  1. ‘Yesterday’ was the last of my original nominees going out. I agree with many others saying it’s a lovely song but not near the top of my favourite Beatles tracks. Just interested to see the final verdict on that top 6 and which song will go on that roll of honour!
  2. Live Forever going out leaves me left with only one of my top 15 songs and my original nominations. It was actually my #1 song of ‘94 when I made my favourites list back then, but I think recent relentless hype seems to have caused ‘Oasis fatigue’ for most of their songs (Some Might Say excepted). Maybe with a bit of time my enthusiasm for them might return? I really can’t call what the order of the top 11 will be now, but I’m excited to find out. I still like them all really.
  3. Simultaneously one of the greatest dance, greatest rock and greatest rap records. Brilliant.
  4. Just echoing the sentiments of others, La Bamba is good fun and it was unusual, especially at the time, to have a non English language #1. I’d agree with your 6/10.
  5. Glorious Technicolor, a ray of sunshine!
  6. New single and added to the debut album ‘Switcheroo’, released last year, on streaming. Great electronic indie pop.
  7. Yes the original unedited video is memorable and shocking in equal measures (and award winning I seem to remember) though certainly NSFW (if you can find it nowadays)! A great song on a fantastic album, though just behind the two iconic number 1s in my opinion. Another of my favourites gone.
  8. This Charming Man going out leaves me with only 3 of my top 15 left 😢. Not my all time favourite Smiths song, they went onto much greater things, but still a fantastic song and a classic of its time.
  9. Plug in Baby is my peak Muse!
  10. Great song! Our Lips Are Sealed would be my absolute favourite Fun Boy Three single.
  11. NMEGeese live in London: indie buzz band take flight as gene...Geese live at Eventim Apollo Hammersmith: the most hyped band on the planet reach for the moon with a gig that cements them as icons in waitingExcellent 5 star NME review of Hammersmith gig!
  12. I agree Who’s That Girl is a case of Madonna playing safe and coasting a bit, which was exactly the opposite of most of the songs in her fantastic early career. It’s the epitome of average, so a 5.
  13. What a great idea for a thread, and one of the very best years to choose! Allow me to catch up then- Firstly, I agree with your bottom 2 songs. Let It Be is a poor, thrown together charity record typical of the era and has very little to offer musically. Also a 1 from me. Boy George’s cover version is nowhere near as good as the original, so feels unnecessary. A score of 2 for me. Being old enough (unfortunately) to have lived through this chart period as a teenager, I can remember the impact Jack Your Body had when it appeared, almost completely out of the blue, at the top of the charts. In the digital era we have every #1 signposted at least days in advance it’s easy to forget that could happen then. It might sound a bit tame compared to what came after but it was such a breath of fresh air, like nothing before, a proper what is that event. It’s fantastic and I’d give it a 9. Star Trekin’ is a difficult one, most times I dislike novelty songs but this feels quite humorous and nostalgic. Nowadays it brings a smile and I’m happy to hear it. Giving it a 6. Reet Petite is a song I liked before its resurgence at Christmas that year, my favourite of Jackie’s and a great 50s song. The video, though innovative at the time, along with the festive period, seems to have led to the idea it was a novelty song, but that really wasn’t the case prior to this year. I’d go for a 7. I’m really looking forward to the rest of your countdown!
  14. Had the privilege to see Geese live last night at a packed Manchester Victoria Warehouse, with the excellent local band Westside Cowboy in support. I still feel the influence of Talking Heads in their willingness to experiment and unpredictability in music and lyrics, but at times they reminded me of the Stones or Led Zeppelin as they had a much heavier sound live and stretched some of the songs almost into jam sessions. We even got an impromptu ‘Fools Gold’ cover version! Maybe a sign of their future development? And yes, going by the audience reaction/devotion last night I do think they’re going to be a massive chart success too! I haven’t seen anything like this since early Arctic Monkeys. Be very excited! All in all a fantastic night from a wonderful and, I now believe, generational band!
  15. Britpop legends release Johnny Cash cover version with 2 new songs ‘Marrying For Love’ & ‘Cold Call On The Hot Line’
