Groovejet never gets old either, unlike the horribly dated sounding Out Of Your Mind...
I think you mistook it for your chart :o

yes, the second one :cheer:

Maria and of course Knut Anders Sorum have made my top 45 of the decade :cheer:

I thought it'd be Haldor Lægreid or at least Tor Endresen :(

agreed, 2006-2009 has been fantastic throughout with only parts of 2008 being an exception

What's with 2008? Santogold <3

What's with 2008? Santogold <3

Tor wasn't from the noughties

2008 was good but only 9 utterly amazing songs compared to 15 this year...speaks volumes to me

47. Delta Goodrem - Out Of The Blue - 2004

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

If there was ever an act I was more obsessed with than Alice Deejay and Kelly Llorenna, it's easily Australian singer Delta Goodrem. Her second, but not last, entry in the countdown is the hugely underrated Out Of The Blue. Maybe not the strongest choice of lead single from second album Mistaken Identity, it was nonetheless a joyous swaying piano pop affair which bought a much needed touch of class into the dire UK charts at the time. Piano ballads were the last thing that was popular in 2004 and Delta was seemingly heading the genre all on her own (well apart from Everytime by Britney Spears!!!). A gorgeous song that she performed an excellent new rendition of at her recent Believe Again tour (probably better than the single version), it went top ten in the UK, like all but one of her singles did but she remained anonymous to most.

You already know that i approve of all Delta related entries into this chart [believe Again had best be #1] The version she did on tour was stunning.

Not as different from the original as predictable tho, that was stunning at the Believe Again tour.

  • Author

agreed, the Predictable version was stunning, I can't actually listen to the original now because it sounds too slow in comparison :o

this OOTB version is so gorgeous though, I wish she'd make a studio album of different versions of her older songs - would be incredible!

I tired to listen to predictable after i heard the tour version and couldn't do it. It's far too slow

45. The Corrs - Summer Sunshine - 2004

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

After four years out, it seemed unlikely that Irish family band The Corrs, who had their biggest year in 1998 with the huge Talk On Corners album, would make much of an impact with new album Borrowed Heaven. However, they made a massive impact as the album went in at No.2 in the UK, led by the brilliant Summer Sunshine, probably their best single since the Talk On Corners era. A joyous uplifting pop song with the typical Corrs trademarks' Jim's melodic piano, Sharon's violin, Caroline's emphatic drumming and Andrea's perfect vocals and of course the brilliant harmonies provided by Sharon and Caroline. It was like nothing at all out in 2004 and seemed completely irrelevant to the music scene at the time, but it was brilliant to see them back on top form.

44. Mariah Carey feat Joe and 98 Degrees - Thank God I Found You - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

From her 1999 album, Rainbow, Mariah Carey's second single from the album was the ballad Thank God I Found You. Given a fresh lick of paint with an excellent remix package - namely Stargate's radio edit, and the fantastic Make It Last remix with Nas - which was essentially a completely different song but still great, the song quickly became my favourite Mariah single. Hugely underrated and forgotten by most, the song was a #1 in the US but only reached #10 here. I'm not sure why I loved it so much - the harmonies by 98 Degrees, the soulful backing vocals by Ne-Yo's predecessor Joe, or Mariah's typically brilliant lead vocals. The chorus is brilliant, I love the key change and the general feel of the track. Such a forgotten gem.

43. Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

After the huge and completely unexpected success of one of the decade's definining British pop songs, Whole Again, Natasha, Liz and Jenny re-released their debut album, Right Now, with some new tracks and obviously replacing Kerry Katona's vocals with those of Jenny Frost. Leading the repackaged album was Bangles cover Eternal Flame. Obviously a brilliant song, although I was never a huge fan of Susanna Hoffs' voice so needless to say, I absolutely loved this version of the song. I was hardly a huge fan of Atomic Kitten beforehand but this converted me into one. One of my favourite cover versions of the decade, from one of my favourite groups of the first half of the noughties.

