 15 they can. Bizarre. :s

I have a 14 year old niece, a 15 year old niece, a 14 year old step niece and I can assure you none of them have any of the type of pictures you are talking about online nor know anyone that does, that obviously means you hang around with slags and sluts if you know so many people with no self respect that are prepared to degrade themselves in that way even if they are not totally nude

When those girls get raped one day or get an online cyber stalker then it will be their tough luck for flaunting themselves in a provocative way like that

Dude, bottle some of that acid... You're going a bit far with that tbh..... Yes, we can all agree that this girl is a bit stupid, rather naive, but come on..... Especially IF her boyfriend is actually encouraging her to do this.... You should really be targeting the media more, who, as I say, is responsible for sexualising young girls at increasingly young ages and making out like this sort of activity is "cool" or "desirable"...

I was talking about Jonny's mates who he readily admitted the majority of them post pictures like this girl or very near to it, I would guess only a small minority of them did it under encouragement to their boyfriend, more likely they just want male attention on MySpace and get to know lads for a shag, basically totally cheapening themselves, getting male attention by posting those type of pictures can very readily lead to harmful male attention, how many of those 15 year old lads they are trying to get via PC2PC are in reality pot bellied 50 year old lorry drivers from Essex pretending to be 15 year old lads ?

That is my point, by acting like sluts they are far far more lilely given their lack of self respect to get the wrong type of attention
