Posted December 31, 201311 yr http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/TheMagicPosition86/1123_zpscf44aa02.png Hello! As we enter the final moments of the year and say goodbye to twenty thirteen, I am once more (see: 2012 and 2011 for earlier examples of my poor music taste) going to share and look back at my favourite one hundred tracks of 2013 - I hope to provide some commentary as we get towards some of the bigger hits, and will provide the usual artwork and chart run info. The hits are ordered by their performance on my personal chart, so don't expect any massive shocks or surprises, and certainly expect me to have changed my mind massively about most of the tracks and therefore render the publication of a points based chart pretty much useless. The formula used to come up with the points system is needlessly complex and required the use of Tianhe-2, and the equivalent energy usage of a small country over a year to crunch the numbers in time. But it was worth it, because now we can know that "I Love It" by Icona Pop and Charli XCX was the worst performing Top 10 hit of 2013, peaking at #8 and securing just 117th in the rankings. Fascinating. Still with me? Ok. Here are the number 1s of 2013. All TWENTY. Stats to follow: 06-01-2013 |03| Autre Ne Veut "Counting" 27-01-2013 |02| Röyksopp ft. Releasing her fourth studio album Once I Was An Eagle in May (her biggest, reaching #3 in the UK), the lead single taken from it was "Master Hunter" and is exactly the kind of folk/country music that should be making it big instead of the awful chart fodder that makes people turn even further against the genre! It made the Top 10 at the end of June and kicks of the first ten nicely at No.100. Also representing the British country music scene, the wonderful Jamie N Commons is at No. 96 with "Rumble and Sway" - however we are still waiting for his first album over 2 years since his debut single release "The Preacher" in December 2011. Take your time Jamie. The finest commercial dance track of 2013 is at No.99, Duke Dumont's wonderful "Need U (100%)" - which kicked off a stellar chart period where UK #1s became actually quite good for a time around the middle part of the year (it didn't last) - and also represented a mainstream shift to a revival of 1990s deep house, a shift that started underground at the start of the decade. There are the first of two chart entries for Foals ("Late Night" at No. 95), the return of Franz Ferdinand and Boards of Canada ("Right Action", No.93 and "Reach For The Dead", No.94 respectively) and Ellie Goulding makes a belated return (No. 91, "Figure 8") after last making the year-end chart in 2009 with "Under The Sheets". Finally though, it would be rude not to mention Katy B and Jessie Ware, a dream collaboration that sent "Aaliyah" to #8 in January, and loses out slightly due to missing some chart weeks to the previous year.. <<< FnJIb4A-DuY #099: Duke Dumont
December 31, 201311 yr So what IS your points system?! Not too many of your first 10 I've actually heard, but Aaliyah and Reach For The Dead are both lovely stuff!!
December 31, 201311 yr Author So what IS your points system?! That is a closely guarded secret. :P It uses an exponential decay function, much like http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/3/f/2/3f28b1c0d4362b86a89f976d83d81070.png http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/TheMagicPosition86/40b0_zps3c3fb6b5.png #090 Wolf Alice "Blush" (497) Debut: 3rd November 2013 Chart Run: 46-30-19-14-10-06-09-09-13* (9 weeks… so far) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51Hsmd9tz-L._AA160_.jpg #089 Kendrick Lamar "Swimming Pools (Drank)" (499) Debut: 10th March 2013 (Re-entry) Chart Run: 50-31-19-11-11-08-12-21-31-43 (10 weeks) http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/TheMagicPosition86/be62_zps81deebe6.png #088 The Killers "Shot At The Night" (501) Debut: 29th September 2013 Chart Run: 47-33-23-18-16-14-20-28-31-39-47 (11 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41vhuwNBDzL._AA160_.jpg #087 The Naked and Famous "Hearts Like Ours" (511) Debut: 28th July 2013 Chart Run: 50-31-23-17-17-22-12-18-30-38-44 (11 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51A+qWpMwfL._AA160_.jpg #086 Temples "Colours To Life" (516) Debut: 16th June 2013 Chart Run: 38-27-21-27-40-26-16-12-17-26-43 (11 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41FuK3W11oL._AA160_.jpg #085 Robert DeLong "Global Concepts" (517) Debut: 2nd June 2013 Chart Run: 38-24-13-08-06-08-15-24-34-50 (10 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51poTluIteL._AA160_.jpg #084 Miguel "Adorn" (519) Debut: 14th July 2013 Chart Run: 46-33-25-16-11-09-14-21-30-44-50 (11 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51nRsXCol-L._AA160_.jpg #083 Villagers "Nothing Arrived" (533) Debut: 2nd December 2012 Chart Run: (2012 chart run...-05-04-04-06-10-14-20-30-41 (9 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/314aTwibqhL._AA160_.jpg #082 Jessie Ware "Sweet Talk" (540) Debut: 6th January 2013 Chart Run: 50-36-29-21-16-08-08-11-19-31-44 (11 weeks) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/412bIDIkNkL._AA160_.jpg #081 Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Despair" (552) Debut: 30th June 2013 Chart Run: 44-34-29-37-24-18-10-10-19-28-39-50 (12 weeks) >>> Villagers bagged their first #1 in 2012 with the wonderful "The Waves" - following this, the second single from {Awayland} was atheist anthem "Nothing Arrived" about the meaninglessness of life.. "Nothing Arrived" managed a couple of weeks in the Top 5 back in January for Conor O'Brien and charts here at No.83. The Killers came back with the strong "Shot At The Night", which may not have reached the Top 10, but hung around for long enough to take it to No.88 in the chart of the year, a similar fate to The Naked & Famous' "Hearts Like Ours" (No. 87). One of the most innovative and strangest tracks in the Top 100 comes from 27 year-old drummer and electronic musician Robert DeLong. "Global Concepts" stormed into the Top 10 back in June, and features a cacophony of drums, electronic synths and warped vocals and marked an dramatic uptick in the dance output of America (after the ridiculousness of Skrillex). Yeah Yeah Yeahs make their first appearance of 2 with "Despair" at No. 81 and Jessie Ware likewise makes the first of two appearances (3 if you count "Aaliyah") with "Sweet Talk" - a far cry from her domination of 2012's chart which saw her make 5 appearances (3 of which were in the Top 40).<<< iDEzRraYgA8

