November 30, 200915 yr (Like this year's X-Factor) a poor list compared to last year where any of that Top 3 is better than the best Sports Personality this Year. As a big F1 fan I don't think Jenson Button deserves to win because he had the best car by far, and certainly was not the best British driver, let alone the best driver in F1 in the 2009 season. For me Jessica Ennis deserves the victory for her heptathlon exploits. But the snubbing of Phil "The Power" Taylor from the shortlist who took his 14th World title this year; and won 8 of the 11 major darts tournaments is nothing short of disgusting. His 110.94 three-dart average is the highest ever recorded in a World final. While his match record this year is 190-4-11, with prize money of £769,725. This is also a new record for money earned during a calendar year. He has won 36 of his last 44 tournaments. That is domination that even Tiger Woods at his peak in his sport could only dream of.

Agreed, its a travesty Taylor has not won the award before I would also have nominated Harry Redknapp, to turn a team around from 4 points in 8 games and the depths of despair to nearly taking them into Europe and then taking them into the current Top 3 is a great achievement And if Giggs who hardly played any games is chosen so should Jermaine Defoe, to overcome the shock of his brother's murder to be England's leading goalscorer for club and country is again great Edited November 30, 200915 yr by B.A Baracus
November 30, 200915 yr Well we had Olympics last year, where we did amazingly. So is it really a surprise that it isn't as good this year?
December 1, 200915 yr As long as the winner isn't Jenson i'll be happy. Still pissed off that prick is WC. Not quite as pissed of as i am about Hamilton's WC win likes..........
December 1, 200915 yr 1. Jessica Ennis - The face of London 2012! I remember watching her win and she'd deserve this honour. 2. Ryan Giggs - At the age of 36 he's STILL one of the best players in the Premier League. Whenever he's called upon he always makes a HUGE difference and he plays in the big games when he's needed i.e. Enough to earn him a deserved 11th Premier League title medal :D Ten times the player Defoe will ever be and he'll be playing for at least another two years. 3. Jenson Button - I always believed he'd win the World Championship someday and he delivered, could have done it more convincingly however.

As far as I'm concerned, until F1 cars are all the same (which takes away half of the sport) then I don't think simply being world champion is enough - Button needed to absolutely destroy the opposition, faster car or not, not just simply win. I suspect he'll pick up the trophy though, rather sadly - must admit I wanted Hamilton in there to split the vote but he was $h!t this year - ahead of greater athletes. At least it won't be as bad as 1992 when Nigel Mansell kept Linford Christie and Sally Gunnell from the trophy - that was madness. Although Jess Ennis and Philips Idowu became world champs in athletics, it simply doesn't have the same impact as winning at the Olympics and I'll be surprised to see either of them win it. Giggs deserves recognition for being a model professional, but he didn't achieve enough on a personal level this year...that said, if Beckham and Owen can win it simply for scoring one-off goals then it'd be deserved. David Haye did well to win a world championship and should be in the top 3 but he needs to do more before picking up this award.
December 1, 200915 yr I'll be backing Jenson Button all the way. Absolutely dominated the start of the season - Not simply through having the best car but through skill, you must remember he was not the only driver in a Brawn this season! Drives like Bahrain where he pulled a beautiful move on Hamilton and Monaco where he was totally dominant throughout on a circuit where the car you're in probably matters least. He wasn't flawless but over an entire season I don't think anyone could be, but then from Italy onwards he was once again quite phenominal in a car which was obviously not the fastest. Go back and watch the Brazilian GP and tell me he doesn't deserve to be world champion!
December 1, 200915 yr Button was destroyed by Barrichello in the 2nd half of the season in the same car, Button winning this award would be a joke, a chimp could win in a dominant car but the real test of a driver is when the car is no longer dominating and Button was mediocre then, much as I hate saying this Hamilton was in a different league to Button in 2009 as a driver Brawn deserves team of the year but Button being sports personality of the year would be a joke

Brawn GP deserve the team award, any other result would be a travesty. In stark contrast Jenson Button's continuous mistakes in the second half of the season in qualification against the experienced but never great Barrichello showed that he is not even close to being one of the all-time British F1 greats (Stirling Moss; Jim Clark; Jackie Stewart; Nigel Mansell & Graham Hill .... and if he had not done enough before this season what Lewis Hamilton achieved in a dog of a car this season is certainly further evidence that in two or three more seasons he will be worthy of being added to that list). Whilst actions speak louder than words and the very fact that he got dropped by his winning team for 2010 speaks volumes... As what Jenson Button has proved time and again in a near decade in F1 is that he is a consistent driver if his car is in the "sweet spot"; but he is no good at dragging results out of a dog of a car where the car is suffering from an imbalance of downforce or steering like the recent F1 greats Alonso; Hamilton & Raikkonen can and have done time and time again.
December 2, 200915 yr I would also have nominated Harry Redknapp, to turn a team around from 4 points in 8 games and the depths of despair to nearly taking them into Europe and then taking them into the current Top 3 is a great achievement I think you have to be an active sportsman/woman to be nominated don't you? I can't remember a coach/manager ever winning it or being named as a contender. Even the fact that he has far more personality than some of the nominations can't allow him to get round the rules.
December 4, 200915 yr I vote for Ryan Giggs. I think the same as @Grandwicky. ;) Personally, I think his inclusion on the list is utterly bizarre. To be eligible, at the very least he should be the best British footballer of the year. Yet going by the long running (over 50 Years) and far more credible Ballon d'Or (European Footballer Of The Year), he is not even the top British player playing for Manchester United! British Players Results: 1 Lionel Messi (Argentina, Barcelona), 473 points 8 Wayne Rooney (England, Manchester United), 35 10 Steven Gerrard (England, Liverpool), 32 14 Ryan Giggs (Wales, Manchester United), 11 21= Frank Lampard (England, Chelsea), 5 26= John Terry (England, Chelsea), 2
December 13, 200915 yr Sod X-Factor. I'm watching this. So far: SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD: The Young Sports Personality of the Year goes to Tom Daley. SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD: The Helen Rollason award goes to Major Phil Packer. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_rad...ear/8409139.stm
December 13, 200915 yr SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD: The special award goes to Eddie Izzard. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_rad...ear/8406078.stm SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD: The Sports Unsung Hero award goes to Doreen Adcock http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_rad...ear/8409171.stm
December 13, 200915 yr Team Of The Year: Goes to the English Cricket Team. In my opinion Brawn GP were robbed; but then gain making dumping the driver after he won the F1 title has cost them the good will.
December 13, 200915 yr Manager/Coach of The Year: Goes to Fabio Capello. Strewth the public voting on this are as random as those who vote on the X-Factor. Again I think Ross Brawn should have run away with this award this year.
December 13, 200915 yr SPORTS PERSONALITY AWARD: The Lifetime Achievement award goes to Seve Ballesteros http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_rad...ear/8405808.stm
