New entries are based on pre-order info/today`s sales/downloads/physicals. Last week we got 9 in the top 10, 18 in the 20, and 27 in the 30 in the combined albums. In the singles we got 9 in the top 10, 18 in the 20, 27 in the 30, 36 in the 40, and 44 in the top 50. Back in 1982, Radio Luxembourg got this: (As presented by Tony Prince, on Tues 18th May 1982) 01 04 GOODY TWO SHOES - ADAM ANT 02 01 A LITTLE PEACE - NICOLE 03 03 ONLY YOU - YAZOO 04 12 HOUSE OF FUN - MADNESS 05 18 LOOK OF LOVE - ABC 06 07 HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF - DURAN DURAN 07 08 FORGET ME NOTS - PATRICE RUSHEN 08 10 FANTASY ISLAND - TIGHT FIT 09 13 MEANING OF LOVE - DEPECHE MODE 10 16 MAMA USED TO SAY - JUNIOR 11 11 I LOVE ROCK N`ROLL - JOAN JETT AND THE BLACKHEARTS 12 06 GIRL CRAZY - HOT CHOCOLATE 13 23 ISLAND OF LOST SOULS - BLONDIE 14 25 LOVE IS ALL IS ALL RIGHT - UB40 15 NE CLUB COUNTRY - ASSOCIATES 16 05 I WON`T LET YOU DOWN - PHD 17 17 CANTONESE BOY - JAPAN 18 NE PAPERLATE - GENESIS 19 02 WE HAVE A DREAM - SCOTTISH WORLD CUP SQUAD 20 09 EBONY AND IVORY - PAUL MCCARTNEY WITH STEVIE WONDER 21 14 SHIRLEY - SHAKIN`STEVENS 22 15 THIS TIME WE`LL GET IT RIGHT/FLY THE FLAG - ENGLAND WORLD CUP SQUAD 23 20 NUMBER OF THE BEAST - IRON MAIDEN 24 21 TELEPHONE ALWAYS RINGS - FUN BOY THREE 25 24 URGENT - FOREIGNER 26 NE I`VE NEVER BEEN TO ME - CHARLENE 27 29 VIEW FROM A BRIDGE - KIM WILDE 28 28 BABY IT`S TRUE - MARI WILSON 29 NE BRAVE NEW WORLD - TOYAH 30 NE PINKY BLUE - ALTERED IMAGES Luxembourg got 24 in the 30 in 1982. Airplay good for FOREIGNER, and MARI WILSON...although both records missed the Official top 40. ADAM ANT topped the chart weeks before any other chart. It has to be said though, on those weeks when MADNESS, and ADAM ANT were #1 & #2 respectively...they actually did not have many copies seperating them. These weeks in 1982, particularly memorable for me. Doing some work at the BBC at the time, I remember Simon Bates sitting in for Tommy Vance over the 30th May/6th June, when Simon probably did the best job he ever did by sitting in for Tommy! I always think Simon was better as a stand-in presenter rather than a permanent host. His enthusiasm seemed to die, when he did the programme during 78/79/84. This becoming more apparent just recently, when I helped a student do a project on the Radio One Chart Show. I needed to decipher the best hosts. So, I sat down over a 3 month period and listened back to continuous weeks of Radio One Top 20s/40s. Covering Alan Freeman, Tom Browne, Simon Bates, Tony Blackburn, Tommy Vance, Richard Skinner, Bruno Brookes, Mark Goodier, Wes Butters, JK and Joel, and Fearne and Reggie. I listened back to the presenters on 13 shows each, when they had got into the swing of actually doing the programme. Then awarded points for their presentation, whether they be dynamic in presenting/slick, and the number of mistakes they made. Here was my result: Tom Browne finished top of the list...slick presentation/hardly any chat/minimal mistakes Alan Freeman in 2nd...maybe a bit too dynamic, but very slick, though more mistakes than Tom Mark Goodier in 3rd...pretty slick at first/but not so much during his 2nd run/hardly any mistakes/although began to get boring Bruno Brookes in 4th...not my favourite personally but pretty slick/again hardly any mistakes Tony Blackburn in 5th...very slick/enthusiastic/unfortunately increasing mistakes Simon Bates in 6th...Very slick/but grating/minimum chat/got a lot of records in 2 hours/mistakes increasing more than Tony/probably best stand-in host Richard Skinner in 7th...Again not my favourite/seemed to laugh a lot/pretty slick/not that many mistakes Wes Butters in 8th...Top 40 a bit of a mess, but not Wes`fault/could be slick/too much chat, not many mistakes though JK and Joel in 9th...Still messy presentation, maybe not their fault again/no slickness/too much chat/mistakes not bad Tommy Vance in 10th...Mistakes a-plenty/What was he talking about generally?/Messing up jingles/some slickness/pretty good at the chart rundown, ahead of the #1. Fearne and Reggie in bottom place...What are they talking about/no research/far too much chat/kiddish Maybe some people might think, how can I put JK and Joel ahead of Tommy Vance?...but after listening to 13 continuous weeks of Tommy from January - April 1983, I wanted to scream! The final couple of years of Mark Goodier were so boring, they sent me to sleep...so I would say he lost the will over time. Possibly he did the show for too long. The mistakes of Tony Blackburn knocks him back, otherwise he was pretty good, especially during 1981. Richard Skinner could have done better, but everytime he did a rundown of 40-31, 30-21, 20-11, 10-1...he seem to not be able to control his laughter. This seemed to happen over the months of Sept-Dec 1985...What was going on in the background? Simon Bates seemed to lose enthusiasm around May 1979. He was