Oh yes Hot Right Now is a good 'un, proper dance banger. Consulting with my younger self, I need to smack myself virtually in 2012 for only charting it at 68 where Louder had gone top 5 in 2011. It's def better than that and it has weathered well, top 20 o the year for sure. Maybe I'd gotten a bit OD'd on Rita Ora.....

Elton highly flattered by that one-off global moment, more of a cultural event than a musical event, 30 sounds about reasonable for the 90's, though to be fair Elton's best years were undeniably the 70's but while super-massive in the USA he never did huge sales on singles bar one Kiki Dee duet. Albums sold well though. So he was kind of owed it, maybe. Also note his other biggies, Sacrifice/Healing Hands were also flops in the 80's despite clearly being among his best work in the 80's (both topped my charts in 1989!), so those sales were owed on his lower ranking in the 80's. Spice Girls were another global phenomenon, so no problem with them grabbing the top spot really, that's fair enough. To add to the Stop! comments, It was my least-fave single of theirs at the time (and still, for the 90's) it just seemed like a disposable bit of singalong fluff - maybe that's why it's so big on streaming, catchy.

with music context is everything, and HiNRG was designed to get the blood pumping on a dancefloor by upping the bpm's on traditional dance music, I agree SAW at their best were pretty exciting in the early days, and could still drop gems in the chart-dominating Hit Factory era. I did like 2 Unlimited first 2 hit singles though as well, again fun on the dancefloor before they got a bit samey. I've always said a good dance record makes you want to dance, not curl up late at night with a cup of cocoa and a good book, and vice versa sticking an Ed Sheeran ballad on a dancefloor would get you complaints. I speak as someone who paid the price of moans for thinking it would be a larf at a uni digs disco to put on Jasper Carrott Magic Roundabout 😄Oh dear oh dearie me no, not a good idea 😄People just have no sense of humour when they want to dance...

Sam & Olivia make it a 20 week Rein reign, Ariana's 6th number 1 Petal blooms on Albums After the headline news of last week, the number one record extends further to 20 weeks non-consecutive weeks on top. Stating the obvious but Sam Fender and Olivia Dean are only 6 weeks away from a full 6 months on top. Half a year! 5% of the decade. Dai Dai dies back a bit on combined sales but holds at 2 for Shakira and Burna Boy. I just bought it. You're welcome! Ariana Grande has a new album, and therefore has the allotted 3 tracks in the chart, headed by title track Petal at 4, with album track Kiss Me at 15 and ex-number-one Hate That I Made You Love Me back up at 3. I make that 46 top 40 tracks so far. There has been some media focus on Ariana as she has announced she is stepping away from the public eye after her UK tour. I'm pleased she is going to be focusing on herself, she's been through a lot all-in-all. Elsewhere in the upper reaches, Choosin' Texas drops to 5, as the lovely Be Here falls short yet again of the top 40, doh! HUGEL, Imael Angel and Ultra Nate stay at 7 with the very infectious Movin' To The Sun, presumably summing up everyone in the northern hemisphere's Summer Of '26, while Sienna Spiro makes it a second top 10 as Great Expectation goes where Die On This Hill has already been - albeit one slot lower than the former's number 9. In at 27, the rather good Loser finally charts for Tame Impala, after falling short of the top 75 last year before Dracula hit big, and all thanks to its inclusion in the new box-office monster Spiderman: Brand New Day, which I will see soon, after the previous triple-Spidey fab movie. I bought Loser when it first dropped, along with a lot of their stuff over the many, many years Kevin wasn't getting hit singles - Loser is the 3rd top 40, all off the current album Deadbeat. ADELA with an accent over the 'E' is new in at 32 with Ain't in LA, which 99.9% of the world can relate to (at least), debuting on the chart with a decent track I have heard once so far, the Slovakian electronic-pop act seems to have come out of nowhere suddenly, if only to prove that new acts can still break through where others with fan bases can drop great records for years on end without that elusive hit . That has to give cause for optmism amongst all the perma-charters. In at 37, it's a bit of a Country moment as Luke Combs enters with Where The Wild Things Are, grabbing Luke his 3rd top 40 hit after his Fast Car cover and 2024 collab with Post Malone, Guy For That. He's been getting a lot of support from Radio 2 to boot, but whether that is impacting much on sales improvements week on week, who knows! Finally, dance track On 2nite hits a new peak of 13 for Silva Bumpa, an act that needs grammar and spelling tutoring. Or should that be 2-2-rng? Temper City take Self Aware to a new peak of 26, and Audrey Hobert climbs 7 to 33 with Sue Me. Certain politicians might take that as an invitation, so fingers-crossed for Audrey! Other perma-charters shuffle about a bit without doing anything interestingly new, other than offering up a number of candidates for the "Surely It's Gone From The Charts Now!?" award of the week. Winner this week: Unwritten. I ironically just wrote it.... In albums, it's an easy win for Petal, Ariana Grande's 8th top 10 album in a row dating back to 2013's Yours Truly, and her 6th number one in a row. AI tells me that equals Arctic Monkeys, The Police, Pink Floyd, Lana Del Ray and assorted others inlcuding err, The Script, so it must be factual (NB, I checked, yes it is, I'm not stupid enough to believe anything AI tells me). Essential Michael Jackson is at 2, Olivia Rodrigo's You Seem Pretty Sad at 3. Olivia Dean's The Art Of Loving is at 4 leaving Sienna Spiro to take up spot number 5. Katy Perry's HIts collection, The Ones That Got The Plays, hits a peak of 8 after 13 weeks on the chart - it sounds like her back catalogue will be doing the Biz as much as other acts hits collections do with streaming: Hang Around (not unreasonably). Her best album Teenage Dream, meanwhile continues to chart at 38. In other top 40 news....there isn't any. The Rolling Stones have managed a 4th week inside the 40, so that's notable for Foreign Tongues. All my other electrifying facts for mid-week albums entering are all but dust in the wind now. No Olivia Dean EP Growth (42), no Durutti Column (Renascent) grabbing a first-ever chart slot at 54 after 48 years on their first studio album in 15 years. No Davido, with Oriade at 98.