42. Thrillseekers feat Sheryl Deane - Synaesthesia (Fly Away) - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 5 weeks)

I know very little about either this band or the featured singer but I do know that this was one of my defining anthems of the early noughties. I first heard it in late 2000 but can't recall where and was absolutely mesmerised by the song. In 2001 it finally got a UK single release but peaked at something ridiculous like #27...for one of the greatest vocal trance anthems of the decade, it was a huge and very sad injustice. Such an uplifting song with a beautiful melody, it is one of many tracks that prove that dance - seen as a very cold genre by some - can in fact be more emotional than many other genres if you find the right song.

41. Alexander Rybak - Fairytale - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

After the fantastic 5th place for the classy Hold On Be Strong by Maria Haukaas Storeng in 2008, the pressure was on for Norway to produce something special for Eurovision 2009. I heard all of the songs in their national selection, Melodi Grand Prix, in January this year and two songs instantly stood out. Tone Damli Aaberge's gorgeous mid-tempo pop strummer Butterflies and Fairytale, an uptempo violin led track by Alexander Rybak. The song fused together contemporary pop with traditional Norwegian music and it worked absolutely perfectly. I was hardly surprised to see it storm to victory in Melodi Grand Prix with a sensational winning margin of 7-1 against Tone who finished a deserved 2nd. The song had winner written all over it and instantly became the bookies overwhelming favourite to win Eurovision, despite the fact that Norway have only one neighbouring country, and most of the other winners of the decade have been criticised for only winning because of neighbourly support. Alexander put in a typically great performance and stormed to victory with by far the biggest winning score ever, with points from every single country. The song became a worldwide hit, it even reached the top ten in the UK, typically anti-Eurovision!!! An amazing pop song and a well deserved winner, easily the best of this decade.

45. The Corrs - Summer Sunshine - 2004

  Fantastic chart so far gooddelta

thanks Spiral :D here's some more;

40. Aurora feat Naimee Coleman - Ordinary World - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

One of dance label Positiva's many hits in 2000, British dance act Aurora had achieved some success with debut single Hear You Calling but teamed up with Irish singer Naimee Colemean for a top five hit in late 2000. A pulsating pop trance cover of Duran Duran's early 90's hit Ordinary World, it breathed new life into an already gorgeous song with Naimee's strong vocals making it much more than another identikit dance cover. This song had fantastic production and transformed the original making it sound like a brand new song, unlike a karaoke cover version. I still absolutely love listening to this.

39. Delta Goodrem - Not Me, Not I - 2003

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 6 weeks)

After a 60 song drought, finally another song from the musical monstrosity that was 2003. Australian singer Delta Goodrem's fourth single Not Me, Not I was her classiest single yet. Mind you it had good pedigree - it was co-written by Gary Barlow!!! The video was iconic in that Delta filmed it just before beginning chemotherapy for her cancer treatment. The video and song were both absolutely beautiful - it was a shame it could only reach #18 in the UK charts but it was yet another #1 in Australia and deservedly so. A soaring string ballad that Gary is of course well known for, Delta's vocals made it perfect, and this song and the b-side, her gorgeous cover of Happy Xmas (War Is Over) rounded 2003 off excellently musically for me.

38. ATC - Around The World (La La La La La) - 2002

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 6 weeks)

First released across Europe in 2000, it was supposed to come out in the UK too at that point (they even appeared in Smash Hits at the time!) but Europop act ATC, who were based in Germany but hailed from the UK, Italy, New Zealand and Australia, finally released the song in the UK in summer 2002. It had a slightly updated remix and got some airplay but still could only reach #15, much lower than it had got across Europe. But then again it probably would have done better in 2000 because the 'sound' was more popular than in 2002 when cheesy Europop was being replaced with Pop Idol rejects pop. Still, I was obsessed with this group, although only this one song...everything else was so samey that I didn't bother with it. I recall writing a GCSE English essay about the band in fact haha!

37. Ira Losco - 7th Wonder - 2002

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Eurovision 2002 in Estonia was a bit poor really...the staging, the production values - the weird animated aardvark/Jive Bunny type thing running across the scoreboard the whole time, the weird operatic female and low booming male presenters, the generally atrocious songs, the tragic winner from Latvia...luckily it wasn't all bad. If we erase Marie N's I Wanna from our minds we can pretend that Estonia's brilliant Swedish singer Sahlene shared 2nd (not third) place with our very own Jessica Garlick and Malta were the rightful winners with one of the most perfect pure pop songs of the noughties - 7th Wonder. Ira, who is now one of Malta's biggest stars, was a charming, note perfect singer, with a twee routine but it still wasn't good enough evidently. Just how the hell did Malta not romp away with the competition!?!

