  1. Aww this one should be higher! This appeared on the first Doctor Who DVD I owned along with the following two episodes and I watched it so many times, so there is a lot of nostalgia there for me but I do think it genuinely is a great episode. There is so much action and suspense and it is supported by a fantastic soundtrack - the scene with werewolf transforming and Rose encouraging everyone to break the chains is a solid example of this. David Tennant's portrayal of the Doctor here is so fresh, exciting and fun; there's a sort of innocence to it. I suppose it's a contrast to the more serious portrayal of Christopher Eccleston's Doctor and Tennant's Doctor was yet to experience the hurt of losing Rose which was always there in context in Series 3 and 4. Much like Simon Callow in The Unquiet Dead, I completely buy Pauline Collins as Queen Victoria. Love the running gag of Rose attempting and finally succeeding in getting her to say "I am not amused"!
  2. Agreed with your thoughts here! I really like the failed companion angle and the Doctor's response is interesting to consider when going into the following episode where it's Rose that 'abuses' her position. I think everything that happens below Floor 500 is really intriguing; when the action moves upstairs, it loses me slightly. I actually found The Editor a bit annoying and what exactly was the purpose of the Jagrafess controlling people's lives by manipulating the news? Is that addressed? I might have to go back and watch. Regardless, the episode ends on a high with Adam's mum's hilarious reaction to his head-chip! Also fun to see Anna-Maxwell Martin quite early in her career.
  3. This would probably be my last place for Series 1 as well, either this or The End of the World. Not that there’s anything wrong with either of them - as you say, the standard for Series 1 is so high - but I always find the Slitheen two-parter is where the action and the depth really sets in. Love all the moments of Rose coming to terms with actually travelling to the past - small things like placing her foot in the snow and seeing her footprint conveys so much. I too really like Simon Callow’s portrayal of Charles Darwin, I fully accept that it’s really him.
  4. The fact one of the dates lands on my birthday does make this quite tempting. I’ve got a friend that really wants to go as well. I just know it’ll be a bloodbath though and extortionate with train and accommodation to think about!
  5. I like 42 a lot; yes it shares many similarities with The Impossible Planet/The Satin Pit but I think it fully stands up on its own. I dare say the stakes feel higher on 42, helped a lot by the intensity brought by being one episode instead of two and the claustrophobic, sweaty feel. What it does lack is the time to get to know all the characters so you don’t particularly care when they get killed off, which is something TIP/TSP really excels in. Martha and Riley in the pod and and Martha’s phone call to her mum do make for some great character moments and finding out someone was monitoring the call is very intriguing. The pub quiz questions to open each door are very entertaining as well as adding to the stakes as you’re willing them to get them right. Also plus points for Michelle Collins in this episode who I’m a big fan of. Nice to catch up on the ongoings of Cindy whilst she was playing dead!
  6. Yes absolutely agree with the last paragraph - those episodes are excellent! Makes you wonder if Fear Her aired earlier in the series if it would have been better received? I get that they needed another Doctor/Rose adventure before the finale though, going from an episode they barely appear in to a two-parter that sees the end of their relationship wouldn’t have the same impact.
  7. It already has a Silver certification from 1990 so will have to wait until it sells 400k post 1994 when it will be certified Gold.
  8. I enjoy Fear Her but can see why it’s considered one of the weaker episodes of RTD era. There’s something about it’s placing between a Doctor-lite episode and the big two part series finale that gives it a filler/forgettable vibe, can’t quite explain why that is but yeah, I do tend to overlook it when thinking back on the episodes. This was also a last minute episode after the Stephen Fry-penned episode was pulled. The Doctor/Rose chemistry and the fun they have together is a highlight for me- love the scene in the kitchen when the Doctor dips his fingers into a jar of marmite(?) - and the Chloe/Trish relationship feels very real. There’s some quite sinister tones with the missing children aspect and the backstory of Chloe’s dad being abusive, the latter of which really drives the story. Not sure why this episode was said to be specifically aimed for children because I find the drawing of dad in the wardrobe coming to life quite terrifying!
  9. Magnetic Electric is on Spotify!
  10. I’ve only watched 2005-2009 so will comment when that era pops up! I wouldn’t put Love and Monsters as my least favourite but nothing comes to mind as what that would be - I enjoy them all! This was a fun episode, I enjoyed the different perspective and I absolutely love Jackie/Camille; she can make you cry and make you laugh in equal measure and this was her moment to shine.
  11. It's 25 years since the UK release of 'Music'! Share your thoughts and memories below!
  12. Just remembered this gem from 2015:
  13. Love both but 'Secret' edges it for me, so voting for 'Take a Bow'.
