It's just gone up on ceefax--- Too much to type, but from this sunday the Hit 40UK radio chart show, that broadcasts on more than 130 commercial radio stations, will only reflect downloads to reflect the future of music buying, with 96% of singles sales coming from downloads!!

Well if they're finally ditching airplay thank god!

Airplay is a pathetic notion for compiling any chart [cough USA].

Hmmm, interesting. I wonder how much difference this will make? Also I presume that airplay will still be in it?

This has been in the pipeline, for a long long time. People have really knocked the show because the chart is so slow, and the airplay is far too much. This will mean Radio One will have to pull there socks up, and I anticipate the end for those 2 twits that present it!

Airplay will still be included but there will be a big difference to the Chart.

I`m wondering Tom, if you are about...with the airplay data, combined with the iTunes chart...you might be able to give a taster, of Sunday?

I suppose it's forever the Billboard.

But the prob is OCC publish a download chart, so how?

Top 10 same as Radio 1? Downloads 1-40 (excluding who are in Top 10) will be at 11-40?

I could Dave, but not until late on tonight. Anyway the iTunes chart changes so much, it's hard to say when is an appropriate cut off point, and the clear leader at the moment (Gaga) is doing quite badly on airplay. I'll do it but don't think it'll show much to be honest.

I can see OCC will be changing its policy from September for the chart to be a download only, the physical is virtuely dying, this time next year it be gone forever me thinks.

Why? Singles chart ain't a Download Chart...

Why? Singles chart ain't a Download Chart...

Yes, but the number of actual CD Singles sold is basically hardly anything...in which case if you look at the Download chart from last weekend, it look`s pretty much like the Normal chart, anyway. So when you look at it that way, it won`t alter Hit40uk, that much...when the airplay is put in.

It'll only really affect the X-Factor and charity singles and those artists who rely on a big physical bump for chart success - Oasis, Girls Aloud etc

So hit40 will change policy again when OCC Chart turns Digital.

No, because the Hit40 team are making the change, before anyone else. All it will do is effect those certain people that rely on a physical CD boost...So, the likes of Boyzone, Westlife, Geraldine, and even Kylie will have problems, not to mention Status Quo!

So the top 10 of the singles and albums chart will remain the same as the official chart, but the rest from 11 onwards will be the same as usual on the Hit40 chart.

It be interesting to compare with the official chart come Sunday.

Also I do wonder if Radio 1 will lose their contract not to transmit the official chart, and give it to another radio station, but I bet it will never happen.

physical sales are still about 4% to 5% of the market, which is still a large amount. And for a few singles the % is a lot, lot higher.

Hit40UK plans to ditch CD sales from its chart in favour of a digital-sales only rundown.

The chart show, with over 1.9 million listeners, had produced the chart with a mix of record sales, airplay and downloads. But with 96% of sales in the UK’s official chart now coming from downloads alone, the decision has been taken to reflect the future of purchasing music.

The networked Top 40 chart show is hosted by Lucio Buffone and broadcasts on over 130 UK commercial radio stations every Sunday from 4-7pm.

Paul Jackson, group programme director, 95.8 Capital FM, The Hit Music Network, The Xfm Network and Hit40UK says downloads have now become the driving force for record sales. He adds, “It makes complete sense that the UK’s most listened to chart show reflects the changes in how people are listening to music.”

Martin Talbot, Official Charts Company managing director adds, “The Hit40UK chart has always been at the heart of the UK’s music trends, reflecting radio listening and music buying for over 15 years.”

^^ In that case the top 10 will definitely look different from the official chart, by dropping all physical content

Having the same top 10 has always made the entire chart pointless but I doubt they are likely to change it

So it will still include airplay?

No I think airplay's not incl.

Then how come over 1m vinyl singles were sold last year, nearly 20 years after they were supposed to have died?

In any case, while physical sales are only a small component of the whole singles market (maybe less than 5%), for certain acts they are far more important. Indie rock still sells well physically, as do older acts in general - also charity & talent show recordsstill sell well physically.

In short, while physical singles may be marginalised, they are not dead, and will not be for quite a while to come...

BUt at least Westlife & Kylie can rely on airplay...