36. Girls Aloud - The Promise - 2008

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 6 weeks)

2002 Popstars: The Rivals act Girls Aloud are probably one of my favourite artists of the decade - of their 21 singles, I've never less than 'really liked' any of them, however despite excelling with Sound of The Underground, No Good Advice, Love Machine, Biology and Something Kinda Ooooh amongst others, nothing of theirs ever made me think 'wow this really is an incredible song'. Until in 2008 when they finally hit proper pop gold with The Promise. Tapping perfectly into the soul pop sound so prominent in 2008, the group - who had by this point become a national instituion, far bigger than rivals Sugababes, had their biggest era to date with the Out Of Control album and The Promise, a HUGE radio hit, was deservedly their biggest single since Sound Of The Underground. A great, catchy pop song with brilliant solos from Sarah ('Here I aaaam...walking primrose' and Nicola, a fantastic, and unprecedented for Girls Aloud, key change and a triumphant ending rather than the usual fade out - I was in love with this and still am.

51. Groove Armada feat Mutya - Song 4 Mutya - 2007 Amazing. Incredibly underrated!

53. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone - 2005 Well you know my thoughts on Ms Clarkson and this song is what turned me into the obsessive freak of a fan I am! Gutted to see you've seen her TWICE! :drama: Ah well I'm going in Feb :cheer:

54. Nerina Pallot-Everybody's Gone To War – 2006

55. Charlotte Perrelli – Hero - 2008

56. Daniel Powter - Bad Day - 2005 One of the most underserving One-Hit wonders ever? Poor Daniel. This was an amazing song and he deserved to have much more success as his albums were actually very decent!

57. Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry - 2007 NEVER seems to get old! Stunning ballad!

58. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together - 2005 See above really

59. Ian van Dahl - Will I? - 2001

61. Keri Hilson, Ne-Yo & Kanye West - Knock You Down - 2009 You know what I think! HA! And Casey!! I'm extremely disappointed!

50. Spiller feat Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love) - 2000 VILE and incredibly overrated :puke: (As you may know of what I think about this song by now :heehee:)

49. Alice Deejay - The Lonely One - 2000

48. Kelly Llorenna - Tell It To My Heart - 2002

47. Delta Goodrem - Out Of The Blue - 2004 Really disappointing! Loved all her singles from the debut album I think. This, completely the opposite :(

46. Natasha Bedingfield - These Words - 2004 Stunning pop song. One of the songs that defines 2004 without a doubt

45. The Corrs - Summer Sunshine - 2004 The only Corrs song I actually LOVE! Well and 'Runaway' I suppose...

44. Mariah Carey feat Joe and 98 Degrees - Thank God I Found You - 2000

43. Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame - 2001 Any more Kittens to come? Hopefully not 'Whole Again'! :(

41. Alexander Rybak - Fairytale - 2009 PLEASE TELL ME THIS ONE IS A JOKE!? :snif:

40. Aurora feat Naimee Coleman - Ordinary World - 2000

39. Delta Goodrem - Not Me, Not I - 2003

38. ATC - Around The World (La La La La La) - 2002

36. Girls Aloud - The Promise - 2008 Overrated and overplayed imo. They have far better, which hasn't even done as well as this! :(

Great chart so far Rich. Although the last half of my comments are actually quite negative! :(

35. Fragma - Toca's Miracle - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

One of the earliest, most influential, and biggest selling dance hits of the noughties. German danct act Fragma combined their 1999 #11 hit Toca Me with British singer Coco's minor 1997 top 40 hit I Need A Miracle and the result was the dance mash-up Toca's Miracle. The two songs fit together absolutely perfectly, the chillout Toca Me being livened up by Coco's brilliant vocals; her original had always been a bit weak due to the cheap sounding production. The two songs were fine on their own but together they were sensational and helped to kick start a craze of dance mash up's which has gone on throughout the decade. A deserved UK #1 single, out of the 42 UK #1's in 2000, it was one of only a few to manage more than a solitary week at No.1!!! Showing it's enduring popularity, an electro remix of the song was released in 2008 and returned the song to the UK top 20!!!

34. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

Early 2005 was probably the worst three or four months for music of the entire decade. However, in February 2005, I decided to take a chance on Scottish singer KT Tunstall's debut album, Eye To The Telescope, having heard about her in various places. First time I listened to the album, I was instantly impressed by a number of songs but none more so than the gorgeous ballad Other Side Of The World. It went on to become a top 15 hit here, and launch her album to the top three where it deserved to be, but I still think that this song is hugely underrated. In a year when James Blunt's You're Beautiful got five weeks at #1, how come this beautiful song couldn't even make the top ten!?! Great singer, and this is her finest moment.

33. All Saints - Rock Steady - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 7 weeks)

Talking of underrated, nothing was more underrated than the Studio 1, the fantastic 2006 comeback album of late 90's 'edgy' girl group All Saints. Lead single, Rock Steady, was thankfully a massive hit and the only thing that went well in their comeback campaign. Although considering it was beaten to #1 by Westlife's horrendous slaughtering of The Rose and U2 and Green Day's tragic take on The Saints Are Coming, maybe it wasn't such an achievement after all. A brilliant pop song, instantly catchy, giving all of the girls a chance to shine - particularly the brilliant Shaznay and Melanie Blatt. A brilliant typically fiesty video, it was like they'd never been away and I just wish it had been a much bigger hit!!!

32. Fragma feat Maria Rubia - Everytime You Need Me - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

A full year after hitting #1 with Toca's Miracle, Fragma finally returned in early 2001 with a much more poppy sound but still the subtle electro backing which made them so popular in the first place. Everytime You Need Me, which featured a different British singer, Maria Rubia, was less of a dance anthem and more of a glorious pop song. I first heard and loved this round about autumn 2000 actually so it took a long while to come out but I was glad when it returned the band to the UK top three. Follow up single You Are Alive was also a very decent pop-dance song, and their debut album was brilliant, but I haven't really been interested in anything by them since, and they are still going strong now!!!

31. Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

Summer 2001 saw the release of Belgian dance act Ian Van Dahl's debut UK single, Castles In The Sky. It featured guest singer Marsha rather than usual singer Annemie so was rather confusing when Will I came out to find out that curly dark haired Marsha was not in fact the lead singer!!! The song was an instant hit and became bigger throughout the summer climbing as high as #3 in the UK and quickly becoming a favourite of mine. Just an absolutely brilliant dance song, and undoubtedly one of the defining dance classics of the decade. It was absolutely everywhere at the time and I still hear it now.

Great chart so far Rich. Although the last half of my comments are actually quite negative! :(

thanks Jonjo; Agree about Groove Armada, Fergie, Powter and Mariah  Knock You Down is easily the urban highlight of 2009 - sensational song - thank you for introducing it to me! I would have had to wait an extra 6 weeks to hear it otherwise :kink: ha at the last batch of comments - Out Of The Blue is beautiful, especially her new live rendition of it! I disagree about GA, I think that this is their best and was really pleased that it outperformed everything else! No more kittens to come, I'm not a fan of Whole Again...now that was overrated! They do however have more than one appearance in the top 50 albums :o

35. Fragma - Toca's Miracle - 2000 One of the most most iconic dance singles ever, like you said, but it's far from my favourite. I like it, but not as much as others seem too. I always preferred 'Everytime You Need Me' farrr more.

34. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World - 2005 The only KT Tunstall song I actually, genuinely LOVE.

33. All Saints - Rock Steady - 2006 At the time I despised this. And I really don't get the fuss over All Saints either TBH. But as time got on, I found this song to be amazing. It is actually quite underrated!

