Yay :w00t:

I need to try and do one of these, but I have only been doing a personal chart for six months :o I'll have to go back through chart archives... have you got an archive of the European chart since 2000?

  • Author

no :( I've been making a personal end of year top 20 every year since 2000, so took all 200 songs and put them together, got rid of stuff that I don't like so much anymore/wasn't worthy of a place in this list and I was left with a top 138 shortlist - the painful part was getting rid of 38 songs from that list...to leave me with an incredible (to my taste at least ) top 100

some of the stuff that made my top 20 of 2003 was just laughable - Karen Parry - Flashdance? Soda Club - Heaven Is A Place On Earth?

I rather liked Deep Dish - Flashdance... dunno if it's the same song...

nope worse, a cover of Irene Cara's Flashdance (What A Feeling) by the girl who sang on Flip & Fill's Shooting Star

Hello Rich. Here's what I know and like/love so far.

99. Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver - 2005

98. Puretone - Stuck In A Groove - 2003

94. Vanessa Amorosi - This Is Who I Am - 2009

93. Kelly Llorenna - This Time I Know It's For Real - 2004 I gather she has more to come? 'Set You Free' is blates number one :smoke: she has an amazing voice, but I have never heard her album LOL

91. Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You) - 2007 THE BEST UK EUROVISION ENTRY OF THIS DECADE (Well behind Daz Sampson :kink:) imo.

88. Little Boots - Remedy - 2009 Brilliant. The thing that makes it sound different to other RedOne productions (bar the ciopy of 'Fire Burning') is the fact she doesn't do a call-out! HOW CAN YOU NOT DO A CALL-OUT?!? :( LOL.

87. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love - 2007 Such a stunning song, it's incredibly lower, alot lower than I though it would be :o Although I suspect 'Rule The World' to be alot higher (Around top 30 maybe 20 for you) but not sure which the other song could be as you wasn't that keen on 'Umbrella' I think you said...

86. Colbie Caillat - Realize - 2007

thanks Jonjo :D

yes indeed, there's more to come from Kelly Llorenna  Daz is still to come as well  I love the cheesy entries! love that they were the only two to make the UK top ten as well! Agree about Remedy, she should have done 'Red One, Bootsy' Bleeding Love was overshadowed by a couple of songs for me at that time, hence its low showing here...I don't love it as much as everyone else, it's not even my favourite Leona single! although I do still adore it  Rule The World is indeed one of the two that overshadowed it and is up later

I'll only be posting videos for forgotten classics now, well up until the top 20 maybe where I'll post everything  it's hard to believe that I had over 200 #1's in my chart this decade, yet loads of the songs appearing here only reached #2 or #3 for me  must have made some mistakes with some of those chart toppers!!!

85. Lady GaGa - Poker Face - 2009

Personal chart peak: #2

Easily the biggest selling single of 2009, Just Dance was good, well great for a debut single, but it's Poker Face that transformed this 'Lady' from a singer into an icon. Like its predecessor, Poker Face was produced by the mysterious RedOne and released almost everywhere else in the world in 2008!!! It first charted here in January as an album track and gradually made its way up the chart, eventually to #1, and has gone on to sell close to 900,000 copies this year!!! An absolutely stunning pop song, and the one that truly made me see what the fuss was about with this woman. Rewind back a few years and there's no way UK radio would have played anything like this, favouring singer/songwriters and indie bands like James Blunt, Snow Patrol and The Kooks. Turn on the radio now and you'll hear Lady GaGa - and nothing else. An absolute legend, and the decade's most promising new star.

84. Jo O'Meara - What Hurts The Most - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

S Club 7's lead singer Jo O'Meara finally launched her solo career in 2005, two years after the band broke up, and two years after fellow S Clubber Rachel Stevens launched her incredibly successful solo career. Her debut single, and only single in fact, was a cover of a country song, turned into a pop song for Jo, and later turned back into a country song by Rascal Flatts, and most notably into a dance song by Cascada. I do love the Cascada version, and it sold a lot more than Jo's version, but the song is a slow song at heart, and I do prefer this version. Jo has a stunning voice, possibly one of the best British vocalists of the decade, so it's a shame that ever since her involvement in Big Brother's Jade/Shilpa-gate she's never given it another go, because without her, S Club 7 would have been a very weak band indeed.

