For the last however many weeks, we have had a different number 1 single each week. What is the record for different number one's in each year? How many are we upto this year and do you think we might break the record? I reckon Madonna will be no1 next week and there are some big releases coming up in October which could be further 1 weekers.

I really hate 1 week number 1s, it makes getting a #1 become devalued as record companies play music chairs with release dates - ultimately in 2000 - getting a #1 meant pretty much nothing. Even "Bag It Up" :manson: made it.

Without counting Alexandra Burke we are on Record 21 at #1, that's if Pixie goes to #1

The record is 42 in year 2000

So no the record won't be beaten, as Leona will probably get 2-3 weeks down the line.

On top of that I hate weekly turnovers

Tbh I think that was a great time for music - 2/3 of those number one's I don't begrudge at all. But I'm glad that we won't break the record this year.

It was a great time for music I agree. I'm not saying every number 1 should spend more than a week at the top, but to have 42 number 1s in one year was just taking the p***.

Lily Allen holds the record for most weeks at #1 this year, total 4 weeks, no other act has had 4 weeks or more.

Well I'm unsure why this pattern of 'one weekers' has returned after the very long runs at #1 last year.

So many of the tracks this year have been undeserving no1s.

I'm glad the record won't be broken though.

The reason for it is record companies have started using the same techniques used in the physical era:

* Holding back digital release to build up demand = maximise first week sales.

* Moving release dates around to avoid competition, giving both acts that were competing 1 week each at the top.

* Holding back album release until 2 singles have been released to give both a chance at the top spot, and prevent the second single losing sales from cherrypicking.

I have to say, I think singles should be released to download as soon as they are sent to radio, having a song on the radio but not being able to download is absolutely disgusting behavior from record companies - how can they expect consumers to resist illegally downloading it? I'm sorry but it's much easier to release a song digitally than physically and this really annoys me sometimes!

Of course, nowadays songs don't usually vanish rapidly after a single week at the top, as they did in 2000.

Because people know they don't have to buy a song immediately to get a price discount, or to avoid missing out because supplies have run dry, I can't see sales ever getting as front-loaded as they were in the 90's & early 00's. With that being the case, I can't see a return to a situation where instant #1's are inevitable, since album-track downloads can force a popular song to chart early regardless of record compamy wishes. Also, opportunistic covers have sometimes forced their hand, too.

all of this

plus raising the price of most downloads from 79p to 99p on the second week as they used to do with CD's from £2.99 to £3.99

Can't say I've noticed that, but if it's an iTunes-only thing then I wouldn't. In any case, a 20p rise is far less likely to deter people than a £1 rise.

Also, there are no shortage of alternative sites.

I nearly always buy downloads on the first week of release and from iTunes and many of them definitely rise by 20p after the first week...hardly a groundbreaking difference, but mentally to me it is as I begrudge paying 99p for a single song that Amazon could very well be selling for 29p

I have to say i disagree with some of the comments on here and that i prefer the fact that record companies are holding digital release to maximise the demnad for the track because it is giving big first week sales which is helping the overall effect on the chart and gradually we are seeing more new entries in the chart, I always found it boring letting a track then then watching it climb over a long period.

What I do think is outrageous is itunes increasing the price of some downloads to 99p when if im going to pay that price i would rather own a CD but that might just be me!!!!

IMO, it's quite more interesting too see songs climb their way to #1 or lower. I was thrilled about the likes of 'Poker Face' and 'Paparazzi' to see where will they peak. And for me, sales are often more important than chart positions.

You make a great point about record companies now using their nefarious sales tactics on the digital market. Ever since the mid-90s they've got worse and worse.

Very interesting point, particularly in comparison to the US market - and a case in hand - Leona's "Happy" is going to American Radio 21st September and iTunes 15th September, so basically an almost simultaneous radio/digital release - whereas in the UK, its already getting radio play and isn't released until 8th/9th November! ;)

I agree, although 1 wk No.1s constantly makes the chart (and the position of No.1) abit redundent. I would rather see a record chart at No.1 on sales of 80k+ then one that sails up the top 10 over a period of months and ends up getting to No.1 on a poor week with sales of 30K (songs like Neyo - Closer & Coldplay last year come to mind)

I'm not too keen on having a different Number 1 each week and I prefer songs having a chance to climb to the top. However I do think that the high turnover helps to keep sales up, and there's nothing worse than seeing a song lingering at the top for ages just because the market is weak - like when Umbrella was doing around 25K per week at Number 1 in the last few weeks of its reign.
I personally like the one-week #1s - it gives us a better variety or something to that effect.
