75. The Sound of Arrows - M.A.G.I.C. - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 5 weeks)

Right back to the start of the year and one of my favourites of 2009, Swedish electro pop duo The Sound of Arrows are yet to breakthrough properly despite producing the glorious pop songs M.A.G.I.C. and Into The Clouds, not to mention the truly stunning videos for both songs. M.A.G.I.C. owes a lot to the music of Justice, particulalrly D.A.N.C.E, but ends up sounding a lot more fun, childish and charming in comparison to the often harsh and dark tones produced by Justice. A brilliant song, showcasing the vocals of the lead singer on the verses, who sounds somehow like a Scandinavian Neil Tennant, and a sampled choir sound on the chorus. It truly is magic!

74. Mason vs. Princess Superstar - Perfect (Exceeder) - 2007

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

All good things happen in threes, so when Fedde LeGrand's Put Your Hands Up For Detroit and Bodyrox's Yeah Yeah both became huge UK electro hits, completely revitalising the dance music scene in the process, it was only natural for a third huge hit from the genre to come along. Surfacing in 2006 originally as a rather excellent instrumental called Exceeder, by German producer Mason, US rapper Princess Superstar, who had been a one hit wonder here with 2002's Bad Babysitter, added vocals from her song Perfect in a Toca's Miracle style mashup, and voila, one of the defining electro dance songs of the last few years and a huge UK top 3 hit!!!

73. Love Inc - You're A Superstar - 2002

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

Not technically a noughties song, Canadian dance duo Love Inc's sound was compared to Sash!, and it was hardly surprising seeing as the song first came out in 1998 in Canada. A gloriously uplifiting piece 90's dance with excellent vocals from singer Simone Denny and inspirational positive lyrics, the follow up single Broken Bones, was very nearly as good. This song helped me through many a Music GCSE listen, as I put the video on whatever was the predecessor to youtube as I was supposed to be writing an 'original composition'!!! It's a shame it didn't go any higher than #7 in the UK, but it did spend about 28 weeks stuck at #7 so it probably sold as well as a lot of #1 singles did, paritcularly seeing as it came out in the busy xmas market which saw Girls Aloud and One True Voice's infamous battle for #1!!!

72. Cascada - Evacuate The Dancefloor - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

Another song from the fantastic year for music that has been 2009, German trio Cascada returned in the summer with the first single from the album of the same name, Evacuate The Dancefloor. Moving on from their usual Eurodance sound, this song owed more to Lady GaGa's Just Dance than their previous hits. It was panned by many who said that Cascada were just jumping on the latest bandwagon, with even a rent-a-rapper providing a Colby O'Donis style unnecessary but enjoyable rap two thirds of the way through. It worked though, it provided Cascada with their first UK #1 single, an almost unheard of feat for a Eurodance act that have already had a few top ten hits to achieve and the song was a hit worldwide to, including in the US!!! Easily my favourite single of theirs to date.

71. Jade Ewen - It's My Time - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

So, after a string of absolutely disasterous results for the UK at Eurovision, seeing us languishing in the bottom five nearly every year, much loved songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber was drafted in to write the UK entry with US writer Diane Warren (behind How Do I Live and I Don't Want To Miss A Thing amongst others) and the result was It's My Time, an extremely grand sounding ballad more suited to the Eurovision 40 or 50 years ago!!! The winner of the 'Your Country Needs You' competition to sing the song was Londoner Jade Ewen who delivered a stunning vocal performance every time she performed it. Andrew sat at the piano whilst Jade sung it to hundreds of millions of people across the world, and the result was 5th place, the best result for the UK since 2002 when Jessica Garlick came 3rd!!! As for Jade? She joined the ever revolving door of Sugababes and is currently the sixth member of the three piece band!!! Let's hope that the UK can go even better next year and win because after years of it being assumed that we never do well because nobody likes us, the BBC have finally realised that if we send in decent songs, we can actually do well, hence are taking it all a lot more seriously now!!!

