December 21, 200915 yr Wow, I love your list. Your #1 album is the same as mine. I'll post my list a little later on.
December 22, 200915 yr Hmm...I can't say I've got a huge list of R&B albums to pick from, I haven't listened to many albums this year that weren't by artists I already knew. http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/PRERELCDKERI.JPG 01. Keri Hilson - In A Perfect World... Pretty much defines grower. On first listen I was like "ehh...it's ok, if a little extra on the bland songs" but Jonjo persuaded me to give it a try. Now it's my favourite album of the year. "Make Love" is the only song I'm not hot on, while "Knock You Down", "Turnin Me On", "Alienated", "Tell Him The Truth" and "Get Your Money Up" are up there in my songs of the year. http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/HURRCD1.JPG 02. Beverley Knight - 100% A bit of a UK only one here, but check her out if you don't know her and love a powerful soul voice. While this isn't as good as her "Affirmation" album, it's still great. "Beautiful Night" is fighting to become my favourite song of the year, while "Soul Survivor" with Chaka Khan is a huge anthem. "Square Peg" is also a bit of an outcasts anthem. http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/2715927.JPG 03. Mariah Carey - Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel No one was more disappointed to hear Mariah was doing a personal record, with songs like "H.A.T.E.U.", but it was a pleasant surprise in the end. While it's only got about three suitable singles on it, it's one of my favourite Mariah albums. The prologue track still gives me chills. So much emotion and vengeance. "Standing O", "Candy Bling", "Up Out My Face" and "It's A Wrap" are all amazing too. UOMF having one of the lines of the year, the one about Lego and Harvard graduates. http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/CAP97259.2.JPG 04. LeToya - Lady Love This album could possibly be cut a track or two short but it's pretty solid. I've never given LeToya a chance before but "She Ain't Got..." grabbed my attention. Then I realised, like Estelle's 2008 effort, the album was completely different to the single that grabbed me. But, like Estelle again, the album massively grew on me. It sounds like a proper R&B effort, with little of this Pop crossover stuff which is so prominent and diluting the scene lately. http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/88697313902.JPG 05. Ciara - Fantasy Ride I was struggling to find a fifth album, but this was a pretty good effort by Ciara. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but she's amazing when she's on. Of course, the two singles were great, but I absolutely ADORE "I Don't Remember". Looking back, it's only "Like A Surgeon", "Never Ever" and "Lover's Thing" that I'm not fussed with. Two of those were US singles, no wonder it flopped. Special mentions go to Jazmine Sullivan and Brandy, who were either late December or early 2009 discoveries for me, but were released in 2008. I'd include Whitney, but she's posted in the Pop forum on here. I also expect Alicia Keys will be much like Brandy's album for me, something I don't get until Christmas, but I'll end up obsessed with it for the rest of the year and January 2010.
December 22, 200915 yr Author Thanks ACC! Glad I can share my love for the Maxwell album with someone ;) Really curious to see your list! Interesting list Aaron with a lot of albums I almost bought. Not the biggest 'In a perfect word' fan. It has some good moments but if I'm honest I expected a lot more.. Ow, and I totally missed Ciara with 'Work'..! *Corrects single top 10*
December 22, 200915 yr Thanks ACC! Glad I can share my love for the Maxwell album with someone wink.gif Really curious to see your list! Yeah, it's a shame he's not had more mainstream success. His U.S. album sales speak for themselves though, as well as the success of his singles on the R&B format. Anyway, here goes: #1: "BLACKsummers’night" Maxwell - A real emotive record, full of smooth tracks that proved waiting for years and years was well worth it. "Pretty Wings" & "Fistful of Tears" are my stand-out tracks, although I can listen to the album in full without being overcome by boredom. It doesn't follow the current trend of contemporary R&B and has been a huge success without having major support from Pop radio. #2: "The Element of Freedom" Alicia Keys - I'm not sure this will ever overtake "Diary" as my favourite AK album, but it's so soulful, and shows somewhat of an evolution to her sound. So many great, soulful tunes, showcasing her phenomenal songwriting talents. "Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)" is so soothing, with beautiful, chill-out production. I think it may be my favourite Alicia track... ever. #3: "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" Mariah Carey - As an album, it's very cohesive. Produced by The-Dream & Tricky Stewart, they provided some hot, R&B backing tracks for her sultry voice. The vocal layers throughout the record are to die for! It's a mature effort, even if it's tanking commercially. "H.A.T.E.U." is now a Mariah classic, in my opinion. Unbleievable melody, with one of the best bridges ever constructed. #4: "Love vs. Money" The-Dream - His voice may be lacking, but I'm such a fan of his production and trashy lyrics (LOL). Like "Memoirs", it's a cohesive album that is consistent throughout. Full of hooks, and smooth slow jams, it's like a continuation from "Love Hate". "Rockin' That $h!t", "Walkin' on the Moon" & "Right Side of My Brain" are the clear winners. #5: "The Ectastic" Mos Def - Another comeback album that is just killer. The beats & lyrics make it a record that's liberating. Way better than "True Magic", released back in 2006. The styles differ throughout the album; from reggae to dance, there's so much offered. "Life in Marvelous Times" is my favourite track, with killer production and an unbelievable flow. I'm going to have to think harder to compile a list of my top songs. There's so many to choose from, and I don't know where to start! I'll come back to this later...
December 24, 200915 yr Author Good chart, though I'm not a fan of Mariah :P! And great #1 :D He did quite nice with this album Stateside (reaching #1 and selling over 700k). Sadly in the rest of the world the album was quite a flop (only reached top 40 here in Holland) :( Ow, and the Dream album sounds interesting! Worth the buy? Curious to see your fav. songs of this year!
