Diana Vickers wins West End role

Diana Vickers is to star in the West End revival of musical comedy The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice.

The 18-year-old X Factor runner-up has been cast in the role that made Jane Horrocks famous, playing a shy, lonely girl called Laura who has an impressive voice and can impersonate singers like Edith Piaf and Shirley Bassey.

Jane, 45, wowed in the role on stage in 1992 and took the show to the big screen in the 1998 hit movie version Little Voice, co-starring Sir Michael Caine.

Diana will begin rehearsing next month, and the show - by playwright Jim Cartwright - is due to start later in the autumn.

Producer Nica Burns said today: ”There was no question of reviving this fabulous play in the West End until we had found our Little Voice. When Jim Cartwright, who originally wrote The Rise and Fall of Little Voice for Jane Horrocks, told me he had found the perfect girl - and then dragged me off to Wembley to see Diana Vickers perform as part of the “X Factor” tour, I thought he’d gone mad! But when I saw Diana I knew immediately he was right; she has a special quality.

When she finally agreed - after much persuasion - to come in and read for us, we found out that not only can she sing but she was an intuitive actress as well.”

Playwright Jim Cartwright said: “This young girl is a natural actress. The moment she read the part, it was magic. A frisson ran through the room. Diana Vickers is the real deal. She is Little Voice.”

Nica added: ”We are extremely grateful to Diana’s record company for allowing her a break from recording her debut album to take on this exciting role in the West End. I know it wasn’t part of her career plan after the “X Factor”, but we are delighted she agreed to do it - even if it meant wearing my knees out begging her

I like it, but she is overdoing her "different" style of singing. She should just sing. Solid song though.

It's a pleasant enough listen, and I'm glad we haven't got another typical pop ballad blandie from the X Factor to deal with.

But yes, this isn't a strong enough tune for a debut single.

The two Nerina Pallot demos (on Nerina's Myspace currently) submitted for "The Claw's" forthcoming album, are better than this track IMHO.

Hmm, sounds to me that if the album is a success it'll be down more to Nerina Pallot and one or two others than Diana Vickers herself......

It's, umm, OK. I don't mean to be nasty, but it's what I expected. She'll release an album, shall chart #17ish and then she'll fade in obscurity. I don't want it to happen, and I'd love to be proved wrong, but...
I doubt anyone would want it, but I've got a HQ link for this ready and waiting B)
ME PLEASE! :D

I still really like it, although I do have to agree with the people that said it's not lead single material...
