Posted September 25, 200915 yr Did you know that it's been *eight* years since we've had a single that's sold a million purely on merit (i.e. excluding charity/'talent' show boosted)? Can anyone name the last song to do so? Also, how long do you think it'll be before we have another genuine million-seller?
September 25, 200915 yr The last time 2 UK Singles sold a Million in the UK, because people simply liked them, (rather than hype & publicity, through TV Shows & Charities), was in 2001:, 'It Wasn't Me' - Shaggy Feat. RikRok 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' - Kylie Minogue
September 25, 200915 yr Definitely Kylie, however I do believe that due to downloads, in recent years, Torn, Angels, Wonderwall and Back For Good have supposedly passed a million, but it isn't really the same, is it? However, with sales growing, it could only be a couple of years until things will go back that way. Lady Gaga has passed 800k with Poker Face and 700k with Just Dance-sales like that were unheard of even in 2008!

September 25, 200915 yr Author Definitely Kylie, however I do believe that due to downloads, in recent years, Torn, Angels, Wonderwall and Back For Good have supposedly passed a million, but it isn't really the same, is it? Not based on release dates, no. However, with sales growing, it could only be a couple of years until things will go back that way. Lady Gaga has passed 800k with Poker Face and 700k with Just Dance-sales like that were unheard of even in 2008! ISTM Pokerface should make it on trickle-sales in a couple of years, not to mention it should get a substantial boost immediately after Xmas...
September 25, 200915 yr Two next candidates must be Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" and Leona "Bleeding Love" - both over 950k I think.

September 26, 200915 yr Author Per Robbie : Re : Leona 'Bleeding Love' Its not her winners single. Doesn't matter - at the time she was the current XF winner, and had the massive benefit if it being played on the show.
September 26, 200915 yr Doesn't matter - at the time she was the current XF winner, and had the massive benefit if it being played on the show. That's a poor argument if I'm being honest, based on the following:-Bleeding Love wasn't an X Factor winner's single, therefore that argument is non-existent.Furthermore, other comeback singles performed on the show - e.g. Leon Jackson's Don't Call This Love didn't perform anywhere near as well. The performance on the show probably added sales, but I don't think the magnitude of those sales (i.e. the % of sales that were a direct result of her performance on the show) are anywhere near as great as everyone seems to think. If that were the case, then Bleeding Love would have sold massively in the UK and performed averagely everywhere else, which was clearly not the case.I think this rationale should now be dropped.

This. The whole thing makes me so bloody annoyed. If people insist on saying it perhaps we should also include every song used/performed on X Factor too. Seems fair.

Disagree with 1) - she *was* the last XF at the time BL was released, since Leon J didn't win until a few weeks later. Re 2) - this point has some validity. Re 3) - since the thread is about *million-selling* singles, and Bleeding Love *didn't* sell a million, the extra sales the show generated for it are irrelevant.
September 26, 200915 yr Author This. The whole thing makes me so bloody annoyed. If people insist on saying it perhaps we should also include every song used/performed on X Factor too. Seems fair. I disagree, since other acts who have their songs covered/perform on the show have already established themselves without the benefit of XF exposure, therefore their sales are indisputably on merit. ************ As I've mentioned elsewhere, I use a three year rule (*) - if a talent-show performer survives that long, I deem them to have broken free of the stigma, and thus established themselves on merit. The real proof of the pudding though, would be if she can score a #1 with a song released during XF's off-season. This situation will surely arise early next year, as she will no doubt release more than one single from 'Echo', and there won't be time for a 2nd before this Xmas. (*) I might even be being a little generous, given that it took Girls Aloud *seven* years to win a Brit... Edited September 26, 200915 yr by vidcapper
September 26, 200915 yr And there was an obvious reason why Leon didn't sell as well as Leona did with BL. Because he was a $h!te singer.

September 27, 200915 yr Yet he won XF... Given that Same Difference made the final that year, it was hardly a remarkable pool of candidates.
September 27, 200915 yr Given that Same Difference made the final that year, it was hardly a remarkable pool of candidates. And yet Rhydian >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Leon... Rhydian should have won =/
September 27, 200915 yr Bleeding love sold as much as it has, beacuse of the song, and Leona. It isn't all owed to the fact she won X Factor the previous year. People are making out that Bleeding love's success was easily achived because of its 'links' with the show, this is rubbish! As it has already been said look at Shayne/Steve B/Leon's follow up's, anything close to a million selling single??? NO! just admit it Yeah she had exposure from X Factor, and promoted on there (do you exclude anyone that does that??) but ultimately the song sold 900,000+ copies beacuse of the SONG. If not Kylie Minogue is excluded from that list..because Kylie Minogue appeared on Neighbours and people know her from that.... <_< Edited September 27, 200915 yr by Justin