Two more singles to come for them in this countdown! There is the first single ("Carry Me" at No. 78) from Bombay Bicycle Club's fourth LP So Long, See You Tomorrow which is due in February, and a recent hit from Blood Orange ("Chamakay" at No. 72) - Dev Hynes who recently celebrated his 28th birthday on 23rd December has made the Top 10 under 3 different names: Lightspeed Champion (twice, #7 and #6) in 2008, Test Icicles (#9) in 2005 and Blood Orange this year - twice! In this section there is also the debut single from AlunaGeorge; "You Know You Like It" (No. 79 and originally released in 2012) which was re-released this year and vaulted to #7 in July. (677) Debut: 18th August 2013 Chart Run: 36-24-17-11-08-03-05-11-19-28-37-44-50 (13 weeks) >>>Ben Pearce's addictive house track "What I Might Do" (first released in late 2012) may have forever remained an 'unknown pleasure' had it not been for it's advert sync up with Tesco back in the early part of Autumn - the track was given a new lease of life and shot up into the UK Top 10. The song itself takes the American singer/songwriter Anthony Hamilton's 2003 track "Cornbread, Fish & Collard Greens" and turns it into a house classic. Speaking of putting a modern twist on a classic, Clean Bandit - a British group who broke through in 2013 - took Mozart's 1789 ~smasher~ "String Quartet No. 21" and added the talented vocals of Ssegawa Ssekintu along with some thumping bass to brilliant effect. "Mozart's House" smashed into the UK Top 20 and reached #3 on my chart back in May. Arctic Monkeys continued their impressive Top 10 streak into 2013 (only in 2008 did they fail to score a Top 10 hit in the past 9 consecutive years), and "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?" was their 2nd biggest of the year, from 5th studio album AM. QotSA made a muted comeback this year, but lead-off single from 6th studio LP ...Like Clockwork ("My God Is the Sun") was pretty much what we have come to expect from the band and featured Josh Homme's familiar falsetto, some heavy guitars and brutal drumming! It launched to #5 and clocked up over 3 months at lands at No.53. There were long overdue returns this year from Daft Punk and David Bowie, but we also got one from Pulp whose reworking of a early 2000s demo "After You" (No. 56) brought them back into the Top 5 in March.<<< iFca32_7YUU

