However if there was one ... I think it should be a Kirsty McColl song - preferably her cover of The Kinks' Days or the Billy Bragg song 'New England'.

I agree, Britain should celebrate the life of one of its most talented musicians - ever. Plus, as justice still hasn't been done for this wonderful lady, and, following the very sad statement underneath, looks very unlikely ever to be resolved, I think a number one commemorating the 10 years since her death would be extremely fitting.

Justice for Kirsty Campaign

5 December 2009

The committee which has led the fight to achieve justice for Kirsty MacColl has agreed to cease campaigning. It will disband and stop collecting money to fund its activities. The remaining funds will be distributed to charities of which Kirsty would have approved.

The committee recently received news that the Mexican authorities have closed their case file on Kirsty’s death, and regard this as the end of the matter. They said they had exhausted all avenues of investigation and taken statements and affidavits from many witnesses. None of these had led to further information as to who may have been implicated, apart from the boat hand Cen Yam, who had already been convicted of causing the accident.

Once the case was closed there was virtually nothing left for the committee to campaign for. We are not able to bring any more pressure on the Mexicans than we have achieved already.

After Kirsty’s tragic death in Cozumel, Mexico in December 2000, her mother, Jean MacColl, launched the Justice for Kirsty campaign. Its primary purpose was to establish whether the Mexican judicial system had investigated the case sufficiently thoroughly for Kirsty’s family, friends and fans to accept that justice had been done in accounting for her untimely death. It did so by rallying the outrage and anger at the accident, and raised funds to allow Jean and the committee to pay for lawyers, and to approach governments at the highest level.

The committee was successful in achieving most of its aims. The clumsy cover-up that followed the accident was exposed, and pressure from the campaign and the British government compelled the Mexican authorities to re-open their enquiries. In the unstable circumstances in Mexico in recent years, it is unlikely that any more could be achieved: the case has been re-examined very thoroughly.

Jean intends to continue working in a personal capacity to raise public awareness of the key issues in the campaign: committee members have pledged their informal support for her efforts. She wishes to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to helping her and the campaign. The support of The Pogues and Billy Bragg have been especially important in increasing the public profile of the campaign.

The two charities receiving the remaining campaign funds are:

• Casa Alianza Mexico, which provides care and rehabilitation for homeless children and others at risk in Mexico

• Cuba Music Solidarity, which Kirsty had supported enthusiastically.

NO f***ING CAMPAIGN.

Here's a better idea - Don't release X Factor on xmas, in January instead like Fame Academy/Pop Idol did and have songs sell on the back of being a fantastic song.

We could've actually had Leona Lewis' 'Run' and Lady GaGa's 'Bad Romance' if it wasn't for campaigns/X Factor.

I WOULD vote for NO campaign at all!! is this what it's come to!??!
No more campaigns! Seriously, if there's a Xmas campaign each year, then what makes us different to Simon Cowell?

'Simon says', would be my choice :)

Number 2, May 1968.

God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols. Was politically kept from being Number 1 in 1977 and would be a perfect anti-Simon song
Other - Fairytale of New York please! It would also be a celebration for Kirsty who next year would have died 10 years ago - and the annervsary would be on a sunday when the chart is announced. I can't think of anything better than to have Fairytale of New York as christmas #1 next year

I would go for Kosheen - Catch from 2001, make it a dance music song next time

A campaign to get Fairytale Of New York a Number #01 status is much needed.
Freedom '90 by GM is legendary. I would love for a Xmas song to be #1 though. Last Christmas, FONY or AIWFCIY would be amazing. Get Relax by FGTH to #1

I totally agree, so let's give Kirsty a posthumous belated 50th birthday present of her most prophetic song (and her personal favourite that she wrote) unlike the Pogues penned Fairytale; the Ray Davies penned Days; or the Billy Bragg penned New England which has a wintery feel to the music and lyrics ......

Your name froze on the winter air

An empty bench in soho square

Forgotten now I turn away

Just save me for a rainy day

But don't be sorry

I don't want to hear it baby

My feet froze in the winter chill

I knew I'd probably get ill

But I was praying we could fill

An empty bench and still

You're so sorry

But I don't want your pity baby

It's all yours now please don't tease

The pigeons shiver in the naked trees

And I'll do anything but

Please don't hurt me

Just kiss me quick

'cos it's my birthday

And I feel so small

I don't know why

But no I'm not too old to cry

An empty bench in soho square

If you'd have come you'd have found me there

But you never did 'cos you don't care

And I'm so sorry baby

I don't mind loneliness too much

But when I met you I was touched

And that was good enough for me

But do we always have to be sorry

Why can't we just be happy baby?

One day you'll be waiting there

No empty bench in soho square

And we'll dance around like we don't care

And I'll be much too old to cry

And you'll kiss me quick in case I die

Before my birthday

One day you'll be waving there

No empty bench in soho square

No I don't know the reason why

I'll love you till the day I die

But one day you'll be waiting there

Come summertime in soho square

And I'll be painting stars up in the sky

Before I get too old to cry

Before my birthday

I hope I see those pigeons fly

Before my birthday

In soho square on my birthday

The perfect n. 1 XMAS song could be People Have The Power by Patty Smith aka the grandmother of Marina and the diamonds
Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

 let's rickroll simon cowell!

I vote for an original song by an independent band or artist. But not necessarily a 'christmas' one.