70. Daz Samspon - Teenage Life - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

Kym Marsh or Anthony Costa? What an appealing prospect...as the British media hyped up the fact that one of these acts would be representing the UK at Eurovision in Athens 2006, I was more certain that rapper Daz Sampson, famous for UK hits such as Kung Fu Fighting, Rhinestone Cowboy, Out Of Touch and others, would walk off with the prize. A cheesy ode to schooldays with a charming schoolgirl chant chorus sung by an aging yet nostalgic chav. It was always going to be the UK's favourite. Sure enough it was and the song went to Greece - Daz pranced around in a ridiculous yellow jacket - and we finished near the bottom of the leaderboard as usual, but at the very least it did better than Jemini and Javine and gave Daz another UK top ten hit, the biggest UK Eurovision hit for 7 years!!! My favourite UK entry of this decade, shamefully...

69. Tanel Padar, Dave Benton & 2XL - Everybody - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

2001's Eurovision had some classic songs, but none moreso than the hilariously unpopular winner from Estonia. A bizarre disco song - a lanky white Estonian 20 year old and a large Aruban man in his 50's teamed up with a young vocal harmony group called 2XL and the result was a brilliantly uplifitng song about getting up, dancing and enjoying yourself. Generally regarded as the weakest Eurovision winner of the noughties, it's one of my favourites - it was one of my ANTHEM's of 2001, a brilliant singalong song which was one of the favourites to come last and shocked just about everyone when it stormed to victory ahead of great pop songs from France, Denmark and Greece. Who did I vote for? Estonia of course!!!

68. The Veronicas - 4ever - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

Aah The Veronicas, twin sisters Jessica and Lisa. One of 2009's biggest breakthrough acts in the UK, this song going top 20. Lovely, but it first came out in Australia way back in 2005!!! I first heard of The Veronicas right at the start of 2006 and this was one of my favourite songs of that era. I liked being the only one that knew about them. Even when their second album came out in 2007 led by Untouched of course, nobody outside of Australia and music forums knew who the hell they were. Until this year when they finally broke through, and deservedly so of course, but I can't help thinking that this song, a catchy in-your-face Kelly Clarkson like pop-punk song, would have done a hell of a lot better in 2005 than in 2009...seeing as it was technically from 2005 and sounded quite dated when it finally came out here...

67. Alice Deejay - Will I Ever - 2000

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

My favourite song of the 1990's was Better Off Alone by Alice Deejay, and follow up Back In My Life was probably in my top five 90's songs. So when I saw their album in Virgin for £17 on import in May 2000, I bought it, despite it using up practically all of the money that I had!!! First listen and I loved it, but the undeniable standout and obvious choice for third single was the extremely catchy Will I Ever, much more cheery than the quite dark Better Off Alone and Back In My Life despite a similar lyrical topic. A #6 hit in the UK and their last really successful song, it's a shame as it really was and still is an absolutely excellent pop dance song that I think has been unfairly pushed to the back of people's memories.

66. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

Just over a year after her victorious chart battle with Victoria Beckham where her collaboration with Spiller, Groovejet, topped the charts, Sophie Ellis-Bextor launched her solo career. Slightly removed from the indie of her previous band theaudience, the album, Read My Lips, still had some indie elements to it but the singles were as retro-disco as they come. Cher cover Take Me Home was a good lead single but she excelled with the follow up, Murder On The Dancefloor. A shiny pure pop song complete with a memorable chorus, Sophie's quirky southern English singing accent and a brilliant video, it was easily the highlight of her solo career and a huge hit for her as well, deservedly!!!

80. It used to be a lot higher, in my midway through the decade chart it would have been nearer to the top 20...still love it though

79. I know you prefer the original but this is magical to me

76. agree, These Words is still to come and Wild Horses is just gorgeous. LOVED Silent Movie and the hidden track too!

74. agreed, the instrumental version is excellent too

73. it's just stunning, true old-skool style dance!

