May 29, 200916 yr Author I wasnt thrilled with Matt, but actually I really like the look of Karen. Bigger version: http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y201/Mrflibbleisverycross/11thdoccompanion1.jpg
May 29, 200916 yr I've never heard of her, or seen her in any TV series, Dr. Who has been given the credit crunch makeover for 2010, I bet the whole series will be set on planet Earth, instead of strange planets, I'm still optimistic with the new Dr. (Matt Smith), something does not twig with me. I do think the producers just couldn't afford to use David Tennant no more, I bet he wanted more money to stay on, instead they cast for a new Dr.
May 29, 200916 yr Interesting that neither The Doctor or the companion are going to be really all that well known.
May 29, 200916 yr I know it's called Doctor Who, but having virtual unknowns for both the Doctor and his companion is taking it just a bit too far.
May 29, 200916 yr Author ^ But they couldn't overshadow Matt Smith with a famous companion. I'm not really worried about the unknowns tbh. Steve Moffat knows what he is doing! I have faith :)
May 29, 200916 yr Just remember to watch out for the next companion as another character in Series 5 :heehee:
May 29, 200916 yr I'm surprised it wasn't someone a bit more famous and I don't really like what they've done. The ages of the Doctor/companion are in complete contrast to the last series, and I thought that worked really well. I will of course tune in though!
May 29, 200916 yr I have feeling that in two years time, we'll all wonder what we did without these unknowns. We need to give them a chance.
May 29, 200916 yr Apparently Rebecca Ryan who plays Debbie in Shameless auditioned for the show and got to the final 5. I like the look of this companion though.
May 29, 200916 yr ^ But they couldn't overshadow Matt Smith with a famous companion. I'm not really worried about the unknowns tbh. Steve Moffat knows what he is doing! I have faith :) Why not? As I'm certain Scott (Grimly) will back me up..... back in 1969 when the James Bond franchise had lost Sean Connery and replaced him with relative unknown George Lazenby, they backed it up with arguably the best ever Bond Girl (Diana Rigg) & the always excellent Telly Savalas as the main baddie. As a result the film was a blockbuster hit and critically acclaimed despite the shortcomings of the main actor, whom was replaced for the next installment of the Bond franchise. The problem with Stephen Moffat is that he unquestionably a brilliant screenwriter, but his career as an executive producer is rather more chequered ... to date just Jekyll which received mediocre reviews despite critically acclaimed performances by James Nesbitt & Paterson Joseph. As critics felt the direction of the plot was frequently muddled and left something to be desired despite an obviously excellent written scripts. The public reflected that with the series viewing figures dropping off throughout the run, from 5.1 to 3.2m for its series finale. As a result the show was not recomissioned for a second series. In short Paul McCartney is a brilliant songwriter, but history has proven he is not so great as a producer. The same could be said for Stephen Moffatt.
May 29, 200916 yr Getting to the point in question... personally I think this is a brilliant appointment. Karen was brilliant in that rather ropey "The Fires of Pompeii"; whilst she was hilarious support in The Kevin Bishop Show. CMOP2VHA9BI The O.C Spoof 4dZPnme15nQ Die Hard 5, Bruce On The Loose Irlc6uqUR04 Countdown USA Spoof As for Matt Smith, having finally seen him put in a great performance in Jimmy McGovern's The Street (Series 2, Episode 4), I now know give him a good script, and he also the full range of acting abilities required to carry off the role; even though I'm yet to be convinced he has the charisma for the part.
May 30, 200916 yr She looks ... affordable  That's it in a nutshell really.... And, as Martin said, it's a "Credit Crunch" Dr Who, which is the only reason these utter nobodies are even getting a sniff at a flagship show.... Frankly, I'd rather the Beeb went into co-production with a US cable network like HBO or Showtime, someone with a bit of cash (like they did with the fantastic Tudors and Rome, and the actors they got for THOSE shows were absolutely phenomenal, people with experience, talent and good resumes, as befitting a big series....) to throw around for good, experienced actors and decent FX.... Just imagine the possibilities with someone like Ewen McGregor, Alan Rickman, Anthony Head, Julian Rhind Tutt, Jason Isaacs or Bobby Carlyle as the Doctor and someone like Lena Heady, Summer Glau (both now freed up because of Terminator SCC going tits up..), Anna Friel, Keeley Hawes, Amy Acker (Fred from Angel) or Alyson Hannigan (Willow from Buffy) to be the companion.... Sorry, but I really dont think that Dr Who, being as important as it is to British television and the BBC, should be the place for the Beeb to use its fukkin' YTS staff just because of budget cut-backs.... LAME....