10th August 1976 It's another new number one, and this time it's the huge USA hit Afternoon Delight, as Starland Vocal Band get their deliciously cheesy harmony slice of cheekiness up 4 places. Dr. Hook get their highest chart peak to date, as A Little Bit More out-does Sylvia's Mother at 2, and Quo also get a new chart peak at for Mystery Song at 3, having had 5 previous top 10's that peakes lower. Wings get another top 5 with Let 'Em In, their 8th to do that, with 4 number ones (including one Paul solo). The Beach Boys make it a 6th top 10 as 60's Pet Sounds classic Wouldn't It Be Nice climbs to 8, with a host of new entries headed by Steve Harley returning along with Cockney Rebel on their version of George Harrison's Here Comes The Sun - as The Beatles most-popular song in the 21st century it seems incredible that it was never a single for The Beatles, not even bunged out in competition to this hit cover - and it would have featured in my Beatles Chart if it had. New in at 25 and Steve's 5th chart entry. The Chi-Lites' to date have been mostly powerful funk, emotional ballads, or upbeat pop hits, but they have one further genre change with the fabulous disco track You Don't Have To Go. I'm a big fan of the band these days, Eugene Record's songs and arrangements and vocals just have dated so well, as confirmed by the hosts of hit cover versions of their songs - but never this one! It's just crying out to be sampled, I reckon, new in at 27 and their 6th charter. Twiggy, the 60's famous and iconic model, had a go at being a film star in the musical The Boyfriend in 1971, but by 1976 she was full-on singer, with long hair, a new image and this tuneful Country ballad hitting the UK charts - Here I Go Again in at 33, a Country Joe McDonald cover. Dolly's The Bargain Store follows-up Jolene at 34, and about a year late, but Ms Parton by this stage has loads of back catalogue she can push out as she breaks-through in the UK at last, on her way to being a Country Music, film star and global legend. Not a UK hit, like almost all of her pre-film-career stuff (her prime work, in other words, all flopped bar Jolene). Harry J & The All Stars had a 1969 Uk instrumental reggae smash with The Liquidator, but that's one that didn't make it over to Singapore radio so I got to know 5 or 6 years later and charted it on re-issue in 1976, in at 40, and fab. At 44, soul star Lou Rawls grabs a UK one-off hit with his Philly grooves on the wondrous You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine, still an utter delight with that deep vocal, passion and yet another Gamble & Huff song and production that shines brightly. Warm and delicious. And his name sounds like Loo Rolls, what's not to love. The new James & Bobby Purify re-birth is back again with a spot of Morning Glory at 48, not quite as good as I'm Your Puppet, and not even What's The Story either. I had no idea what Morning Glory was at the time. With a modest entry Rod Stewart drops a remarkable track with The Killing Of Georgie, the first-ever overtly supportive story song of a murdered gay friend. Genuinely ground-breaking in gathering radio airplay, UK sales, and as usual for anything Rod takes the effort to write himself (he hates songwriting) it's pure class. His best solo effort since the double whammy of Maggie May and You Wear It Well. That leaves 60's act The Yardbirds, containing Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page on rotating legendary guitarist slots one after the other. For Your Love was written by 10cc's Graham Gouldman as an 18-year-old, so no doubt that influenced my entering the decade-on re-issue at 50. I saw Graham do the song live in St Peter's Church, Poole 2 weeks ago July 2026. Bom Bom yet another I had forgotten, and yes very Bjork-ish in delivery if not sound. Sounds quite fun in a repetitive fashion, but there's enough interesting bits to stop it being annoying. As I at best only vaguely recognise the song, I wonder what I thought about it at the time... (number 73, but at least it had a 3 week run). If it were to slot into my current top 100 faves it would be still be down the lower end, but that does still mean I quite like it but don't love it. So not bottom, but more joining the mass of OK's on the way to Good's. Gangnam Style is iconic, immediately recognisable and an absolute banger, and far and away the best track to drop out so far. What's not to love about it! Oddly it only peaked at 9 for me at the time (but had a long run) but it's better than that, would be top end of this rating for me.

Hi Chris, Guardians Of The Land sounds like a New Age/World Music pro-environment track and I feel I should remember it but I have only a mental image of an overly-earnest heart-in-right-place track. So I'm probably completely wrong! 😄I looked it up, anti-hunting song I didnt chart! The Groove was a funky summer 1980 instrumental as it was end of Uni and exam time for me, I think Rodney Franklin passed away recently. I usually listen to Radio 2 as I like their new music playlist, but sometimes pop into Boom Radio as they have more interesting lesser or forgotten hits from the 50/60/70's that never get played anywhere else now. The pub quiz last night had my online mate Mike Batt's intro to Summertime City as a clip, one I bought, theme to TV variety series Seaside Special (where ABBA debuted SOS) and only I recognised the top 5 hit. "Wombles" was one educated guess when the answer was revealed with the vocal bit. Mike has been posting the song the last couple of weeks along with his Symphony For Ukraine so everyone only have themselves to blame for not following him 😄

Boyzone are a surprise to be that high but I'd forgotten about No Matter What being a million seller. That said, I never really think of their hits as being big sellers and would have thought Take That outdid them! Persistence pays off I suppose!
