December 11, 200916 yr You cannot possibly tell whose album will have long term sales and I bet it will not be JLS.Alex and Leona have released 1 song this year while JLS have been building their fanbase steadily throughout the year after 2 singles.Badboys was never going to be an album selling song that is why there will be at least 4 more singles released from Overcome.Plus based on figures for who is doing better on sales for 2 singles and 1 album which Alex and JLS have both released Alex has sold over 2 milllion units while JLS are around over 1 million.Their was clearly a huge niche in the market for a boyband and good on JLS for filling it but lets not kid ourselves. Boybands do not have a long shelf life they will find it hard to move beyond a teen girl market. There are so many things wrong with this post. 1st one i guess westlife and take that don't have a long shelf life then, 2nd JLS are #4 in the album chart still, alex and leona are falling fast. 3rd it is album sales that count and JLS have shown, despite what we were all thinking, they are actually album sellers rather than singles, so why would this change anytime soon. where as alex and cheryl have sold oodles of singles but it isn't translating into massive album sales which is what matters. right now JLS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> leona, alex and cheryl. i didn't expect them to be but the sales speak for themselves this xmas.
December 11, 200916 yr HMV were meant to be re-stocking Peter Kay yesturday, I wonder how he got on? Thats the only factor that stops Gaga from getting top spot.

Agree with everything in your post, except for the last paragraph which needs to take into account the context of JLS being the current winners and the "shiny new thing", which Leona isn't. A more apt comparison would be to include Leona's BL/Spirit era with the other 3.
December 11, 200916 yr Looks like the GaGa woman is going to break the run of 100k sellers at the top this week.. Well she's gaining 10k a day currently, so say 70k?

JLS didn't win :P but i mean this xmas jls, leona, cheryl, alex all were releasing albums around the same time, were all on x-factor and are all targetting a similar demographic and to my shock it seems jls will end up with the biggest sales of them. I would never have believed that a few months ago, and still im amazed how well they are holding up.

I agree you have to compare like for like and as yet none of the artists mentioned have proved whether they will have any longevity. JLS are doing marvellously well with their debut & have surprised everyone but as Leona has shown one huge seller doesn't guarantee the next will be as successul. The hard work starts after the first album & what choices the artists make will determine whether they stick around.

You just have to look at every single X Factor winner's first album sales ->second and the same thing is painted over and over - sales drop by at least 50% (both first week and last) - Shayne Ward (52% drop) and Leona Lewis (57% drop) have been the smallest - most are far bigger - e.g. Rhydian 67% drop, Andy Abraham 86% drop. In this context, the comparison of JLS, Alex and Cheryl to Leona is almsot meaningless. That takes nothing away from JLS (or Alex, or Cheryl for that matter) who are doing extremely well - particularly JLS who have way surpassed what I thought they would ever achieve when they were on the show.

Didn't apply with Pop Idol. Will Young's 2nd & 3rd albums both outsold his debut.
December 11, 200916 yr Didn't apply with Pop Idol. Will Young's 2nd & 3rd albums both outsold his debut. So its just an X Factor thing then?
December 11, 200916 yr So its just an X Factor thing then? No it's a talent and taking control of your own music and being a 'real artist' thing :)
December 11, 200916 yr Can someone please explain to me how The Sats are only #36 after being in the top 20 on iTunes for the last 2 days and top 30 all week. Yet their midweek has been #36 for the last 3 days. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Shakira is also out on download only and she's been one place behind The Sats in every midweek this week but The Sats have been FAR ahead of her on iTunes the whole week!
December 11, 200916 yr No it's a talent and taking control of your own music and being a 'real artist' thing :) Yes, establishing some credibility by ditching Simon Cowell and moving on.
December 11, 200916 yr He was on Pop Idol as well  But he had nothing at all to do with Will's career after his debut album. Thank goodness, looking at the track record of those who stuck with him. Edited December 11, 200916 yr by truly talented
December 11, 200916 yr Yes album sales count, long term album sales. A few weeks of Alex,JLS and Leona tell us nothing of who will stay the course and have the biggest sales come next year-FACT.Take That have throughout their career had good songs which has enabled them to live on. I am not sure why you are bringing Westlife into this a string of hit covers does not count.Again I am not taking anything away from JLS they have been marketed well but dont try and pretend that their album sales would have been so high without 5 different album covers for frenzied teen girl fans to lap up.
December 11, 200916 yr Author l The "shiny new thing" The next "shiny new thing" this time next year will be the runner up of this year's X-Factor, hopefully Stacey Solomon, as I can see Joe McElderry winning the contest this weekend or vice versa ;)

The Sats have no physicals, and its the only the album track that is getting downloaded, hence why the position they are at.
December 11, 200916 yr Author oooh I have some sales for the top 3 singles and albums, "goes and adds"
