Any one of these as their official debut would be much better than them resorting to the rather discredited and sh!t fall-back policy of doing a cover of a much respected, highly influential and well established act to get noticed, you have to concede, it's not a particularly good start.... Could you imagine someone like Goldfrapp, Portishead or Ladytron doing something as incredibly naff....? Hell no, and presumably it's by these standards that the girls themselves would probably want to be compared to given their method of career path... But, you can, however come to expect it from a crappy, cheesy manufactured group, so you cant exactly blame anyone for thinking that they're just another bunch of chancers, and like I say, it really seems to me that DM are the "flavour of the month" for a lot of people to come along and take a slice out of.....
i'm not a fan of the releasing of Covers personally, but i do quite like this song.

I agree that you shouldn't start on a cover. Especially when you have some good material of your own.

I don't think any of the acts they are influenced by would release a cover as a lead single, although i do know that DM rank very high in their list of influences and the very 80's electro sound is what they are heavily influenced by and what they do sound quite like, so in that respect the DM cover ticks the right boxes.

I don't think they or indeed anyone expects this to trouble the Top75 never mind the iTunes top300. It won't get them their break, and if they ever get it, this song will have been long since swept under the carpet.

It's incredibly hard to get Combichrist or Client stuff from anywhere that's not specialist... Both acts are on a German Underground/Industrial/Electronic dance label called Out of Line... http://www.outofline.de/content/index.htm

So, no probs getting their stuff in Continental Europe, Scandinavia, etc, quite hard both here and in the US.... Mind you, a lot of Out of Line stuff gets distributed in the US by Metropolis, but there doesn't seem to be a similar distributor to do the job in UK... Out of Line stuff, I think, used to get distributed by Pinnacle.... If you want a blast of CC, just click on the link in my sig, that'll take you to their myspace page which has a fair few videos and tracks to play....

As for DM - well, the new album, "Sound of the Universe" is fantastic... For classic DM, you really cant go wrong with "Violator" (where the original of Enjoy the Silence can be found), Black Celebration, Ultra, Songs of Faith and Devotion or Playing the Angel.... Their two classic compilation albums - "Singles 81-85" and "Singles 86-98" are serious essentials for a crash course in DM.... And if you're feeling a bit adventurous, there's the 3 CD "Remixes 81-04" compilation as well, which is an absolutely fantastic purchase also, but one which you should wait until you hear the originals before getting imo....

If you're based in Oz, you might know of a bunch of Aggrotek/Cyberpunk nutters called Angelspit.... I got their first two albums, "Krankhaus" and "Blood, Death and Ivory".... Great stuff.....

I haven't heard of Angelspit, but i'll look them up along with Combichrist and Client.

I'll start hunting online for the DM stuff after i've revised and sat the quiz i have in 7 or so hours.

Agreed, which is kind of weird why they would make it their 'calling card'.... Even weirder when you consider their own material is actually a bit better than this.....

It's a serious mis-step IMO, because it's put people who might be potential fans immediately against them, by coming in and stripping all the soul out of a genuine classic.... Which is why you never, EVER do a cover as your debut single.....

By the way Shoat, did you compare the girls in RBW to Cristina from Lacuna Coil....? GOD, what a contrast.... Elegant Italian passion and loveliness compared to the dull, greyness of "Sarf Lahndon" slightly chavvy Karaoke birds..... Er, it's really no contest for me tbh.....

Agreed. I'm still not keen on their own tracks, although I think with a bit of investment there may be potential...

Lacuna Coil aren't really totally to my taste, but there's no denying Cristina has a lot more passion in her performance which is what the Red Blooded Women totally lacked.

but it doesn't tick the right boxes, because as a Depeche Mode fan, I find it an incredibly DULL and cheesy cover and doing things in this manner has set me against them almost immediately regardless of their other material; and given the evidence on this thread, I am far from being the only one who feels this way.... And surely as a fan of this type of music, I am part of the target audience that they are going for....

There's a very big difference between being influenced by a band and using that influence to inform your own style and just doing some naff cover in order to get a bit of cred amongst an established and respected band's fanbase..... I feel that RBW have done the latter, whereas the acts I mentioned in my previous post have all done the former.... If indeed it was RBW's intention to curry favour amongst DM's absolute legion of fans, then I can only say that their attempt is an unmitigated failure, and they have quite possibly alienated themselves from potentially finding fans amongst the DM faithful by doing such a naff cover of a fan favourite.....

I really don't think they intended to win over DM fans by covering a fan favourite.

Reading through the blogs on their myspace, it seems i am mistaken about this being the debut, and shall edit the opening post accordingly. They appear to be classing You Made Your Bed as the debut for the band :w00t: . The following quotes may be of interest to you.

So, moving forwards. In what is probably the worst kept secret in music we can now confirm that our next single will be....

ENJOY THE SILENCE!

We spent a long time deciding what to go with next, and we were a little apprehensive going with a cover so early on, but it's been getting such a phenomenal reception live, that it seemed hard to ignore it. For those of you that like your mixes, we can confirm that we've got some fantastic ones this time around from:

DESIGNER DRUGS

HEADS WE DANCE

PARRALOX

BASSMONKEYS

7TH HEAVEN

We met with the video director earlier today about the video (which is going to be quite a departure from the last one), so it's pretty much all systems go!

Depeche Mode covers are like buses. You wait for one to turn up, then they all turn up at once haha! So, we announced that we were releasing our version of 'Enjoy The Silence' at the weekend, then found out that The Saturdays are also releasing a Depeche Mode cover 'Just Can't Get Enough'. They've obviously got good taste - we're really pleased that more people might get to hear some of DM's music. And it's great to see a girlband doing so well - it's all about female power haha!

and finally, a note on the video

Video!!!!!!

