 Next out it's Damita Jo. The album was recorded over 18 months and channels Janet's various personalities. She compared its creation with that of an author, creating different characters throughout it. It's a very sexual album as the various characters of her inner being are unleashed. She performed at the Superbowl before the album was completed and it of course led to her infamous breast exposure. Promotion for the album was therefore near impossible to gain, however it was still a success. It reached #2 in the US and also received a received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. "All For You" gets my vote for this round.
It has some amazing moments on here, the amazing "All For You" - one of her very best, with its slinky disco bassline, with a sample that works perfectly with the modern beat. Everything just works on this. (Probably her last great single). "Come On Get Up" - A strong beat & pretty catchy, WHY wasn't this the 4th single like planned, it could have smashed. "Trust A Try" - Fast & rocky, yet very dramatic & love the snarling guitar work. (Again why wasn't this a single), "Son Of A Gun" - This is okay, definitely one of the stronger tracks on here, but dunno why this was pushed ahead of the previous 2 I just mentioned. "Someone To Call My Lover" - A wonderful track, far more pop than most of the album & its killer with its light beats (again one of her greatest singles of her career). "Doesn't Really Matter" - Another really good track & single choice. I find that with this album, when it's good, it's really good with these tracks being the clear highlights, but on the whole its bogged down by having far too many fillers & this could have easily been trimmed down to about 12-13 tracks & this would have been far better & more accessible. |