32. Fragma feat Maria Rubia - Everytime You Need Me - 2001  Glad to see you think it's also better than 'Toca's Miracle'! :D

31. Ian Van Dahl - Castles In The Sky - 2001 Definately one of my all time fave dance tracks. Although I think I am slightly getting bored of it now though :(

Brilliant set of songs there

34. it's so gorgeous

33. really :o it's brilliant! it was #1 in my chart for 7 weeks  I was Bad Romance like obsessed over it!!! I saw them live in late 2006 too - they sang this, another new album track + Black Coffee and Pure Shores. Ironically, I can understand you not getting the fuss because prior to Rock Steady, I was never really a fan apart from Never Ever and War Of Nerves. I Know Where It's At, Bootie Call and their two crap cover versions didn't interest me at all

32. yes, it is slightly better :kink:

31. I know what you mean  it was shaping up to be about #20 before I knocked it down a few places when I looked over the whole top 100 properly and started rejigging songs into their rightful places!

30. Shakira - Whenever, Wherever - 2002

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

A huge star across the world since the mid 1990's singing in Spanish, Colombian singer Shakira finally launched in the UK in 2002 with her first English album Laundry Service, although it still included a handful of Spanish language tracks. The fantastic Whenever, Wherever was the first taste of the album and the memorable video instantly became a hit making it seem like the song was a shoe-in for #1. Except she released it on the same week as Will Young's Evergreen, the biggest selling single of the decade. Nevertheless it's probably one of the defining #2 singles of the noughties and certainly one of Shakira's most popular singles. I still hear it daily on the radio!!! A fantastic pan-pipe dominated ode to distance in love with the quirky lyrics that we have come to love from the superstar. 'lucky that my breasts are small and humble, so you don't confuse them with mountains' was my favourite line!!!

29. Delta Goodrem - A Year Ago Today - 2003

Personal chart peak: #2

The second Delta Goodrem album track to make an appearance, this song actually had a video filmed for it when Delta was 15 with her voice sounding incredibly different and a lot more high pitched. The ballad was revamped for the Innocent Eyes album and instantly became a favourite of mine, not least because I bought the album the same week as she was diagnosed with cancer, making this song seem all the more poignant and emotional. I think the lyrics are something that everybody can relate to. A moving ballad that becomes very uplifting in the last minute. I personally think this would have been a fantastic single but many fans criminally saw it as 'filler' so that wouldn't have happened. Beautiful song.

28. Delerium feat Sarah McLachlan - Silence - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Yet ANOTHER dance song from 2000, the peak of commercial dance, Canadian dance act Delerium teamed up with hugely underrated (in the UK at least) and hugely influential singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan for a bizarre monk's convent sounding song called Silence. A series of remixes were produced including an epic 10 minute Tiesto remix and the UK radio edit, my favourite version, which was done by Airscape. Turning an odd church like song into a defining dance anthem is no mean feat, but this really was the classiest dance song of 2000. Absolutely breathtaking and a deserved UK top three hit!!!

27. Madonna - Hung Up - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 6 weeks)

After the commercial flop of 2003's American Life era, the queen of pop Madonna returned to dance music, but instead of the funk/house influences of 2000's Music and the chillout influences of Ray Of Light, she went full on trance/techno with the Confessions On A Dancefloor era. First single Hung Up sampled Abba's Gimme Gimme Gimme and was an absolute club stormer, easily her best single since 1998. Adding a pulsating dance beat to the classic, she used the sample brilliantly and layered a fantastic new chorus over the top. Easily my favourite Madonna single of the decade, pop perfection.

26. Delta Goodrem - Born To Try - 2003

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

The first 3 months of 2003, as I've said, were generally terrible. I genuinely thought that music had died. However, in April 2003 I heard a song that literally took me over - a beautiful piano ballad by somebody with an incredible voice. I found that the song was by a girl called Delta Goodrem who played Nina Tucker in Neighbours. I was astonished - from that point onwards I started watching Neighbours just to see this girl. It wasn't long until she became my favourite singer, and the sole saviour of 2003 musically. Her vocals on this song, considering she was 16 when she recorded it, are sensational, particularly after the key change. The song was a surprise top 3 hit in the UK and launched her as a successful artist for the next couple of years...I only wish that the success had continued...The song was rumoured to be in contention for the X Factor winner's single last year but it never happened...if only Simon had chosen it over The Climb this year instead :(