72. I'm having trouble loving Fever as a single as much as I did as an amazing album track for some reason  :( my third favourite is a tie between Miracle and What Hurts The Most, both would be in my top 200 of the decade

71. true, and it annoys me when they say, 'oh Jade's the new Sugababe? didn't she flop in Eurovision' and I'm like, 'just because it didn't win it doesn't mean it flopped' :arrr: clearly only a win is good enough for some people! not that it was exactly a huge chart hit like Scooch/Daz Sampson

65. Rihanna - Disturbia - 2008

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

Relaunching her huge Good Girl Gone Bad album in mid 2008, Rihanna scored another #1 single with the gorgeous ballad Take A Bow. However, there was more to come from the Barbados born singer. Disturbia was easily the best of the three additional tracks and my favourite Rihanna single to date, beating the likes of Umbrella, Unfaithful, Russian Roulette and Shut Up And Drive!!! A dark pop song with a dark music video, bridging the gap nicely between the pop of Shut Up & Drive and Don't Stop The Music and the darker urban sounds on new album Rated R. Owing more than a bit to Europop, I always thought that it was quite like Eiffel 65's Blue (Da Ba Dee) although all comparisons disappeared when Flo Rida released Sugar, which literally did sample that song!!!

64. Lily Allen - Smile - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 5 weeks)

Londoner Lily Allen, daughter of comedian Keith Allen, infamously burst onto the scene with the help of MySpace in 2006, bringing pop back into the mainstream. She had a massive charm in her cockney singing accent, (see Kate Nash for further examples). Her debut album was full of ska-influenced summery pop tunes, and Smile, the first major release of Lily's, was one of my three big summer anthems in 2006, which was easily my favourite summer of the decade, it was very feel good for some reason. A great pop song, catchy, excellent production and breathed fresh air into a music scene drowning in throwaway indie tracks. Excellent.

63. D.H.T. - Listen To Your Heart - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 3 weeks)

Sadly a one hit wonder, despite the surprising strength of their debut album of the same name, Belgian duo D.H.T. preceeded Cascada by a year by taking a dance anthem into the US top ten, a country notorious for completely ignoring dance music. I could count on one hand the number of dance songs that have gone top ten in the US in the noughties. Their only hit here then, around the 2005 Christmas period, was a cover of Roxette's Listen To Your Heart. The song was available (and popular) in two versions, both of which received airplay on music channels. The standard 'techno' version, and the ballad version, which was a more stripped back piano ballad cover that really showed off singer Esmee's gorgeous voice. A bit forgotten these days but it really was everywhere at the time, and deservedly so.

62. Rogue Traders - Voodoo Child - 2006

Personal chart peak: #3

Onto the second of my big 2006 summer anthems, Australian dance act Rogue Traders, who were then led by Neighbours actress Natalie Bassingthwaighte (who played Izzy in the soap), launched onto the music scene here with the storming edgy dance song Voodoo Child. A very odd video and a killer chorus made this song one of 2006's defining dance anthems, along with Everytime We Touch and From Paris To Berlin, but unfortunately they were more or less a one hit wonder here with second single, Watching You, making a lowly top 40 appearance for one week. Hardly a surprise, no other song I've heard of theirs even comes close to this.

61. Keri Hilson, Kanye West & Ne-Yo - Knock You Down - 2009

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

Previously really only known for featuring on other people's songs, most notably The Way I Are, Timbaland's #1 hit from 2007, US R&B singer Keri Hilson finally launched her debut album, In A Perfect World in 2009, stepping to the forefront for once. Easily the standout track, and biggest hit from the album was the fantastic Knock You Down. A collaboration with two of the genres finest, the soulful singer Ne-Yo and ubiquitous rapper Kanye West, the song quickly wormed its way into my head to the point that I still always find myself singing/rapping along to every word of the song. Definitely the best urban song of 2009 with a fantastic video (if slightly unbelievable...), a killer chorus from Keri and some excellent verses from Ne-Yo and Kanye. Would it have been a hit without those two? Is Keri destined never to be a proper solo star? who knows, but this song needed to be a collaboration or it just wouldn't have worked.

I have that song too, didn't like it as much as the other two :(
you like quite a few then Phil  a surprising amount of Jo love in this thread it has to be said :o Addicted To Bass came out here in early 2002 but was originally from 1999 or something in Australia and was floating around here for quite some time before the official release!

