What if some people are too depressed and suicidal to do community work, voluntary work or indeed any paid work? What if someone was forced to go to work and committed suicide as a result as they were unable to cope with it but had had their benefit stopped? Let's say the Tories get in next year and this happens. Maybe a big European Court Of Human Rights case against the UK Government may ensue. In fact it's been mentioned on mental health forums. They could be opening a big can of worms next year assuming they're elected.

Anyway people here seem to forget that depression is a recognised illness and think they're Dr's!!!

Yeah, it's an illness, but what it aint, is a cop-out or an excuse to just drop out of society..... A job or full-time education would actually give a depressed person a reason to get up in the morning, and give structure and meaning to their life..... I've seen it happen myself through my job at uni, people tell me they're doing better than they were because they've got a reason to get up in the morning....

Agreed, although, you have to bear in mind that it was these Public school/LSE-educated yahoos like Fred the Shred and Gordon Pell and the Yank "Ivy Leaguers" in Wall St who got us into this bloody mess to begin with (although, they were blinded by greed rather than stupidity)....  Mind you, by the same token, it sure as sh!t aint gonna be the barely literate chav maggots who'll get us out of it...

Actually, I seriously think that you should try and get your taxes back mate... I managed it, I just said that I was a full-time student and I only worked x amount of hours a week.. You did a p/t job, correct...? Well, check out your tax code, get in touch with HMRC and see if you can get at least some of your taxes paid back to you....

We do learn ethics in Accounting, but obviously they chose to skip that lecture :heehee:

I think i've earnt too much to claim it back.

All my tax stuff is in a folder 15,000 miles away, i will for sure do some digging when i get back to the UK in July.

Yes that's fine if thay can cope with it but what if people just can't? You can't make a generalisation which I fear the Tories will next year that anyone is fit for light work. I'm sure Scott will agree with me that there are varying degrees of depression.

So you fear the Tories will f*** you over yet you like David Cameron and can't wait until he becomes PM? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight...

The concept of irony is clearly lost on our Chris.....

Quite why he objects to Labour is beyond me, but it's probably just because his darling Sun tells him that they just aren't up to it anymore...
Once the credit crunch is over I ould completely overhaul welfare and have the whole system based on how much someone has paid into the system via tax, never paid into the system ? tough $h!t you get nothing, come here from abroad to sponge ? you get nothing, milking an illness/depression and are a career scrounger ? again get nothing or a % of what have paid into the system, then benefits for those that have paid into the system are paid out as a % of what that person has put into the system via tax

I understand your basic thought, but in reality, this sort of system is going to screw over the poor cleaner who's just been made redundant from her minimum wage job. She's hardly have going to contributed an awful lot tax-wise, but certainly should be entitled to some help.

In answer to the above post, no-one forced anyone to go to Uni did they?

OK, but where would the country be if no-one did? Certain NECESSARY vocations require a university education.

But hey, doctors, nurses, midwifes, engineers, who needs them?
