Earlier this week, band-member Remi was overheard telling a pal at the Electric Cinema, in West London, that the band would be, er, virtually over by the end of the year.

The animated group's action plan is to pursue solo projects, with Damon Albarn - the "frontman" of the platinum-selling act - also releasing an album on his own.

"Gorillaz will split by the end of the year," said Remi, the voice actor for cartoon Russel.

"We'll wind down in September and by Christmas there will be a break.

"The band is made up of a lot of musicians and it needs a lot of work.

"Many of them, like me, are always doing other projects.

"Doing the American dates, when we are all in each other's pockets, can also take it out of you.

"And as much as we all get on, afterwards they're the last people you want to see."

Even so, Remi isn't ruling out a Gorillaz reunion - including a tour in 2008.

"We'll split and then maybe reunite in two years to do some new stuff.

"But really, we want to work on our own projects."

A spokesperson for the band said: "A comeback sounds reasonably accurate."

Well, they wouldn't Dare disappear altogether, would they?

Well I'm guessing its From Victoria Newton so I wouldn't belive it, but it took four years for the econf album to come out after the first one, but the question I ask is why would they have Noodle supposivley die if they wern't gonna bring out another video or something like that.

Its a stupid claim for this 'Remi' to make really. I think what he means is they're going away for a while to have a rest and work on a new album, like every other artist

Hmmm, yes the stupid Newton Cow dosent have a clue!

I will check who it was -_-

Its all just paper talk. Of course there will be a break and Damon's got the new Blur album to do as well. The writer of the article will have twisted the guy's words and added a bit more stuff into the story to look as if he has a big scoop, when rumors like these just get people worked up.
Im sure I read that they were doing another album in a year or two. I hope thats right!

I agree, like I said Gorillaz are bound to take a break what with Damon's solo stuff and the final single of 'Demon Days' about to be released.

Damon Albarn set to split Gorillaz

The star breaks the news during band's New York residency

The future of Gorillaz has been thrown into doubt after Damon Albarn admitted 2005's 'Demon Days' is "probably the last album we make".

The star was speaking after the fourth show of the cartoon outfit's five-night New York Harlem Apollo residency last night (April 5).

Albarn told BBC 6 Music that although he was happy with the way things were going within the group, he thinks they've maybe taken the concept as far as it can go.

He admitted: "At the moment we're like, that's probably the last album we make, I don't think we could make a better album than 'Demon Days' really, for what this is and how it works."

However, he left a door open by adding: "Last night we thought 'Surely this isn't the end', and I don't know we're saying it's the end again, but it's quite a hip-hop thing to retire and come back you know."

The issue has been clouded even further by the revelation earlier this week by Blur bass player Alex James that the band have reconvened recently to make new music, their first since the release of the 2003 LP 'Think Tank'.

The grand finale of Gorillaz' NYC residency takes place tonight (April 6). As was the case during their Manchester Opera House residency in late 2005, guests De La Soul, Ike Turner, Neneh Cherry, Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva and Martina Topley-Bird all joined the band to perform 'Demon Days' in full.

However, last night actor Dennis Hopper joined the band on stage to perform vocals on 'Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head' live for the first time.

See this week's NME to see Peter Robinson take on Gorillaz' Murdoc. It's on sale at all good newsagents now.

Gorillaz in Vegas?

(Tuesday April 11, 2006 06:01 PM)

Gorillaz are planning to split after a series of shows in Las Vegas, Damon Albarn has suggested.

The mastermind behind the animated hip hop supergroup said last week that the band were considering breaking-up after their concerts in New York.

The dates, at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem, saw them appear with a full compliment of guest stars for only the second time, following 2005's shows in Manchester.

However, Albarn has now backtracked on talk of retirement, despite aligning Gorillaz with the hip hop tradition that currently sees Jay Z on an extended sabbatical

Speaking to MTV after their five dates in the US, Albarn commented: "We're putting Gorillaz back on the shelf after these last few gigs and working on other things for a while.

"It's been brilliant, and this time it's been a runaway success, so why not just leave it like that? So we're retiring. We've been taking notes and we're going to do it hip-hop style, like Jay-Z."

However Albarn went on to admit that there are plans for a Gorillaz revue in Vegas. He explained: "There's a possibility of doing these shows one more time, in Las Vegas. But we're not sure when.

"I love the idea of Gorillaz - on their third-ever (set of gigs) - playing Vegas. And, of course, it'll be big and all bells and whistles. And then that's it."