I'm impressed that you had an MP3 player in 2001! I didn't get my first one until 2004 or something  I always had a Discman before that!

yeah, i grew up with technology lol.

Addicted To Bass is amazing. I'm determind to find out which state the video was filmed in. The little black number plates give away jack $h!te as they covered the state code :drama:

M.A.G.I.C. owes a lot to the music of Justice, particulalrly D.A.N.C.E, but ends up sounding a lot more fun, childish and charming in comparison to the often harsh and dark tones produced by Justice. A brilliant song, showcasing the vocals of the lead singer on the verses, who sounds somehow like a Scandinavian Neil Tennant, and a sampled choir sound on the chorus. It truly is magic!

60. De Nada - Love You Anyway - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

A bit of a forgotten classic, British garage act De Nada had two UK hits, this and Bring It Onto My Love in 2001. Love You Anyway peaked at #15 but was incredibly underrated in my opinion and very radio friendly. I wasn't a massive fan of UK garage overall but De Nada were also very poppy. The song had a sense of sorrow and sadness to it and was a lot more downbeat that most garage party records. It was an odd hybrid. MC Alistair's rap did its job too, particularly the insanely catchy Ski-bi-di-bi-dab-di-bi-dab-di-bi-do chant!!! One of my favourite songs of that summer.

59. Ian Van Dahl - Will I? - 2001

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Following the success of Castles In The Sky, led by guest vocalist Marsha, regular Ian Van Dahl singer, Annemie took over her duties of fronting the Belgian dance act for the second single. Will I was a much more upbeat poppier affair than its predecessor, short and sweet at only two and a half minutes along, but instantly catchy and a worthy successor to Castles...The song was another big hit in the UK, staying in the top ten for quite a few weeks over the busy Christmas 2001 period. I remember being absolutely obsessed with it at the time, and it's still a fantastic Eurodance song.

58. Mariah Carey - We Belong Together - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

After the tragedy that was Glitter and the underwhelming Charmbracelet, Mariah Carey's career was on the rocks to say the least. However, against all odds, she stormed back in 2005 rejuvinated and with one of the best albums of her career, The Emancipation of Mimi. Led by the classic Mariah club song, It's Like That, the second single was her best ballad in a long time, We Belong Together. Classic Mariah with great vocals, a brilliant chorus and effective lyrics, it made Mariah relevant again for the first time in quite a few years. The song was a massive #1 in the US, and almost a #1 here, losing out to 2Pac's Ghetto Gospel by a handful of copies. It is easily her defining moment of the noughties though, and no doubt success she hopes to emulate again in the very near future.

57. Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry - 2007

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Stacey Ferguson turned around the fortunes of the commercially faltering Black Eyed Peas. Affectionately known as Fergie, she breathed new life into the experimental electro/hip-hop group who later became famous for their pop smashes Where Is The Love and Shut Up. Fergie is of course now one quarter of the biggest act in the world, as in 2009 Black Eyed Peas' status has elevated to new levels, spending most of the year at #1 in the US, and yo-yoing to and from #1 with three singles in the UK. However, I was not a fan of Fergie's first couple of solo singles, although Glamourous was an improvement on London Bridge. However, third single, Big Girls Don't Cry, won me over on first listen. A gorgeous ballad showcasing off her really quite excellent voice with a fantastic chorus and sentiment. Probably one of the most overplayed songs on the radio in the last two years but it deserves it.

56. Daniel Powter - Bad Day - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Canadian singer/songwriter Daniel Powter would have been the star of summer 2005 if not for his English counterpart James Blunt, whose You're Beautiful always seemed to be one step ahead of Daniel's Bad Day. Between them, they created probably two of my favourite songs of summer 2005, a time period that saw a sudden surge in great music after a largely terrible two years between summer 2003 and summer 2005. A fantastic piano ballad about something that we can all relate to, the song was oddly uplifting at the same time, particularly if listening whilst watching the video. Only a #2 hit here because of James Blunt, it was nevertheless one of the defining European anthems of 2005 and went on to top the US charts in 2006. Shame Daniel was a one hit wonder because both of his albums were actually surprisingly good!!!

