Posted June 20, 200916 yr Very blog-hyped South African born artist whose teamed up with Switch (MIA & Santigold). Debut single, "Box N Locks" samples a bit of Martha and the Muffins's "Echo Beach" and here is it's video: aDfLBY6PJrQ Will be physically released in the UK and Europe on July 20th. She seems like 2009's Santigold, although she reminds me a lot of Santigold AND Jamelia, I think she's STUNNING and original. Her stuff is pretty genre-defying and am so glad she's South African born etc. Wubwubwub i'm officialzy a MPHOloon now. :heehee: Edited July 18, 200916 yr by Mwa Kath Mwa
June 20, 200916 yr Author And just by the way you pronounce her name 'M-paw' and just noticed this is on Radio 1's Upfront list so this could be quite the hit. YAY.
June 20, 200916 yr I've seen people getting hyped up about this then opened this thread to watch the video and in about 10 seconds I fell in love with it :P
June 20, 200916 yr it's an incredibly good song, but I love the song it's based on too (Echo Beach) I really like what she's done with it :D
June 20, 200916 yr Not that i dislike the song, i really like it, but Santogold is the MUCH more original and amazing artist.
June 21, 200916 yr Well, I have a few problems with this. Firstly, the lyrics: What's she trying to say? That black girls are automatically presumed to be making "urban" music? Well there's plenty of black girls out there making music just like this - like someone already mentioned, Jamelia for one! The line that gets me the most is the bit about "bet you didn't think that I could do this too" like we're all that racist. Anyway, Remi Nicole already did this on Rock N Roll and at least she kinda had an excuse because she was making "rock" music (I'm using that term very loosely). Secondly, the Echo Beach sample is just a bit too prominent - if it wasn't relied on so heavily the song would be better but I just get the impression the song would be absolutely nothing without it. Saying all this, I think she has a lot of potential. I like her voice and I think if her other songs don't rely on samples like this then they'll sound pretty good. So I'll get over my quarms and just enjoy the song, because it's not actually that bad.

There's this remix that changes it's sound completely and I think it's still good: oeaSC5d8B6I I don't know if it uses a sample, but I quite liked "Hips Go Pop" by her. 8EACf0AMhEQ The vocals on the chorus could do with a brush up (this is probably an unfinished version) but I think it's promising. Quite looking forward to the album.
June 21, 200916 yr Why have they ripped off the 'Poker Face' video so much on this? Seriously, that part with the circular screen behind her... even the hair style is similar, except this girl has it tied back. It's not a bad song though.
June 22, 200916 yr Personally I think it is pretty uninspired stuff. If you are going to sample Echo Beach you might as well cover it like Gabrielle Cilmi did to great effect last year.
June 23, 200916 yr She's nothing like Santigold in terms of talent / originality. It looks like she's going for that sound (same producer as Santigold - sameish sound as her) but she's just not as good. If the public didn't warm to Santi last year I don't think they'll warm to this girl either. Edited June 23, 200916 yr by Jonny

I don't see how a cover is any less uninspired than using a sample. I think the song stands up well on the Sermstyle remix. (which basically removes the sample and adds a new backing track)
July 18, 200916 yr Album cover? Well, it's colourful. Anyway, this is an amazing track, can't wait to get it on Monday
July 18, 200916 yr Author ^ The official single cover actually. :o Seems the far superior previous covers were fanmade. There's literally nothing leaked about her album yet other than the title and that this is the lead single. Pity though, I'm dying to hear with what else she comes up with cause this song is just beyond amaze. <3
July 18, 200916 yr Yeah, the album should be fantastic. I don't think this single cover is anything to write home about, but the music within is amazing
