I'm glad the fake version of 'Outta Here' is doing okay-ish, hopefully when the original is released it can go Top 10.

So despite John Barrowman being inside the top 10 at midnight last night after only selling for approx 18 hours, it made just #30 in the first set of midweeks. Surely an indicator that iTunes IS based over 24 hours and not 48 or more?!

I think the progress of the Arctic Monkeys' Crying Lightning proves otherwise.

It was released at midnight on Tues 07/07 (00:00 Hrs) but peaked on iTunes very late on Wednesday 8th evening at #3, strongly suggesting iTunes is based over a 48 Hour period as surely most fanatical Arctic Monkeys fans would have purchased it off iTunes on Tuesday, the first day it was available.

Likewise in the midweeks it's first appearance was at #18, as it was catching up on lost ground.

John Barrowman's track as sold nowhere near that amount, so taking into account it sold next to zero sales on Sunday it has done pretty good to enter at #30. Hence, I would expect it to be just outside the Top 20 on tomorrow's update, and if the hype continues I'd expect it to be around the ballpark #15 by Sunday as its sales will surely drop off on Saturday.

I get where you're coming from TiP, but Mr Hudson being #28 on last Tuesdays mids kind of proves RFC's point...

That was a database error. 99.9% certain of that.

I actually thought the sales should have been 20,900, not 2,900 for Mr Hudson last Tuesday.

Regarding the current chart, JB had no sales on Sunday and only reached the top 10 on Monday with no physical release or other versions of the track being available. Number 30 sounds right to me and I would expect the popularity to fall away by the end of the week resulting in a position of around 15 to 20.

But by saying iTunes is a 48 hour chart thenJohn Barrowman being top 10 by the end of Monday would've meant he'd sold more copies on Monday alone than the song at #11 did on Sunday and Monday put together, so how come its midweek position is 20 places lower?!

If iTunes is 24 hour rolling then by Monday night it would've been number 10 on just Mondays sales. Add the next to zero sales that on Sunday but the same again for most other songs within the top 40 and it would drop by a considerable amount, somewhere in the region of 15-20 places, which is where he appears.....

why doesn't someone just e-mail itunes to find out?

then all this talk would just go away.

Why does it disturb you that some people have decent arguments?

I wouldn't despair yet, it only used to be updated 2-3 times a day

If anyones interested Britneys Radar has officially been released as a single on ITUNES.

There are some fantastic remixes!! I seriously recommend the Bloodshy and Avant one...best remixes in years for britters.

YES! GO Hudson! :cheer: Take back that number 2 spot :D! Hopefully JLS will have a Pixie Lott sorta run now :kink:

Simple:

1. iTunes is not the only download music service available.

2. Chris Moyles promoted through iTunes on his Radio show as that is the one that updates most regularly, and has the most significant UK market share (c.70% of the market). For example on Amazon it is only currently #22.

3. On iTunes and most music sites I Made It Through The Rain is only available in one format, as an album track on his 2008 Music Music Music album, so it has probably sold less copies than a number of tracks on Itunes close to it on the chart like When Love Takes Over, Paparazzi, Boom Boom Pow, Battlefield, etc including versions that are not in the Top 100 so cannot be included in the combined comparison.

4. A recent market survey showed that the biggest day of the week for download sales is Sunday, hence selling zero on a Sunday, put the song at a pretty big disadvantage to start off with. That is why in the midweek Top 40 for Tuesday that is why Sean Kingston is at #40 despite being currently #22 on itunes; whilst the likes of Eminem - Beautiful; Flo Rida ft Nelly F - Jump; Little Boots - Remedy; an P!nk - Funhouse are not in the midweek Top 40 even though they are in the iTunes Top 40, Because they are playing catch up, but unlike John Barrowman they have had a running start with some sales on Sunday even though they were not of significant quantities to make the aggregate Top 40 at the moment.

5. Take Sales Week ending 05/07/09 - For the sales available The #10 song sold just under 21.5K. Yet sales for the #32 song were 11.7K so less than 10K separated the #10 and #32 song. Hence the #10 song sold less than double the #32 song. When you account for Sunday always having significantly bigger sales day for downloads than Mondays (circa by 20-25%) and knowing that John Barrowman's track was not selling until Chris Moyles hyped it on Monday morning then it is very easy to see why it was only #30 in the first set of midweeks.

Example:

Record A: Sunday: Ave #30 + Monday: Ave #30

Record B: Sunday: Nowhere + Monday: Ave #10

Using the extrapolation above

#10 21.5 / 7 = 3.07K

#30 11.7 / 7 = 1.67K

So if you account for the greater sales on Sunday at as an example 1.275

Then:

Record A Sales: (1.67*1.225) 2.046 + 1.67 = 3.716

Record B Sales: 0 + 3.07 = 3.07

6. On today's show they asked how long it takes for the iTunes chart to update, and the consensus of the texters said its chart is a rolling 48 Hours (thanks to Chris Moyles.net forum for that info - as I have that show as my alarm at 06:35 Hrs, as I hate that "Good Morning On The Chris Moyles Show" cheesy intro it gives me a great incentive to wake me up and get up and at the very least change the dial on my midi hifi.)