83. Timbaland feat Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake - Give It To Me - 2007

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

The fan's favourite Timbaland single is The Way I Are with Keri Hilson, the radio's favourite was of course Apologize with One Republic so just to be different, my favourite single from Shock Value was by quite some stretch Give It To Me. An incredibly subtle song which despite the talent on the song, didn't have anyone shouting or overdoing it, instead being a very simple yet incredibly effective R&B song with what was very fresh production at the time. Nelly sounded great, Justin played his part and even Timbaland's vocals were good on this. One of my favourite R&B songs of the decade, and I was extremely glad when it went to #1 in the UK!!!

82. Cascada - Everytime We Touch - 2006

Personal chart peak: #2

2006 was personally my favourite year of the noughties for various reasons. Musically it was on odd year - singer/songwriters and indie bands were slowly being phased out after 3 years of dominating as quirky popstars like Lily Allen and Sandi Thom started to rule the charts. After years of no Eurodance at the top end of the charts, Infernal's From Paris To Berlin became a huge hit at the start of the summer and then at the end of the summer, German trio Cascada, led by the incredibly underrated Natalie Horler, who really does have an excellent voice, stormed into the top five with their huge US hit Everytime We Touch. Cascada duly became the only Eurodance act of the decade that I can think of that have lasted beyond the first two singles, indeed they are still going strong almost four years on, and rightfully so, their singles have so much more personality to them than the average trashy Eurodance act. Especially this one, one of the dance classics of the decade, incredibly catchy and a great party song.

81. Rank 1 - Airwave - 2000

Personal chart peak: #3

Rewinding right back to the very start of the decade for this. Dutch act Rank 1 slipped into the UK top ten with this trance classic in April 2000. The highly influential song had a haunting melody, later ripped off on True Love Never Dies by Flip & Fill/Kelly Llorenna. I don't really know an awful lot about Rank 1 to go off on a tangent about them, I just know that this song is absolutely glorious, possibly my favourite instrumental track of the noughties, well aside from one vocal 'I feel you over the airwave'.

Just Dance completely pales in comparison to Poker Face. Funnily enough though, I like JD a lot more now than I did when it was out (only got to #7 in my chart!) but Poker Face is sooooooo much better  yeah Cascada's version was in my top 200 of the decade but not top 100 unfortunately :( still love it though! yes, whenever I think of a Timba/Keri 'fan', I instantly think of you  you are the voice of the Keri fans/only Keri fan? :heehee: I couldn't believe how big Everytime We Touch was either! shame it only sold 300k or so because it was released in a low sales era :(

81. Rank 1 - Airwave – 2000 :o  This is great, a song i always associate it with is Angelic's 'It's My Turn', possibly on the same Now! or something!

82. Cascada - Everytime We Touch – 2006 LOVE the candlelight remix of this

83. Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake - Give It To Me – 2007 I prefer this to 'The Way I Are' although most others don't :(

84. Jo O' Meara - What Hurts The Most – 2005 Failed to make my top 200 :( would have been in my top 300, amazing

85. Lady GaGa - Poker Face – 2009 Epic epic! Lady Gaga is beyond amazing. I prefer 'Just Dance' though, which will you'll see in my countdown :D

86. Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love – 2007 Stunning.

