Hi Charli,

Which artists sing "Sleigh Ride" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday"?

And I guess you mean "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Slade!

Thanks for posting!

Ronald

i ran a thread last crimbo... 'when is a crimbo song not a crimbo song'... 'stop the cavalry' was the inspiration. its an anti - war song more then a crimbo song, it only qualifies to be used at crimbo because it mentions crimbo , but that was an irony, not a celebration.

1 Mike Oldfield - In Dulce Jubilo

2 Johnny Mathis - When a Child is Born

3 Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas

4 Jona Lewie - Stop the Cavalry

5 David Bowie & Bing Crosby - Little Drummer Boy / Peace on Earth

It's more of a Christmas song than 'The Power of Love', 'Mr Blobby' or '2 Become 1' which always get dragged out this time of year by virtue of their release dates in previous years. I think the salvation army brass gave 'Stop the Cavalry' an extra Christmas vibe. There aren't really that many true Xmas songs when you think about it...some only make bare reference like Paul McCartney's 'Pipes of Peace' and The Farm's 'All Together Now' which both chose the WW1 Christmas truce as themes but aren't "christmassy" in sound per se.

only just, and i wouldnt call them crimbo songs at all. i dont agree that the brass gives it a crimbo vibe, to me it reinforces the military aspect of the track.

Stop The Cavalry is always the one which provokes most debate because it mentions Christmas although, as you say, it's more of a reference to the "It'll all be over by Christmas" attitude. I wouldn't regard The Power Of Love or Stay Another Day as Christmas songs at there is no mention of Christmas in the song; they just had videos with a Christmas / winter theme.

Good call. Here is mine.

1 The Waitresses - Xmas Wrapping

2 Pretenders - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

3 Pogues/Kirst McCall - Fairytale Of New York

4 Pretenders - 2000 Miles

5 Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

I doubt most of these won't get a luck in, but I get so fed up with the usual suspects a la Wham, Slade, Wizard - they make me hate christmas!!

I am judging this purely on artistic merit as opposed to the artist themselves as 2 of them should not belong in this list but they both made cracking songs

1. Chuck Berry - Run Run Rudolph

2. Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry

3. Gary Glitter - Rock And Roll Christmas

4. Bryan Adams - Run Run Rudolph

5. Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

I have really gone off Fairytale Of New York now, I don't know if I am bored with it having heard it so many times or what but the song just makes me want to turn it off now :o