December 27, 200915 yr I can't believe I forgot "Man on the Moon: The End of Day"! It'd probably be my #2 as it's so consistent. The album has a great sound with such range. Oh, The-Dream's album is great if you can deal with some trashy lyrics, LOL. The album is full of hot, smooth production and great melodies. A few sex jams, too. Anyway, here's my top 20 R&B/Hip Hop songs of 2009: #1: "Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)" Alicia Keys #2: "Pretty Wings" Maxwell #3: "H.A.T.E.U." Mariah Carey #4: "Life in Marvelous Times" Mos Def #5: "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart" Alicia Keys #6: "Soundtrack 2 My Life" Kid CuDi #7: "Daddy's Home (Hey Daddy)" Usher featuring Plies #8: "Best I Ever Had" Drake #9: "Fistful of Tears" Maxwell #10: "Kill Bill" Electrik Red #11: "Quiet Dog Bite Hard" Mos Def #12: "Hard" Rihanna featuring Young Jeezy #13: "Bad Habits" Maxwell #14: "Slow Dance" Keri Hilson #15: "I Invented Sex" Trey Songz featuring Drake #16: "Walkin' on the Moon" The-Dream featuring Kanye West #17: "BedRock" Young Money #18: "Empire State of Mind" Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys #19: "How It Was Supposed to Be" Ryan Leslie #20: "My World" Kid CuDi featuring Billy Craven
December 28, 200915 yr The-Dream's albuym is brilliant! I was very pleasently surprised at just how good it was! But I think I have the most obvious favourites of this year :heehee:
December 28, 200915 yr My fave RNB albums: Keri Hilson - In A Perfect World - this is perfect rnb album i really like every song and production. Whitney Houston - I Look To You - great comeback album, she suprise me a lot. Ciara - Fantasy Ride -another perfect rnb album, apart from love sex magic, there is so many great songs. Alicia Keys - The Element of Freedom - another fresh album, try sleeping & love is blind is somethin incredible, best works of alicia imo. Amerie - In love And War - great album, higher is my fave song, so bad it's flopped. Beverley Knight - 100% - very good album, but not amazing like the others. LeToya - Lady Love - another flop album :( Lazy is AMAZING song! Elektrik Red - How To Be Lady Vol. 1 - this is hooot WFK is very very good song, others are very good too. Mariah Carey - Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel - biggest dissapontet for me. Obssesed i IWTKWLI are the best song, so so lame :( Chris Brown - Grafiti - a suprise for me, very good album, so many great tracks there, can choose fave song because almost every song is great.
December 28, 200915 yr Do JLS count? :kink: [/flopRnBfan] They're kinda RnB, I'd have Rihanna at the top though. Edited December 28, 200915 yr by Bad Robmance
December 28, 200915 yr Author Some good tracks in there AAC! Though BH didn't work for me as a single if I'm honest. Ow, and I totally forgot to chart Ryan Leslie myself :o And thats my biggest problem with the Dream ;) Have a bit of love/hate relation with his music. Maybe I should check the whole album out and decide wich way it's going to be! Please post your chart Jonjo! Not that obvious to me, I do have a feeling that miss Keri wil end up very high :teresa: Good to see your chart Nick! Is the Elektric Red c.d. worth the buy? I forgot about them after I couldn't find the album here. Wow for Mary already there! Will check her out this week. If you consider them r'n'b yourself, why not BR? For me they are more pop though.

Yeah, maybe you should preview a few tracks before buying The-Dream's latest record? Electrik Red's "How to Be a Lady: Vol. 1" is killer. It would've made my top 10 best albums for sure. Production is hot, but again as the record is solely produced by The-Dream & Tricky Stewart, it's full of trashy "LOL" moment lyrics (in a good way, of course). Mary's "Stronger withEach Tear" is a bit of a disappointment for me. She murders it on "Said & Done" and "Kitchen", though. I'd like to see Jonjo's list too, actually. I wouldn't call JLS R&B. Well, I suppose their R&B influenced pop, but whatever, there's not much to differenciate between genres nowadays.
December 29, 200915 yr I'm not sure if JLS are RnB either, but some of the songs on the album are very 'Taio Cruz' who I consider to be RnB.
December 29, 200915 yr Rated R, In A Perfect World and The Element Of Freedom are my top 3 of the genre from this year Mariah's comeback was DIRE! Her worst album since Glitter  I think I'd even rather listen to that :kink:
December 29, 200915 yr Mariah's comeback was DIRE! Her worst album since Glitter  I think I'd even rather listen to that :kink: No way! :o I find it one of her best. I'm convinced that Mariah fans who didn't like it just didn't give it enough time. Especially if they also liked "Rated R"! Both are personal albums, with little in the way of commercial tracks, but I find Mariah's much stronger. Mostly because I prefer whispery personal-Mariah to Rihanna's "and I sound like a sheep bleating" (hands off, Chris Moyles!) ballad vocals. "Standing O", "Betcha Gon' Know", "Up Out My Face" and "Obsessed" are some of my favourite Mariah tracks this decade and there's about six or seven other tracks on this album that I love.
December 29, 200915 yr http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/HURRCD1.JPG 1. Beverley Knight - 100% 2. Mariah Carey - Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel 3. Rihanna - Rated R 4. Alicia Keys - The Element Of Freedom 5. Keri Hilson - In A Perfect World...
December 30, 200915 yr Author I'm going to Amsterdam tomorrow so hopefully I can find the Dream/ER. Ow, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of MOAOA ;) Glad too see that most of you like the new AK! Been playing the album LOTS and really love it!
