Andrew's ReviewNow That’s What I Call Music! 85 also known as Now 85 was released in the Summer of 2013 with 44 Top 20 tracks from that era of the year, including 9 UK #1 singles. This volume was the first to include music from John Newman (as a lead artist), Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Iggy Azalea, Fuse ODG, Duke Dumont, The 1975 and Tom Odell.

In terms of omissions, there are not that many notable absentees from this volume. A few Top 10 singles got overlooked from the likes of Lawson, Rihanna, Wretch 32, Loveable Rogues and Sub Focus with many others which didn’t peak as high.

A handful of artists make their only series appearance on this volume including Passenger, Icona Pop, Paramore, Imagine Dragons, Gabz, Sebastian Ingrosso (as a lead artist), Armin van Buuren, Chris Malinchak, Breach, Union J and Charlie Brown.

Artwork Rating: 6/10 Good

It’s ok at best this artwork, I always like a good Summer theme done properly, and I like the beach landscape with palm trees and bright sunshine. Just the overuse of surfboards is a little much. I should score it less in fact for this is the second time surfboards have been used on the artwork for a Summer volume, previously seen on Now 64.

Disc 1 Favourite: Imagine Dragons – Radioactive

One of the last great debut rock singles I remember discovering at the time, good enough to inspire me to buy their album at the time. They haven’t topped this single for me since then, but still a great band all the same.

Disc 2 Favourite: Armin Can Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie – This Is What It Feels Like

A feel good song which I played a lot from 2013, and I remember it put me in a good mood each time.

Disc 3 Tracklist:

(A concept of what a third disc might look like if other hits from the era were used)

1. Rihanna feat. Mikky Ekko – Stay 4:00 {4}

2. Lawson feat. B.o.B – Brokenhearted 3:29 {6}

3. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton – Can’t Hold Us 4:18 {3}

4. 2 Chainz & Wiz Khalifa – We Own It 3:47 {6}

5. Wretch 32 feat. Shakka – Blackout 3:46 {6}

6. Clean Bandit – Mozart’s House 3:51 {17}

7. AlunaGeorge – Attracting Flies 3:09 {17}

8. Nicky Romero & Nervo – Like Home 3:21 {33}

9. Sub Focus feat. Alex Clare – Endorphins 4:06 {10}

10. Mat Zo & Porter Robinson – Easy 5:39 {28}

11. Afrojack feat. Chris Brown – As Your Friend 4:00 {21}

12. Stylo G – Soundbwoy 3:48 {18}

21. Kodaline – High Hopes 3:51 {16}

----------

Total time: 1:19:37

Overall Rating: 8/10 Extremely Good

This volume has a great selection of music from the time, a really good end result from the available tracks from the time. It was a good time for music in general and dance music was very much a prominent genre still. It always amused me that a song from the early 90’s made a comeback reaching a new peak of #1 and all from an appearance on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway! A fine volume for sure!

How the hell is this Paramore & Imagine Dragons only Now album? They’ve each had lots of hits over the years :( In fact this Now especially there seems to be a large amount of alternative/rock songs both included and omitted :o

This is such a great Now album! So many great tracks were released in the spring/summer of 2013!

Here's my Top 5:-

1) Daft Punk feat. Pharrell - Get Lucky

2) Paramore - Still Into You

3) Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding - I Need Your Love

4) Chase & Status - Lost & Not Found

5) Duke Dumont feat A*M*E - Need You (100%)

Artwork: 7/10

The artwork isn't bad, it's not necessarily anything note worthy but I've seen much much worse.

Overall: 7/10

Overall this Now is an exceptional one for sure, Disc One is full of such great songs that have yet to get old for me. I can live without PJ & Duncan, Iggy Azalea, Fuse ODG, and Gabz - but that's just four songs from an otherwise fantastic disc. Disc Two is a bit more disappointing, the first 9 songs are 10/10 but everything after This Is What It Feels Like just falls flat for me really. Chocolate and Another Love are good but don't make up for everything around them :/

There's a handful of omissions that I do enjoy as songs but are understandably missing for the most part. Stay, Can't Hold Us, High Hopes (:wub:), Love Like This, Young And Beautiful, On Top Of The World, and Fall Down are songs I each love to varying amounts but I'm not surprised to see most of them missing. Stay is an odd case I think because at this point Rihanna was still letting her songs on Now albums. High Hopes would've been a superb addition to Disc One after Radioactive I think.

  • 5 years later...

Just looking at a few more of these, don't mind me :P

From 10 years ago Edition then..

I love the beach imagery on the disc covers so for that I put extremely good.

First disc I'll have to go with John Newman as that song topping the chart back then was great although Daft Punk, Justin (prob my fave of his tbh), Olly and Passenger (yes we'll agree to disagree here -_- ) are my highlights!

Disc 2 though.... what a naff list lmao. Seriously bad oops. 'Another Love' a clear top pick here. To think what a streaming hit it's been and that it re entered the top 40 this year to have it so low!!

Overall 5/10 though as the disc 2 let's it down for me as fab as the artwork is!