May 30, 200916 yr Why not? As I'm certain Scott (Grimly) will back me up..... back in 1969 when the James Bond franchise had lost Sean Connery and replaced him with relative unknown George Lazenby, they backed it up with arguably the best ever Bond Girl (Diana Rigg) & the always excellent Telly Savalas as the main baddie. In short Paul McCartney is a brilliant songwriter, but history has proven he is not so great as a producer. The same could be said for Stephen Moffatt. First half and the closing argument I agree with... Lazenby's total shortcomings were completely masked by the greatness of Rigg and Savalas.... One WOULD think that a total lack of charsima, which was evident in Lazenby, would be pretty big handicap for someone playing Bond.... No wonder he wasn't asked to reprise the role, and they got Connery back for quite a large wodge of cash as I understand.... I really get this impression with Matt Smith to be honest, I just dont see this kid as the Doc, I'm not impressed with the things I've seen him in at all, Moses Jones was complete cr@p... This could be as big a misfire as Pete Davison replacing Tom Baker, a similar case of a young actor pretty much lost in a role much bigger than he was, and I actually liked him from All Creatures Great and Small.... I simply dont agree at all with your assessment of Jekyll... I kind of get the impression that the problem people had with that show is that it was somewhat, er, too, cerebral for the Saturday night couch potatoes who were probably more used to dreck like X-Factor or Ant and Dec rather than something which required them to actually think. I usually downloaded it rather than stay in tbh..... It was probably aired on the wrong night, the weekends are not really suited to something with an actual brain which requires a bit of thought, mid-week would've been far better, on Beeb 2 probably.... I had no probs with Jekyll because of my familiarity with the source material (ie, the 19th Century Novella) and better modern films associated with the Jekyll/Hyde mythos, such as Stephen Frears' vastly under-rated Mary Reilly, so I knew exactly where Moffatt was coming from.... So, all in all, I think Jekyll was a damn good modern update, with some good acting (the terminally useless Michelle Ryan aside) from James Nesbitt (a career best surely...), Gina Bellman, Patterson Joseph (dodgy accent aside... ), Meera Syal, and a real surprise from Dennis Lawson, whom I'd always considered a bit of a lightweight.... I think really the problem which Jekyll encountered was the "Pleb Factor" more than anything, ie, the same types of r*t**** who didn't "get" Terminator SCC, Firefly, The Dresden Files, The Lost Room or Pushing Daisies..... I have to admit, I wonder too just what the hell Moffatt the Producer is doing..... As I've stated I really just dont think that a series as important to British TV should really be entrusted to the Beeb's YTS employees..... I really just cannot help but get the feeling that the only reason Matt and Karen have been cast is because they're cheap and the beeb can no longer afford David Tenant.... I find it very telling that Tenant has been approached to star in the upcoming Dr Who film, obviously a lot more money is gonna be chucked at that one.... So, I have to wonder, if they can get together with some big company in Hollywood to do a FILM, why not get together with HBO, Sci Fi channel or Showtime (US cable companies with pretty good reps for making excellent, critically acclaimed shows such as The Sopranos, Battle Star Galactica, The Wire, Dexter, Carnivale, Generation Kill, The Corner, etc; and Rome and The Tudors in co-production with the BBC) to make Dr Who as great as it can be.... Frankly, I'm really baffled as to why Moffatt just didn't do this.....
May 30, 200916 yr ^ Just as a post-script... If paying the wages of Patterson Joseph or Anna Friel meant getting rid of, say, W/anker Woss or Chris fukkin' Moyles, then, fair swap, imo.....