"Signal 30" takes its name from a 1950s American road safety film and was used to excellent effect to soundtrack the end of the Brazilian F1 grand prix on BBC1 last year. Swedish group Postiljonen (translated: Postman!) provided some uplifting dream pop in the form of "Supreme" (No. 50) which sounds very much like M83 Saturdays=Youth era and climbed to #5 in June to soundtrack the early part of my summer. Other summer tunes from Chris Malinchak ("So Good To Me", No. 48 - the highest non-Top 5 hit in the list) and Joywave ft. KOPPS ("Tongues", No. 45) also feature in this section. Vanessa Brown (aka V V Brown) made a strong return in 2013 with "The Apple" at No. 46, and also returning to the year-end chart were Vampire Weekend who managed to chalk up their 3rd number 1 in April, but with Modern Vampires of the City also scored a #2 in "Unbelievers" (No. 44). Danish singer MØ - No.49 with "XXX 88" (who turned 17 just 2 days ago) was the youngest person to make the chart in 2013, younger than New Zealander Lorde by just 2 months. Finally we have Poliça at No.41, using to great effect guest vocalist Justin Vernon, and a shockingly violent videoclip to accompany "Tiff" - the lead single from their 2nd album.<<< Rd_-JY3yq9w The Top Forty will follow later today..

Lead single "She Will" is a good reference point for the album, a furiously energetic and angry song about gender inequality that leaves a big impression on the listener. It stormed to #3 in June and kicks off the Top 40 nicely. Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind

The song itself has a great haunting quality to it with the female backing vocals drifting in and out of the mix. Initially only charting at #20, renewed hype on BuzzJack encouraged me to revisit the track and it peaked at No. 5 in August. Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind

New Zealander Ella Yelich-O'Connor broke through in a big way last year with debut single "Royals" (peaking No. 21 on my chart) a #1 smash on both sides of the Atlantic - but it was "Tennis Court", a 3 minute 19 second ode to her new-found fame in her homeland that was the song that I most fell in love with. The track was produced by Goodnight Nurse frontman, Joel Little and debuted at #1 in New Zealand, joining "Royals," "The Love Club" and "Swingin' Party" in the NZ Top 20 and making Lorde the first New Zealander to have 4 songs in the Top 20 concurrently. The track has everything you want from a Kanye track - angry and vitriolic lyrics, thundering tribal drums (reminding me slightly of the KLFs 88 smash "Doctorin' The Tardis" ) produced by Daft Punk and a killer performance. Sadly it missed out on #1, joining the ever-increasing list of AMAZING Kanye #2's like 2010s "Runaway".

The track isn't anywhere near her finest moment and lacked the depth and power of a lot of the singles prior to this, but still retained the soul, and R 'n' B influences of the debut and amplified them into a 1990s-type pop anthem. The curse of Jessie Ware* meant this went nowhere near the official Top 40 of course. *Officially recognised by the OCC Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind

Metric was introduced to Malin through his work remixing "Mother Protect" - he knew then that she had the perfect voice for the track "Safe With You". High expectations then were met with the undeniably beautiful vocals cascading amongst a pulsating dance behemoth of a tune. Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind

The track was picked up and rapidly ascended the chart - making No. 3 in August, and reminded me strongly of the kind of piano house that was popular for a time in the early 90s. Apparently his new single samples TLC 1999 anthem "No Scrubs". Look out for that in 2014. Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind

The track only narrowly missed out on becoming the brothers third #1 of 2013.. though despite this the year has been there's by a MILE for certain. Seeing them live at Latitude in July on a hot summers night was one of my personal highlights of 2013.

Providing vocals on Rudimental's essential 2012 dance anthem "Feel The Love" it was undoubtably preceded by a large amount of hype. It turns out that was totally justified as the song itself is another massive and instantly likeable pop anthem with a killer chorus, whilst at the same time retaining his soul influences. The single eventually made it to No. 3 upon it's delayed UK release in July and spent much of the summer inside the Top 40.

The single rapidly rose into the Top 10 and gave them a 2nd (of 3) Top 10 hit in September, peaking eventually at No. 3. They have 1 more hit still to come! I have always been a massive fan of Bowie but have never been able to chart anything of his at #1 so it was kind of IMPERATIVE that this made it. Thanks to this excellent remix by James Murphy with its nod to the self-referential themes of the album (by dropping in samples of his 1980 classic "Ashes To Ashes") the tune was a big favourite to end the year. At 10:25 it is the longest song ever to chart at #1. Edited January 1, 201411 yr by Doctor Blind
