May 22, 200916 yr Well I would say that Fairytale is much more commercial, not neccessarily better, and that does look like going top 10... so maybe you have a point. But the point in It's My Time was to win the Eurovision. It didn't quite work, but we did rather well...
May 22, 200916 yr Well I would say that Fairytale is much more commercial, not neccessarily better, and that does look like going top 10... so maybe you have a point. But the point in It's My Time was to win the Eurovision. It didn't quite work, but we did rather well... depends upon how you gauge the validity of a track.... but both the charts and the song contest are popularity contests and our effort looks like losing on both counts. as you know, i never thought we had a chance of winning, dispite its pedigree. many tracks that i rated as potential winners i didnt personally like... 'save your kisses for me' being a prime example. 'its my time' did far better in the positions then i ever expected, but in truth it failed to acheive what alw set out to do.... win... and it wasnt just beaten, it was trounced points wise . tbh i think some of you got alittle carried away with it, you like it and perhaps 'overrated' it, it looks like charting badly. maybe its a marmite track...
May 22, 200916 yr IF jade fails to chart very well.... i expect an apology of most of you lot who were insisting that it was a good record..... it ISNT. So a song has to 'chart very well' in order to be good then?!
May 23, 200916 yr So a song has to 'chart very well' in order to be good then?! in a POPULARITY contest...yes! its a popularity contest not a contest of musical quality... its not about technical ability, performance (although that is part of it), or who looks best, its simply a contest to determine which countries entry is the most popular, so by default the favourite track is the one most likely to chart well. like ive pointed out ... our winners all topped the singles chart, many of our #2's and 3#'s , also charted well and then theres the foreign winners like abba, dana, johnny logan that have charted highly if not #1s. thats the factual evidence that i can remember ever since sandie shaw won in 67! however, i wouldnt say that the track is 'good'... just popular. i mean... bob the builder topped our charts but it didnt make it a good track!
May 24, 200916 yr Really hope Alexander can hold onto his early midweek lead today - I think he will enter at #9, Jade will be around #28 and Yohanna at #48
May 24, 200916 yr like ive pointed out ... our winners all topped the singles chart, Aside from Lulu and Katrina & The Waves of course ;)
May 24, 200916 yr :cheer: Alexander new entry at #10! So pleased it managed to hang on to a Top 10 placing! First ESC winning song to make the Top 10 for 12 years [Katrina & The Waves]....Disappointing for Jade at #27 though :nocheer:
May 26, 200916 yr Who was the one eating humble pie last Saturday night? but thats the point.... i should be SHAREING it ! i only got her position wrong, but it looks like i was spot on with the rest...it IS an awful track, #27? Aside from Lulu and Katrina & The Waves of course ;) yeah i did say #2 and 3#s though, although looking at the quote it was sloppily written, when i say topped the chart i was refering to the top places. but anyway... the point stands. :)
May 27, 200916 yr interesting... since we last won, only 3 entries have charted worse then jade (andy abraham, niki french, lindsey sunmmut) , assuming there is no big rush on jade now and she wont dramatically increase sales. so all those entries we have slated, gemini, daz sampson, scooch... all have proven to be more popular tracks with the general public. daz sampson and scooch even got top ten! ffs! theres summut rather fishy about this euro-placing... 5th? with a track we dont like? yet tracks we do like (apparently) failed miserably in the contest. no wonder i predicted bottom half with this rubbish track, it dont add up. im still awaiting appology, or humble pie shareing, from those of you who insisted that 'theres something wrong with your hearing'.. now the hype has died down...i was right, the track is PANTS.
May 27, 200916 yr ^^I think Jade's success owes a lot to juries from what I've seen from their scores. Not that I dont think she picked up more votes than usual for the UK, a big ballad at the end in between loads of uptempos certainly helped. But going top10 was certainly the jury's doing.
May 27, 200916 yr im still awaiting appology, or humble pie shareing, from those of you who insisted that 'theres something wrong with your hearing'.. now the hype has died down...i was right, the track is PANTS. I don't think anyone has ever claimed the song to be very good :o All the positive comments I've seen for the UK entry have been surrounding Jade and her voice. I think I've been one of the first to admit that Jade deserved a hell of a lot better than she was given  I don't think the fact that Daz and Scooch got top 10 prove anythng about the quality of their songs, considering the company they keep in the UK Top 10. It's a well known 'fact' (i.e. my opinion) that the UK charts are full of trash. I exemplify this with the following statement from you: "the tracks we do like failed miserably in the contest". What does that tell us? That the BBC were right not to trust the Cowell-ite British public to pick another song. Better to go for a generic song which is bound to get us votes, than trust our lot to pick some 90's cheesefest to represent us on an international stage. Just because a song goes top 10 in the UK doesn't make it any bloody good ... exemplified by the last decade's results.

But going top10 was certainly the jury's doing. but then in some countries votes that have leaked, she did better in the televote than with the juries...I reckon she could have scraped into the low end of the top ten without the juries

The problem with Scooch and Daz is that they were both 'in-jokes' meaning that the UK found them hysterically funny (or at least somebody must have :heehee:) but the rest of Europe didn't get the joke

The problem with Scooch and Daz is that they were both 'in-jokes' meaning that the UK found them hysterically funny (or at least somebody must have :heehee:) but the rest of Europe didn't get the joke maybe, but we WON with daft novelty tracks that europe must have 'got'... 'puppet on a string'? 'save your kisses for me'? 'making your mind up'? perhaps im spoilt here as when i was your lots age we tended to do very well in the esc with the aforementioned daft novelty pop tracks. the contest was always about having a larf! it was silly, querky, no one took it that seriously .... which is where i reckon its gone wrong now (for us).
May 28, 200916 yr maybe, but we WON with daft novelty tracks that europe must have 'got'... 'puppet on a string'? 'save your kisses for me'? 'making your mind up'? 40 years ago...
May 28, 200916 yr 40 years ago... Yeah, the world was very different 20/30/40 years ago from what we see now. which is the point im making.... we in the esc has lost its sense of fun. id suggest that the period 67-84 was 'the golden age' of eurovision, peaking in the early/mid 70's. we might have lost the plot, but the europeans havnt, hence lordi, alex and ruslana .... perfect enough esc entries. the world may be a different place, but thats no excuse for us producing this garbage.
May 28, 200916 yr More UK chart positions Randajad - Urban Symphony (Estonia): No 117 Dum Tek Tek - Hadise (Turkey): No 127 Always - Aysel & Arash (Azerbaijan): No 137 La Voix - Malena Ernman (Sweden): No 138 Todas As Ruas Do Amor - Flor-de-Lis (Portugal): No 158 Jan Jan - Inga & Anush (Armenia): No 159 Be My Valentine (Anti-Crisis Girl) - Svetlana Loboda (Ukraine): No 167