Just a quick note to say that FINALLY our video for Enjoy The Silence is on the front page - and there is not one, but TWO versions!

We love the Depeche Mode version so much that we really wanted to create something visually that was respectful to the original - so what you've got is our 'homage' to Anton Corbijn's original video, but with their rural landscapes replaced with some iconic London imagery. And of course, the DM boys replaced with us wearing some fierce outfits haha!

We really hope you enjoy it!

Big Love

RBWxx

I know i am slightly bias in that i am a big fan, but i don't think they had intentions of winning new fans with a throw away cover of a great, classic song.

I'm sorry, but that stuff on the blog just has to be the biggest pile of utter sh!te that I have ever read this side of Lily Allen.....

The video is an "homage" to Anton Corbijn is it...?? Oh, FUKK OFF it is..... Corbijn is a director of great vision and artistry, this video frankly just looked SOOOOOOO chucked together it's unreal.....

And I see we have the tedious utterings of "girl power" again..... Oh dear oh dear oh dear....... -_-

Sorry, but after reading that utter PISH, I'm even less likely to listen to anything they have to put out......

"Phenomenal reception live" eh...? What, the couple of hundred no doubt totally blotto people who turn up to the gigs who probably only cheered it cos it was the only song they knew the words to, and would likely NOT be cheering it in the cold, sober light of day after they saw that video on Youtube......

OF COURSE covers get cheered at the gigs, it's generally because the peeps at the gig have, had a skinful and cheer it because of the familiarity......

I can't comment on the gigs, i have never been to one of their gigs, they haven't left London yet -_-

They do communicate with all their fan's via Myspace, i myself have had replies from the band.

As for the video, it will have been filmed and edited on a shoestring. I'd have preferred something more RBW personally.

I do think the 'girl power' bit was a bit of a joke, given the 'hehe' after it.

I don't think ive heard many covers which are better than the originals to be honest.

Im sick and tired though of these relentless tripe attempts at music being spewed out of this country, it seems the girlbands just keep on coming,

one load of talentless $h!te after another.

'Colour Me Dirty' was OK, but the sample is the only thing which made it bearable in the first place.

Its certainly not the first time dire covers have been released by girlbands though lately.

'Girls Aloud/Sugababes - Walk This Way' & 'The Saturdays - Just Can't Get Enough' are among the worst pieces of music of the 21st Century,

though the originals are pretty bad to.

However the 'Sugababes' and 'Girls Aloud' have provided at least a few good songs, e.g 'About You Know', 'The Loving Kind' etc.

I do wish 'The Veronicas' would record some new material and release it here.

Well, the point about gigs is that it's easy to get caught up "in the moment" at a gig when a band do a cover just for the "hell of it", I've enjoyed plenty of these sorts of "moments", usually accompanied by fair intakes of alcohol..... As much as I enjoyed these moments, it doesn't necessarily follow that I'd really want the band to release the thing as a single, that's when it become less of an enjoyable, slightly drunken, "for the hell of it" moment at a gig, and more of a contrived thing..... And, i'd be willing to bet that when they have done this live, they've put a little bit more energy into it.... So, yeah, probably a bit of fun as a live thing, which should've stayed just that.....

I've seen a few covers in my time at gigs, but honestly i liked them.

Given the gigs have been at bars, i think a drunken reception is the most likely answer :heehee:

I haven't seen a clip of Enjoy The Silence live, but i've seen a clip of Colour Me Dirty which was excellent, they switched to Colour Me Pjanoo half way though  Which is just an alternate version of the song, with a different sample.

They looked pretty decent live and sounded great.

I don't think ive heard many covers which are better than the originals to be honest.

"Enjoy the Silence" is very far from being bad, or even slightly bad, so there's a very big difference between this and the S(h)ats covering "Just Cant Get Enough"..... If you were to ask a bunch of Depeche Mode fans to make up a list of their 10 faveourite DM tracks, I can pretty much assure you that "Enjoy the Silence" would likely be in the top 3 of every person's list.... So, it's a very brave individual or band who does a cover of this.... Lacuna Coil did it justice, I can honestly say that as a fan of DM and as a fan of Lacuna Coil, they got it absolutely right, the correct balance of giving the song the respect it deserves, but still doing it in their own style, which is Rock.... But of course, Lacuna Coil aren't some girl band who arrived on the scene about five minutes ago; even Marilyn Manson came a cropper when he did Personal Jesus (a truly dreadful cover which did neither the original nor himself any justice...), which he never even mentions anymore funnily enough....

My point is, Depeche Mode are THAT good, that it needs someone incredibly confident in their own abilities as an artist to attempt to cover a song of theirs..... LC did it, and Goldfrapp did an absolutely beautiful reconstruction of "Halo" (which appeared on the Remixes album) which used Gahan and Alison's voices to incredible effect, simply astounding..... Unfortunately the fact that DM are THAT good also means that every two bit hack whose only been on the scene for two minutes thinks they can come along and steal their considerable thunder.....

Depeche Mode -

Lacuna Coil - :)

Red Blooded Women - :nono: (not to mention that starting with a cover should start alarm bells ringing)

Incidentally, I had never heard Lacuna Coil's version before.

erm, as i said somewhere in the thread i made a small error. You Made Your Bed was the Debut, Enjoy The Silence is the second single.
I've never liked anything they've done since Colour Me Dirty, which is quite good...
Incidentally, I had never heard Lacuna Coil's version before.

Well, their own stuff is pretty much similar to their interpretation of Enjoy the Silence, there's a "Best of" Lacuna Coil album out there if you want to find out more.... And, I must stress that LC did about 4 albums before doing this cover, their fifth comes out soon....
