I'd love to know how close Spiceworld was to the top when it was #2 for 5 weeks. Is there any information readily available? This is who they lost out to:

29 November: Let's Talk About Love - Céline Dion - 91,000

6 December: Let's Talk About Love - Céline Dion - 91,000

20 December: Let's Talk About Love - Céline Dion - 142,000

27 December: Let's Talk About Love - Céline Dion - 219,918

10 January: Urban Hymns - The Verve - 78,000

There's a huge amount of chart run information below - unfortunately many of them aren't complete, but they're as much as what I could find.

Frustratingly one position is missing from the 'Greatest Hits' Scottish chart run... I don't really feel like trawling through 5 and a half years of Scottish charts to try and find it! :lol:

- Stop had sold 400,000 copies in the US by August 1998

- After an initial lukewarm response of 'Viva Forever' by the likes of Radio 1, 'Viva Forever' in its second week at #1 also topped the radio airplay chart, with a listenership of 78m - the highest of that year

- Viva Forever was serviced to US radio in August 1998 but was met with resistance because their appeal did not meet their targeted audience (the theory gained currency in the US with the audience being largely made up of pre-teens)

- ITV's Spice Girls Live at Wembley received 2.1 million viewers on Christmas Day

- Mel B was originally due to release 'Feels So Good' on December 11th 2000 as part of the initial promo plan

- After the release of Forever, despite reaching a #2 peak on the airplay chart, 'Holler' began to experience one of the speediest declines, slipping 2-7-26-23-40-84. It departed the Top 50 3x quicker than any other Top 5 Airplay Hit of that year

- Forever sold 88,700 in four weeks in the US, just over 1% of the Spice total (7m)

This has more than confirmed to me, if the girls had actually put in effort to promote 'Forever', it would have been a success in the UK at least. Industry support was there (to a lesser extent) but once 'Holler' went in at #1, the airplay shot up. It was #1 on MTV, local radio were also supporting. Even the opening sales of 'Forever' were the second highest #2 sales of the year. They would have never beaten Westlife but the era wouldn't have went into such free fall had they just kept up appearances and seen the campaign through.

Some of those numbers are so intense, thanks Jay and Colin!!

So many fascinating facts! Thank you so much for posting them all, Colin!

Their achievements were insane, which honestly makes it frustrating that the press were so keen to say that their success was dipping in late 1997. When in reality the first week sales of 191,856 were & still remains as the fastest selling girl group album of all time.

~

In Christmas chart week, Celine Dion sold 219,918 copies of Let's Talk About Love vs. Spice Girls on 186,000 - so she was almost 34,000 copies ahead of them. That was Spiceworld's 7th week in the chart, and it's cool to see that it came quite close to its first week sales of 191,856.

In Spiceworld's 5th week in the chart with 121k sales, Music Week stated that it achieved a "(sales) hike of more than 50%". That's a bit vague - plus 121,000 being a rounded figure doesn't help with accuracy - but it at least provides enough information to roughly work out that the maximum that Spiceworld could have sold in Week 4 is 80,666 at the most - that is the highest figure to be "more than 50%" (50.001%). Presumably them writing "more than 50%" means it was at least somewhat close to 50%. If it was a 59.99% increase then it would have sold 75,626. I think we can assume it sold somewhere in that region in week 4.

In Spiceworld's 4th week, Music Week simply shared that it achieved a 12% hike in sales. If we just decide that it definitely sold 80,666 in the 4th week, then a 12% increase would mean it sold 72,022 in the 3rd week.