ok, during January `79 (Radio 2 also took the final hour then)...then I don`t know what happened to him. In 1984, he made far too many mistakes, and a lot of shows were recorded! Bruno Brookes seemed to be very noisy, almost shouting at times...possibly better before the new chart was unveiled on Sundays in late 1987 (in the July - Sept period). JK and Joel...how could you tell which one was which? What can you say on Fearne and Reggie, to be nice to them? Fearne...nice legs shame about the show, Reggie...why do I need a co-presenter? After listening to 143 editions of the Radio One Chart (1967-2009), enthusiasm got the better of me...and I tackled Independant Radio`s Sunday chart. Difficult to define a "best" host there. They all talk over the music/intros of records etc. Egos rather big...After 65 shows (1984-2009), I settled that David Jensen was the best permanent host, followed by the new host "Richard Clark". Lucio was rather full of himself, and Neil Fox (took the show to disappointment, on the amount of airplay included). Simon Hurst...didn`t like his accent. 13 shows of that, made me wish for Tommy Vance! By far best stand-in was Alan Freeman (1985-88). Steve Penk did a good stand in, for Neil Fox (as he rather took the micky out of certain people i.e. Michael Jackson)! Now a glutton for punishment I further decided to tackle Radio Luxembourg`s weekly chart. A difficult one because there was far too many hosts...Teddy Johnson 1948/1955 (he popped up years later in the late 80s, as a stand-in host on Radio 2, and the mistakes/presentaion was abysmal), Pete Murray 1956/1957 (another later BBC Radio host on Saturday Night`s "Pete`s Party", Keith Fordyce 1957/1958 (later Ready Steady Go host/BBC Radio host), Alan Dell 1958/9 (previous Pick Of The Pops presenter 1956-58), Barry Alldis (1960/1966), Don Wardell (1966/1967), Paul Burnett 1967/74 (future Radio One host including the Tuesday Lunchtime brand new chart), Dave Christian 1974/1975, Peter Powell 1975/1976 (future Radio One presenter, including the chart reprise on Tuesday evenings), Bob Stewart, (1977/1982) Tony Prince (1982), Dave Eastwood (1983/1984), Benny Brown (1984/1985), Jonathon King 1985/6 (Jonathon also working for the BBC on Radio One`s "A King In New York", and appearing on TOTP covering the U.S. and European Charts), Tim Smith 1986/7 (Tim replaced Paul Burnett on BBC World Service`s Top 20 in 1989), Peter Anthony (1987), Shaun Tilley (1987-91), and finally Tony Adams (in 1992). That covered the 1948-92 years, when the original Radio Luxembourg closed. I jumped through these quite quickly...Peter Anthony, & Shaun Tilley were the best I thought. Shaun Tilley did it until, the closedown of Luxembourg`s Medium Wave frequency in 1991.
May 18, 200916 yr Thanks Dave. Amazing to see where Alexander, Jade and Yohanna are - do you think they have a shot at holding or climbing during the week? Thanks for the reviews of the top 40 presenters too, interesting stuff :) Bruno Brookes was my fave, but I don't remember Tom Browne and to be honese Alan Freeman was before my time
May 18, 200916 yr Author Thanks Dave. Amazing to see where Alexander, Jade and Yohanna are - do you think they have a shot at holding or climbing during the week? Will they hold on? Well, Alexander & Jade will stick it out, but Yohanna will be out by the end of the week I should think. Quite a long time since so many Eurovision entries went into the top 40. 1974 was the best year with Abba (Waterloo), Olivia Newton John (Long Live Love), Mouth & McNeal (I See A Star), and Gigliola Cinquetti (Go Before You Break My Heart)...Very strangely in 1988 "Go" (our entry for Scott Fitzgerald) lost out by 1 point...and the lyrics could have been nicked from the Gigliola entry from 1974. May have cost Scott the Contest...

Unfortunately I can't tell who is better or worse because 1. I'm not british, so I started to listen to the show when already JK and Joel presented it 2. there are some presenters that were also before my time  but to read your summary, Dave was very interesting!

May 18, 200916 yr I hope 'Red' manages to beat 'Change''s peak! :( Or at least has a decent run! I think Red should definitely get at least #8 like Change did, but I'm hoping for a slightly better - or at least less catastrophically awful - chart run. Change started somewhat promisingly - 8-13- - then bombed 33-48-out.
May 18, 200916 yr Um, I've just noticed Jai Ho isn't in the singles at all - is that a mistake, or did it plummet?
May 18, 200916 yr Author Um, I've just noticed Jai Ho isn't in the singles at all - is that a mistake, or did it plummet? No, it`s in! I wondered why the computer was telling me, that Starpilots were not in the top 30! Unfortunately Jai Ho knocks Jade down a place. :teresa:
May 18, 200916 yr Are we likely to see any Kings Of Leon tracks back inside the top 40  Excellent retro btw, one of my favourite years