87. Colbie Caillat – Realize – 2007 Definately her best

88. Little Boots – Remedy – 2009 Little Boots is absolutely amazing, love this song so much. Going to see her live next week :D

89. Zero 7 – Destiny – 2001 ! was in my shortlist of songs, but failed to make my top 200

99. Natalie Imbruglia – Shiver – 2005  gorgeous, I love Natalie, her voice is stunning

thanks Casey  surprised you like so many to be honest :o glad somebody's with me in the Timbaland debate! indeed Airwave is on the same Now album, I bought both Airwave and It's My Turn on single  2000 was a stunning year for dance, hence why 2000 has more songs than any other year on this countdown

Aha, I do generally like most stuff :D Although the last couple of years my taste has become a lot less mainstream ! Dance music has been really good this decade imo.. Several have made my end of decade chart, and some are really high

my taste has gone all over the place from about 2006 onwards

for example I genuinely do like or love 45 of the 46 songs sent to BJSC this month, which, thinking about it is ridiculous considering how diverse it is musically

80. Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Pink and Mya - Lady Marmalade - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

One of my favourite collaborations from the start of the decade, Christina Aguilera, Pink and Mya teamed up with rappers Lil' Kim and Missy Elliot who produced, on a cover of LaBelle's Lady Marmalade for the soundtrack to the Moulin Rouge film. A far better version than the one that All Saints had churned out three years before, Christina's vocals were by far the highlight of the song for me, although I did also enjoy Lil' Kim's rap!!! A deserved UK #1 single in summer 2001, it obviously had great production because it still sounds quite fresh now!!!

79. Leona Lewis - Run - 2008

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Back to Leona Lewis again, and her final entry here. Leona first performed her theatrical cover of Snow Patrol's Run in the Radio 1 Live Lounge in 2007. A year later in 2008 she performed it again on X Factor to launch the re-release of her debut album Spirit, which duly went straight back to #1. Two weeks later, the album was finally made availble on iTunes and the eagerly anticipated Run went straight to #1 based solely on download sales, whilst the song became Leona's third consecutive Christmas top 3 hit and her second bonafide decade definining moment!!! An absolutely breathtaking version of the Snow Patrol song, offering something completely different to the original. It's a trick she's tried again with Oasis' Stop Crying Your Heart Out on her new album, but surely nothing will top this? One of the best ballads of the last couple of years easily.

78. Delta Goodrem - Electric Storm - 2004

Personal chart peak: #2

And so on to my favourite artist of the decade, with the first of a few entries in this countdown and the first non-single to appear. Australian star Delta starred as Nina Tucker in Neighbours and went onto a hugely successful music career. Electric Storm was taken from her second album, Mistaken Identity, a much darker affair than the first due to her having battled cancer in the 2 years between the first and second albums. Electric Storm was one of the standouts of a stunning album - a mature, dark yet powerful song about troubled relationships which always reminds me of Christmas Eve for some reason. Wouldn't have made a great single but it sure as hell made a brilliant album track.

77. Alphabeat - Fascination - 2008

Personal chart peak: #2

Helping the 'cool pop' revival of 2008 was Danish six piece Alphabeat. Led by female singer Stine and one of many people called Anders in the band, Fascination quickly won over hearts in the UK, easily becoming one of 2008's defining hits even though it only reached #6. You know that it's had a huge cultural impact when Simon Cowell lets the X Factor Finalists cover it at the start of one of the live shows!!! A joyous, catchy pop song, fusing classic pop melodies with slight hints of indie, Alphabeat were truly one of the great bands of 2008 with Boyfriend and 10,000 Nights also being absolutely brilliant. Their new album, whilst very good, suggests that they may have lost the ability to relate to the public, but Fascination was most definitely the right song at the right time. Oh, and there is no more live concert defining moment than the callback 'The word is on your lips...say the word!'

76. Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten - 2004

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

Back when Natasha was just Daniel Bedingfield's prettier sister making a name for herself with the above average pop song Single, I didn't really think anything of her apart from that she was a chancer getting lucky thanks to her brother. Then I heard These Words. WOW. Then I bought the album. Goodbye Daniel! Unwritten was one of a ton of standouts on one of the quirkiest and freshest pop albums of the first half of the decade. A gorgeous, uplifting and positive mid-tempo strummer complete with a gospel choir that instantly became my album highlight and a college anthem. It did ok in the UK charts but it was nothing compared to how big the song became. Featuring in every advert under the sun as well as becoming the theme tune to US teen show The Hills, the song went top five in the US, launching Natasha as a huge star over there - a territory that her brother had already had his own success!!! Even the US knew of the great Bedingfield sibling rivalry!!! If You're Not The One aside though, none of Daniel's material ever touched what his sister came up with.

