How did Lord Mandelson become the most important person in the Government? Not only has he been fired from office, not once but twice, he is not even an elected MP. He has just been given a title to allow him to sit in the cabinet.

His first death was triggered by Gordon Brown's assassination squad who took him out with the revelation of the Geoffrey Robinson home loan. Even Jesus Christ only got the one resurrection. No wonder Peter Benjamin Mandelson thought it was the end of his career in the frontline of British politics when he was dispatched from the cabinet for an unprecedented second time in New Year 2001.

 

He now has the amazing title of....Baron Mandelson of Foy in the County of Herefordshire and Hartlepool in the County of Durham, First Secretary of State, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Lord President of the Council and Grand Vizier of all he surveys.

 

I mean wtf! A few years ago Brown and Manderson hated each other with a vengeance. Now he sits there as Gordons's right hand man, but who is the monkey and who is the organ grinder ?

There is a saying, it is something like "better to have someone inside the tent p***ing out than outside the tent p***ing in"

 

I think that sums up the situation, better keeping Mandy sweet than have him on the outside causing trouble and rocking the boat, total cock he may be but he is the most able person in the Labour party, the chief architect of B-Liar's first 2 wins Brown can't afford to have him rocking the boat so is trying to keep him sweet by giving him fancy titles

 

Don't forget Maggie had Geoffrey Howe as Deputy PM even though they were on total opposite sides of the spectrum politically and we saw what happened when Maggie pissed Howe off

This is pretty much one of the main reasons why I've grown to hate Nu Labor - Mandy.... <_< The fact that Mandelson is so thoroughly corrupt but still manages to land on his feet, being so clearly protected by the Nu Labor hierarchy.... He was once called the "Minister Without Portfolio" - yeah, that's a politically correct way of saying no bugger voted for the c/unt..... :angry:

 

And we wonder why Nu Labor is getting wiped out in the polls just now.... I think it's a pretty close tie between Nick Griffin, Gordon Broon and Peter Mandelson for my personal Most Hated Figure in UK Politics.....

I don't particularly like Peter Mandelson but it has to be said that he has shown himself to be a very competent minister in his previous jobs. Given a choice between competent ministers and likeable ones, I'll take the former every time.

He was making a fortune on the Euro gravy train being a Brussels commissioner, if the EU leaders expenses were published by the Telegraph the scandals of MP's would pale into insignificance so I don't think he would have any interest in going back to being an MP again, Lord's serving in the cabinet is not unusual, Lord Young was Maggie's trade and industry secretary and his wife Baroness Young was also in the cabinet too so Mandy isn't the only one that gets into the cabinet via the Lords

Aitken and Archer were guilty of attempting (and in Archer's case succeeding) to gain substantial sums of money by lying in court. If Aitken had won it could have destroyed the Guardian. I would consider that to be worse than omitting relevant details from a mortgage application form.

I don't actually have any problem with having a few unelected ministers. However, I don't like the fact that, under the present system, that can only be achieved by making someone a permanent member of the legislature.

 

A government with a small majority may have, say, 330-340 MPs. Of those, some will be new MPs and so not really ready to be a minister. If the Tories win the next election with a small majority, the number of new MPs will be around 130-140, a substantial proportion of the total. Of the rest, some will not have any ministerial ambitions, others will be past it and others will simply not be up to it. So that leaves a relatively small pool of "talent" from which to appoint 100+ ministers. After all, many of the qualities required to be a good MP are very different from the qualities required in a good minister.

 

I don't want us to go for the American system where none of the equivalent of ministers are elected representatives. Even if they are an elected representative at the time of the appointment, they have to give that up.

 

As for an elected second chamber, yes I support that although I think there is some merit in having a small proportion of that chamber (a maximum of 20%) chosen by appointment. Any appointed members would only serve for a limited time and would be appointed for their expertise in a given area. Having said that, if the choice was between a wholly elected chamber and the status quo, I would obviously go for the wholly elected option.