The information provided is too vague to be able to say for sure that those week 3 and 4 figures are true, but if we just say in theory that they're correct... it's possible to work out roughly what was sold in other weeks (thanks to the fact that we know it sold 876,000 by week 7, and 1,060,000 by week 8 [which was its EOY 1997 sales figure]

09/11/97 - Week 01. #01 - 191,856 [Confirmed]

16/11/97 - Week 02. #01 - 91,228 [Confirmed]

23/11/97 - Week 03. #02 - 72,022 [Estimate based on percentage increase information provided by Music Week] (Celine Dion at #1 sold 91,000)

30/11/97 - Week 04. #02 - 80,666 [Estimate based on percentage increase information provided by Music Week] (Celine Dion at #1 sold 91,000)

07/12/97 - Week 05. #01 - 121,000 [Confirmed]

14/12/97 - Week 06. #02 - 133,228 [Estimate, based on subtracting the other 7 figures from 1,060,000] (Celine Dion at #1 sold 142,000)

21/12/97 - Week 07. #02 - 186,000 [Confirmed // at which point it had sold 876,000 in total] (Celine Dion at #1 sold 219,918)

28/12/97 - Week 08. #03 - 184,000 [This is based on what it would have needed to sell to lift its total from 876,000 to 1,060,000] (The Verve at #1 sold 230,000)

This issue of Music Week does muddy the waters by stating that Spiceworld's 7 week total was "nearly 870,000" rather than 876,000 though. :thinking: If 870k was true instead, then week 8's figure could have been 190k, and week 6 could have been 127k.

I suppose we'll never learn accurate figures for all of those 8 weeks, but hopefully the above is fairly close to the reality.

"Spice Girls TOTP special received 7.2 million viewers" - pretty incredible viewing figures! According to this BBC archive it aired on Christmas Eve. That means it contributed to Spiceworld's Week 8, #3, 184k sales week. Well, I suppose it's a bit of a pity it didn't get a bigger boost off the back of a TV show with 7.2m viewers, though I suppose if the programme hadn't happened at all, then that week could have attracted considerably less sales for the album.

How rude that the US radio stations were cold towards Viva Forever. <_<

I'm not sure what a typical music video budget was in the 90s though £290k for Stop's video strikes me as low - although it's easy to see why it didn't cost much to do that one.

Holler doing so well on UK radio airplay has always surprised me a bit, it must have been quite a significant factor in the single's success. Such a pity that radio abandoned it as soon as it appeared that the Spice Girls weren't so successful anymore. If they'd treated Holler like any other Top 5 radio hit then it might have helped both that single & Forever not fall down the charts quite as quickly. <_<

Mel B initially targetting the week before Christmas with Feels So Good is interesting. It does make more sense that the initial promo schedule was to have her release a single 2 months after Hot. I wonder if pushing it back by a whole 2 months was all that sensible or necessary? I wonder what the factors were in delaying it that much. According to Wikipedia the music video was shot in November 2000. Not sure when it premiered and went into rotation but presumably it was at the beginning of January 2001.

No problem at all, glad to share and love discussing all things charts ^_^

07/12/97 - Week 05. #01 - 121,000 [Confirmed]

14/12/97 - Week 06. #02 - 133,228 [Estimate, based on subtracting the other 7 figures from 1,060,000] (Celine Dion at #1 sold 142,000)

A Music Week article said in Week 6, it had increase of 3% - I think that roughly works out at 124,000?

I'm not sure what a typical music video budget was in the 90s though £290k for Stop's video strikes me as low - although it's easy to see why it didn't cost much to do that one.

It was the second highest in the list, behind Jamiroquai with a budget of £750k and just in front of All Saints Under The Bridge at £280k. From my understanding, this was the UK label budgets only. Slightly O/T but reading through the old articles confirmed my dislike of All Saints (not their music!), their first interview with Music Week Melanie Blatt goes as far to say "we're better looking than them and have higher IQ's" It always struck me how they would come for Spice Girls marketing gimmick, when their gimmick was to be marketed as the "anti-Spice Girls". Any article containing All Saints always had something to say about the Spice Girls. It was a clear marketing ploy for London Records, who wanted a slice of the Spice phenomenon.

