I suggested an idea for the forum to feature a Taylor song to discuss each week. I thought it would be fitting to choose her debut single first.
Lyrics (if these are ever wrong, let me know) He said the way my blue eyes shined Put those Georgia stars to shame that night I said: "That's a lie." Just a boy in a Chevy truck That had a tendency of gettin' stuck On back roads at night And I was right there beside him all summer long And then the time we woke up to find that summer had gone But when you think "Tim McGraw" I hope you think my favorite song The one we danced to all night long The moon like a spotlight on the lake When you think happiness I hope you think "that little black dress" Think of my head on your chest And my old faded blue jeans When you think Tim McGraw I hope you think of me September saw a month of tears And thankin' God that you weren't here To see me like that But in a box beneath my bed Is a letter that you never read From three summers back It's hard not to find it all a little bittersweet And lookin' back on all of that, it's nice to believe But when you think "Tim McGraw" I hope you think my favorite song The one we danced to all night long The moon like a spotlight on the lake When you think happiness I hope you think "that little black dress" Think of my head on your chest And my old faded blue jeans When you think Tim McGraw I hope you think of me And I'm back for the first time since then I'm standin' on your street And there's a letter left on your doorstep And the first thing that you'll read Is when you think "Tim McGraw" I hope you think my favorite song Someday you'll turn your radio on I hope it takes you back to that place When you think happiness I hope you think "that little black dress" Think of my head on your chest And my old faded blue jeans When you think Tim McGraw I hope you think of me Oh, think of me Mmm You said the way my blue eyes shined Put those Georgia stars to shame that night I said, "That's a lie." Video I can probably add more here later, but just to get this up and running. How do you feel about this song? Do you like it? Dislike it? Should it have been her first single? If there are any notable videos or things related to this song that someone wants to add in here, feel free to do that as well. |

I feel Tim McGraw is a song I love and return to much more than I would if it hadn't been her debut single! It's such a cute song and I always forget how gorgeous it is when I listen to it, and it's a really strong start lyrically in showing why she is the lyricist of this generation
I'd place it 9th out of 14th on her debut album! It's such a stronger debut album than I give it credit for considering this is a 9/10 song for me fab for this to be a top 40 hit in America and also I loved the Rep Tour performance where she performed this with Tim and Faith! <3 I cannot remember the video for the life of me though. Loving this series and so looking forward to see what you will pick in the future! <3 |

I think it was a very smart idea to launch her career with a song named after a country superstar. Don't know if she would have had such a great start with another song from her debut album.

I don't go back to this song much. I need to refresh my memory when it comes to the video.

Gosh I still remember when this was her current single and Taylor was just starting to be talked about by people at school. The song didn't stand out that much to me other than thinking it was bold to have a debut single called Tim McGraw...but for the rest of this era I liked each single just a little more than the one before it!

Okay so I’ve just listened to this for the first time. Wasn’t sure about it to start - the video is so country. I can see they were absolutely catapulting her into the country genre. I’ve listened to it a couple of times and think it is a super song. I love her story telling and it’s great that’s been a feature from the start. Presumably this is about a guy she’s no longer with and is talking through all the things which remind him of her. It’s got a great catchy chorus and a great starting effort. I’ll have to listen to the rest of the album - it’s nice to see where it all began & not sure why I haven’t done this before now.

a lovely performance
this thread has really got me back into her first album again aha!! I lowkey don't think I realised how much I underrate it Most of it is SO GOOD!! (It's nearly on fearless' level for me tbh, Fearless has higher highs but also a lot more fillers when inc. the deluxe versions) |

A nice tender little number, very sweet & relatable, a good starting point for what's about to come. On the whole a great choice of a lead single, even if its not one of the stronger moments in her extensive discography, but a firm highlight on her debut with its very polished Country-Pop sound that's aged pretty well considering its 14 years old. However a lot of Country tunes have that timeless quality.

Love the live performance - she’s so talented. I’m really looking forward to getting into this album and her other earlier albums once I’ve become a little less obsessed with folklore and my other favourite artists have stopped releasing new music.
