September 10, 200915 yr 2000 had a lot of one-weekers, but Bob The Builder got 3 weeks :heehee: I don't mind one-weekers if they are good. "Umbrella" was at #1 for ages and I HATED it, and I am very glad "Sexy Bitch" and "Holiday" have only had a week each at #1 this year, as I think even that is too much.
September 10, 200915 yr As a chart fan with experience going back to the 1970s I have to say that I am not keen on a return to one-week number ones and singles that peak in the first chart week. Part of the excitement was in watching them go up, and perhaps making an unexpected upward movement just when you thought they'd peaked. The early 1990s were so much better than the later 1990s in my opinion, with classic climbs to the top by the likes of Rhythm Is A Dancer, The End Of The Road and Think Twice. Multiple runs of instant number ones made the chart dull due to its predictability. It was often obvious what would be number one weeks ahead of the event. At least the late 1990s had How Do I live by Leann Rimes with its bizarre meanderings. Otherwise too many singles got to number one because of their fanbase without having qualities that could attract the casual buyer. Downloading improved the charts no end for a time, but for me it's getting predictable again.

I'm not so sure that any real shift has happened. Early this year we had the two Lady G songs & Lily's, that managed 10 weeks at #1 between them, but since then, IMO there hasn't been anything that's *deserved* an extended run it the top.
September 11, 200915 yr ^What about "I Gotta Feeling" - that should have had a 3 week stay at the top at least, but clever marketing got 1 week at the top for a record which has subsequently fallen to 8 and has never again been higher than the Black Eyed Peas single. The argument about delaying release to give higher sales simply doesn't stack up - "Poker Face" was available to download before it's first play on the radio and had average sales whilst at number 1, but is easily the biggest selling single of the year so far... If the song is good enough and deserving, it will get to #1 eventually (in an unbiased market where singles are not held back).
September 11, 200915 yr No it won't i dunno how many there's been this year i think like 20 something but as it's 3 months away till the end of year/decade it will not beat 2000's streak :D

That's a fair point, but in the (fairly distant?) past some of those records would have had longer at the top and kept some of the others off.
