Global Radio director of broadcasting Richard Park is hoping to attract “comfortably” more than 2m listeners to Global’s new chart programme The Big Top 40 Show, which he says will bring entertainment back to the charts.

Park calls the new show, which replaces Hit 40 UK from Sunday, June 14, the “first ever interactive chart show for the download generation”, as it incorporates download sales from right up until the end of the programme at 7pm each Sunday.

The Big Top 40 chart, produced in partnership with iTunes but without the involvement of the Official Charts Company, is based on iTunes.co.uk sales data and the Nielsen ILR airplay list.

Global will initially compile a Top 40 using its own weighting system between Nielsen and iTunes data, with positions 11 to 40 fixed by the time the show starts.

However, the Top 10 positions will still be open to change. Hosts Rich Clarke and Kat Snoob will announce how the Top 10 stands at the start of the programme, with listeners encouraged to download these songs while listening to the show, thereby influencing the final rundown.

“A whole load of purchases could lead to a number one,” says Park, adding, “Could this be the way forward? I think it is going to be fantastic.”

Park explains that the show, which will air on more than 141 stations across the UK including the Heart and Galaxy networks, 95.8 Capital FM and the Hit Music Network, is intended to offer more in the way of entertainment than the “classic” chart rundown.

“Having followed the show [Hit 40 UK] for a number of years I thought that shows these days need to be more entertainment. For commercial radio we want to rock and roll it a bit,” Park argues. “We are hoping to push through the 2m mark comfortably.”

“It will be really exciting,” he adds. “Listeners could be responsible for putting favourite artist up to the top.”

sounds ridiculous  announcing the top ten before the chart therby completely ruining the tension for Radio 1 chart listeners...like anything would be likely to change between 4 & 7pm on a Sunday with sales as high as they are these days :heehee:

and if it's accounting for Sunday sales, what about the releases that come out on a Sunday on iTunes and have shot up to the top by Sunday night, selling enough in one day to reach the top 40? will these feature in 'The Big Top 40'

it seems very cobbled together and not thought through properly...if they think they are going to be able to influence a song up to No.1 then they are completely wrong...if an X Factor/BGT performance can only encourage a song back into the low top 75, some chart show with a 5th of the listeners than there are viewers of these shows will have no impact whatsoever on the final standings

Well I guess that's why it's called Commercial Radio... it's just one big ad for iTunes.

i think i may have said this already but i'm not sure, will the downloads on the Sunday for the top 10 count towards next week Big Top 40, if so it's double sales and won't be fair and if not they will miss out on those sales for next week which is also not fair.

I think we need to make sure no one post spoilers in the chart show thread. If they call out the top 10 in order at the start people may as well not listen to either show, i think if they just read out the Top 10 in no particular order that would save it. But i won't be listening.

“It will be really exciting,” he adds. “Listeners could be responsible for putting favourite artist up to the top.”

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but hasn't that been happening since 1952?

I spoke to someone at Independant Radio, and was basically told that they want a Chart, that is new on the Sunday. They reckon that by Sunday the Official Top 40 is already out of date i.e. the midweek stuff etc.

What I still can not grasp, is this 11-40 Airplay/Sales nonsense. Surely if they want a Chart ahead of the BBC, then they need to drop this daft Airplay? By using the iTunes top 10, they think they will be ahead...Yes, true. The stupid thing is the using of Airplay outside the top 10, means that many songs get stuck at #11 for weeks on end. Like on Hit40uk this week, Beyonce has been stuck at 11, for 3 weeks. The Airplay is so stupid that it is out of touch with the listeners anyway. If they really want to be ahead including Airplay...then falling songs in the 11-40 part, need to be weeded out somehow. What is wrong with these Radio people????

It seems like the Emap group had it right, with the Smash Hits Chart (2004-6)...but they axed it! Somehow similar to this "Big Top 40" thing, but included viewers votes via the Box/the Hits/Smash Hits TV.

Another example, Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight

#11 for countless (exaggeration) amount of weeks because it's not Top 10 in Official Download Chart. ;)

Absolutely. Just thinking too...as other download sites continue to grow, iTunes sometimes get`s the #1 wrong! Remember the week in March, when PokerFace wasn`t topping iTunes? On that occasion, "The Big Top 40" would have been behind anyway!

Incidently, I was given an example using iTunes today (this was around 3pm, if I remember). This was how the Independant Radio people said the top ten would look like at that time:

01 Dizzee/Armand

02 Black Eyed Peas

03 Agnes

04 Tinchy Stryder

05 Daniel Merriweather

06 Soulja Boy

07 La Roux

08 Lily Allen

09 Veronicas

10 Lady GaGa

Guess what #11 was? Yep, Halo! Eminem was lower than Beyonce! How could that be? Absolutely ridiculous! The Fear & Lily Allen was still in the top 30, with Kelly Clarkson "My Life Would Suck", Alesha Dixon "Breathe Slow", James Morrison "Broken Strings" still riding the top 40.

Another example, Jennifer Hudson - Spotlight

#11 for countless (exaggeration) amount of weeks because it's not Top 10 in Official Download Chart. ;)

Peaked at #4 on the Bullboard chart too

I have nothing against airplay, I think it quite accurately represents what people are are hearing, if not buying, but my problem is the mismash. Surely it should all include airplay - or none of it?

Actually, when JHud was at #11, both singles and downloads were inluded, sorry.

It was meant to say Official Top 10, not Top 10 in Official Download Chart.

This is one big ad for itunes. Download from itunes and influence the chart. What a load of crap!

Complete and utter bull$h!t from start to finish. And if Richard Parks is in anyway involved then I will not be listening. He knows even less about popular music than Cowell. Old fart!

I said that

Well, they obviously don't know what they're talking about. The Official Top 40 goes Sunday -> Saturday.

  • 2 weeks later...
They have started to advertise it on radio and on tv :o
They have started to advertise it on radio and on tv :o

And L!am, you`ve boosted up the thread and advertised it too!

There were 2 Hit40uk`s broadcasted today (both the same chart), Rich Clark did it for Capital Live from Emirites Stadium and the Summertime Ball. Matt Wilkinson did it for all other Independant Stations.

If the Big Top 40, had launched this Sunday, the top ten would have looked like this:

10 Tinchy Stryder

09 Soulja Boy

08 Keri And Co.

07 Veronicas

06 Daniel Merriweather

05 Kasabian

04 Agnes

03 Dizzee/Armand

02 Black Eyed Peas

01 Pixie Lott

Well ahead, is what they want. But the silly buggers still insist on that stupid 11-40 50/50% Airplay/iTunes Downloads...Idiots!

how would Pixie be #1 on just 2 days sales, they still count the other 7 days not just the sales during the show for the top 10 don't they?
Exactly, it's a bit unfair giving prominence of 1 days sales to that of a whole week's worth. What if (though unlikely) Pixie's downloads trailed off badly now, and a new song released on Monday sold the most to become number 1 by next Sunday. Makes a complete mockery of this chart, no?