Yes, even though Holler got the most radio adds when it was serviced, the likes of Radio 1, MTV & The Box didn't give as much as support as they did with their previous releases. I'm guessing they were unsure of the Spice Girls staying power and didn't want to be seen as supporting something that could be deemed as past it. But when the single went straight in at #1, airplay shot up. It wasn't until the album underperformed they dropped their support, quite drastically as you can see by the figures. It just shows how fickle the media were at the time with the girls.

The industry is very connected behind the scenes and there may well have been plenty of talk that the Spice Girls were essentially 'over' and Forever was doomed straight after release.

We know they had a meeting to decide the future of the album/band where it all essentially ended. Behind the scenes I'm sure that meeting was happening/happened was hard to keep secret.

What radio station would want to support an album the artist has already given up on promoting or being part of.

A 3% increase would make Spiceworld's Week 6 figure be:

14/12/97 - Week 06. #02 - 124,630

(That figure comes from us accepting that 121,000 is the accurate figure, when in reality it could have been a bit more or a bit less!)

09/11/97 - Week 01. #01 - 191,856 [Confirmed]

16/11/97 - Week 02. #01 - 91,228 [Confirmed]

23/11/97 - Week 03. #02 - 72,022 [Estimate / Week 04 was said to be a "12% hike in sales", so I worked backwards from the estimated 80,666 figure]

30/11/97 - Week 04. #02 - 80,666 [Estimate / Week 05 was said to be a "sales hike of more than 50%", which makes this figure the highest figure it could be, if we take 121,000 as being the precise figure, which it wouldn't have been]

07/12/97 - Week 05. #01 - 121,000 [Confirmed]

14/12/97 - Week 06. #02 - 124,630 [Estimate / "3% increase" compared to the week before]

21/12/97 - Week 07. #02 - 186,000 [Confirmed]

^ That adds up to just over 867,000 after 7 weeks (estimated, not accurate) which falls in line with "Spiceworld has sold nearly 870,000 in seven weeks". Do you remember which issue said that the 7 week total was 876,000? Music Week seem to have a tendency to make errors. I wonder if they actually meant 867,000 and swapped the 6 and 7 by mistake?

Well if we go with it being around 867k to 870k by week 7: Spiceworld increasing to a total of 1,060,000 after 8 weeks suggests that its sales at #3 in the 8th week could have been around 190,000 to 193,000 copies! That creates the possibility that it could have achieved higher sales in that particular week than in its first week, and also the possibility that a week spent at #3 was with higher sales than any of the weeks it spent at #1 or #2!

~~~
I definitely remember All Saints riding the wave of being considered the cool alternative to Spice Girls, they really capitalised on it and it seemed to work! I did like All Saints at the time and it didn't put me off, but I remember my classmates considering Spice Girls to be uncool to like in 1998, it was all about All Saints (and funnily enough B*Witched and Aqua, who were surely cheesier than Spice Girls... but my fellow 10 year olds had made up their minds that Spice Girls were out!!).
A fair point! We all know that they essentially imploded and Melanie C had had enough, but in better circumstances I wish they'd have been able to perservere and make it more of an era. Clearly there was a lot of catastrophising going on about Forever only being #2 and being trounced by Westlife, but regardless, Forever's sales initially were still pretty decent, they'd only just had a #1 single with Holler. Anyone would think they'd gone to #41 or something! There was stuff to build on with those sales, but sadly they decided to (or even had to) let it die.
I think welsh charts were available from 2003.
Unfortunately the earliest copies I have are from March 2008 :cry:
I'll try get on to Spiceworld but estimates will be even harder because of its chart run. Thanks Jay for providing us with the estimates of the first 8 weeks!
It's incredible how consistently well 'Spice' sold, even a few months after the release of Mama/WDYTYA!
Some of the hit albums released in recent times can take months or even years to accumulate the amount of sales that Spice could manage in just a week.
I miss when album sales were healthy and could have a life for a long period of time :cry: So many albums now basically last for one or two weeks and they're gone.
