For starters Pete Waterman actually made some good records pre SAW as part of the Loose Ends production company with fellow producer Peter Collins (Susan Cadogan - Hurts So Good; Alvin Stardust - Pretend; Belle Stars - Sign Of The Times; Tracey Ullman - Breakaway; They Don't Know; Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie; Tight Fit - The Lion Sleeps Tonight; Fantasy Island; Nik Kershaw - Wouldn't It Be Good; I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me); and he also advised and assisted The Specials to set up their independent Two Tone record label.

 

Secondly, he never came up with a TV talent show that has best been described by Sir Paul McCartney as "musical cancer" (Very strong words considering what happened to the love of his life). Which a number of highly credible artists/songwriters refuse to have their music covered on the show (McCartney post Beatles; David Bowie; Bob Dylan; Brian Wilson; Ray Davies; Pete Townsend; Paul Weller; Kate Bush; Pet Shop Boys; Morrissey/Marr; etc)

This has since been corroborated by former Smash Hits and Heat magazine chief editor Mark Frith in his autobiography "The Celeb Diaries")

 

Susanne Manning whom Pete called "bloody marvellous" yet Simon Cowell branded "awkward" topped the early public votes before tabloid stories emerged of her branding fellow contestant and (Simon's favourite) overall winner Michelle McManus a "fat cow". Susanne denied the claims vigorously, and the according to Pete's paperback edition of his autobiography "I Wish I Was Me" he, and fellow judges Nicki Chapman & Neil "Doctor" Fox suspected that it was a story leaked by Pop Idol PR (Max Clifford) to boost ratings and enhance the chances for Michelle to win the contest. And it worked as Susanne lost a massive chunk of her fan support and was voted off in 5th place.

 

As a result Pop Idol was over as a series as Pete fell out with Simon over his manipulations; so Simon Cowell came up with the even more blatantly manipulated show The X-Factor with an even greater reliance on sob stories which the UK tabloids and brain dead zombie public have fallen for.

 

Hence the judging panel consist of two other judges represented by Max Clifford (Louis Walsh & former racial assaulter of a toilet attendent Cheryl Cole). Whilst two of the winners of the series Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke have been regarded as ringers. Especially Alexandra who's godmother was Sinitta (her mum former Soul II Soul vocalist Melissa Bell was friends with Simon Cowell's former lover Sinitta as they both appeared in the musical Tahiti together, and often met up on the promo pop circuit late 1980s/early 1990s; and was part of the London Community Gospel Choir whom performed backing vocals on stage in the 2007 X-Factor finale when Leon Jackson won; and performed at festivals like Glastonbury where their set included the Leonard Cohen standard "Hallelujah".

 

Add to that Pete Waterman actively supporting Peter Kay's Geraldine McQueen spoof; which further angered Simon Cowell (I look forward to the final part of the trilogy this autumn on Channel 4 with Geraldine suffering from the down side of Reality TV fame and the strongly rumoured charity single featuring other former Pop Reality singers), and in the scheme of things Pete Waterman is a lightweight in terms of damage caused to the British music industry compared to Simon Cowell who has already ruined the charts in the last quarter of the year for far longer than Stock Aitken & Waterman managed in their heyday.

Let's not kid around; they're both twats. Cowell only gets away with it because of his cool and calm demeanour, whereas Pete Waterman lost it by appearing to have a mental breakdown at McManus' victory.

At least we know Cowell isn't totally infallible; Gates over Young, seriously?