55. Charlotte Perrelli - Hero - 2008

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

Easily my favourite Swedish Eurovision entry of the noughties, 1999 winner Charlotte Nilsson had since married and changed her name to Perrelli (and since changed it back to Nilsson...). She returned to Melodifestivalen in 2008 and stormed to victory in the jury voting but came second to Sanna Nielsen's gorgeous Empty Room in the public televoting. The power of the jury was enough to send this schlager classic to Serbia 2008 and Charlotte, aided by the worst presentation of a song known to man (black and white through the first verse? horrendous makeup that made her look like catwoman) helped the song to fail to reach the final on televoting (again!) and once again relied on the juries to take her to the final, where she flopped in at 18th. Shame, because as generic and typically Swedish as it was, it is an incredibly strong pop song.

54. Nerina Pallot - Everybody's Gone To War - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 4 weeks)

I recall first hearing this song at work a number of times during 2005, when I just assumed it was a Sheryl Crow track - I loved it, but dismissed looking further into it. So when the following year I heard that it was the comeback single by Nerina Pallot, who I had had a brief interest in circa 2001 and her debut album, Dear Frustrated Superstar, I was intrigued, and bought her album, Fires, which had come out in 2005, straight away. The album was re-released soon after, and the songs were given a fresh lick of paint to make them more commercial sounding, but both versions of the album are great. A hugely underrated British talent, Nerina is incredibly well spoken and charming, I even saw her live in a church in Brighton once!!! This song had a brilliant supermarket wars video where she looked very good, not too dissimilar from Jennifer Love Hewitt in face!!! A great, powerful pop song which should have been a far bigger hit.

53. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone - 2005

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

I didn't have a great interest in Kelly Clarkson's first few singles to be honest but in early 2005, I first heard her new single, Since U Been Gone, and I was blown away to say the least. Ushering in a the pop-rock boom that has been so prevalent in the last five years, the 2002 American Idol winner went onto have her biggest hit (at that point) in the UK with this song and deservedly so. A fantastic sing-a-long track, absolutely amazing to watch live in concert (I've seen her twice!) - it also led the Breakaway album, which I shall go into more when it features in my top 50 albums of the decade countdown. Since U Been Gone is one of the decade's defining pop songs.

52. Carrie Underwood - Jesus Take The Wheel - 2006

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 2 weeks)

Frome one American Idol winner to another, but there is still one more to come!!! Coutnry singer Carrie Underwood launched to fame when she won the 2005 competition, and has been the biggest selling act to have come out of the competition in the US, despite oddly never being launched anywhere else. The UK success of Taylor Swift's Love Story surely suggests that Before He Cheats could have been a huge Shania Twain style pop-country hit here!?! Jesus Take The Wheel, a ballad about a girl looking to Jesus whilst trying to get home safely to her family for Christmas, was easily the highlight of an incredible debut album. A powerful message and a melodic chorus which showcased Carrie's strong vocals brilliantly without being too preachy.

51. Groove Armada feat Mutya - Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control) - 2007

Personal chart peak: #1 (for 1 week)

Founding member Mutya Buena left the Sugbabes in late 2005 and took a break before launching into her solo career in 2007. Debut solo single, Real Girl, which sampled Lenny Kravitz, was nice enough and a huge hit, but the general feeling and hype was that the stunning electro pop song Song 4 Mutya, a collaboration with dance act Groove Armada, which first surfaced in early 2007 to the amazement of just about everyone who heard it, would be her biggest hit and a massive #1 in summer 2007. Unfortunately, despite extensive airplay the song didn't connect with the public quite as well as hoped, thanks largely to one of the worst, cheapest looking music videos of the decade, and the song limped up to a #8 peak despite easily being one of the highlights of 2007. For me, it's better than any Sugababes single, and shows the true potential that Mutya, who was always my favourite Sugababe vocally, has, that is unlikely to be seen again judging by her more recent solo work.