77. Alphabeat - Fascination - 2008

Personal chart peak: #2

Not their best song for me, that would be Boyfriend or Fantastic 6, but it's become their encore now though, I don't know when you saw them live?

  • Author

April last year...so it had already been a big hit by that point so was the overwheming crowd favourite...as far as Alphabeat singles go, my top 5 would go;

1) Fascination

2) 10,000 Nights

3) Boyfriend

4) The Spell

5) What Is Happening - so underrated :snif:

love all five though + Fantastic 6! Heart Failure is nowhere near the quality of these :snif: DJ is though :magic:

99. Natalie Imbruglia - Shiver - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Australian singer and ex-Neighbours actress Natalie Imbruglia of course had her biggest hit in 1997 with Torn. However, she has carried on going strong throughout the noughties, and hit her commercial peak of the decade in 2005 with the surprise (excellent) UK #1 album Counting Down The Days led by the most played song on the radio of that year, Shiver. Like the more sophisticated, more mellow older sister of Torn, it had a powerful chorus, a strong melody and was extremely relevant to the guitar led indie scene of the mid-noughties, whilst staying true to her 'sound'. Should have peaked far higher than #8 in the charts...

98. Puretone - Stuck In A Groove - 2003

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

2003 was a busy year for me personally, finishing high school, starting college, getting my first job etc...The music scene in my opinion was either on a real downer, or I just wasn't paying much attention, because only 6 songs from that year have made this countdown and without giving too much away, if it wasn't for Australia, only one song from that year would feature here!!! Dance duo Puretone's second single Stuck In A Groove was a bit belated really, coming out well over a year after the huge Addicted To Bass, and limping in to the UK top 30 with barely anybody noticing...which was a huge injustice as this was without a doubt the best dance track of a terrible year for the genre commercially. Completely different to its predecessor relying more on the melody than the bassline, and another excellent car chase video!!!

Shiver is stunning

and i adore Stuck In A Groove

Was Addicted to bass not late 2000 early 2001? I remember having it on my mp3 player at primary school

92. KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

The year of the singer-songwriter, but KT Tunstall was different from the rest, more edgy, like a modern day Sharleen Spiteri, perfect for daytime radio, a friendly personality, but with a bit of a kick to her. The third single from Eye To The Telescope was by far her biggest hit, becoming a radio classic, a huge hit in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and even the US. An indie-pop anthem which was always my highlight of the album when I first got it so was extremely pleased when she decided to release it as a single!!!

88. Little Boots - Remedy - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

Another very recent song now, Victoria Hesketh, aka Little Boots hasn't quite been as big as the hype suggested this year. Despite topping all manner of 'future star of 2009' polls, she rather lost out to La Roux and Florence + The Machine in the popularity stakes. When she finally launched, when the hype had disappeared, with New In Town, the video was laughable and the campaign was near enough written off with the single failing to go top ten and the album going in at #5 before diving to #40 the following week. However, Remedy just about restored some credibility, turning Little Boots into a full blown pop star with this incredible RedOne production, which was nothing like his stuff with the likes of Lady GaGa, yet retained the storming pop chorus that he's best known for. Unfortunately she looks as if she'll be a one (major) hit wonder, but what a hit it was!!!

 superb track

I'll only be posting videos for forgotten classics now, well up until the top 20 maybe where I'll post everything  it's hard to believe that I had over 200 #1's in my chart this decade, yet loads of the songs appearing here only reached #2 or #3 for me  must have made some mistakes with some of those chart toppers!!!

Love Lady Marmalade.

You know how much i adore Electric Storm

you like quite a few then Phil  a surprising amount of Jo love in this thread it has to be said :o Addicted To Bass came out here in early 2002 but was originally from 1999 or something in Australia and was floating around here for quite some time before the official release!

I'm impressed that you had an MP3 player in 2001! I didn't get my first one until 2004 or something  I always had a Discman before that!
