Posted December 30, 200915 yr SNOW PATROL’S ‘CHASING CARS’ MOST PLAYED AND USED SONG OF THE NOUGHTIES 30 December 2009 As the Noughties draws to its end, we can reveal that ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol can be named as the most played and used song of the last decade. The hit, which peaked at number 6 in the UK charts when it was released in July 2006, has continued to receive extensive use on UK radio, television, online broadcasts and in public since its release. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol thinks he knows the secret to ‘Chasing Cars’ success when he said in an interview earlier in the year, “I think that the song has worked because it has an emotion that people can relate to.” Songs released in 2006 take the second and third spots with Take That’s ‘Shine’ at two and ‘I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’’ by Scissors Sisters at three. Take That are the only act to have two songs in the top ten with ‘Rule The World’ at number 6 though Scissor Sisters have ‘Filthy/Gorgeous’ at number 30. A number of other artists have two entries and these include The Feeling, Kaiser Chiefs, Pink and Stereophonics. Whilst the majority of the songs were released in the noughties, there is proof that timeless songs are indeed timeless with no fewer than eleven tracks released from previous decades featuring in the Top 50 chart. The highest entry comes from Thin Lizzy (1976) with ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ which is number 12 and the oldest is Aretha Franklin’s ‘I Say A Little Prayer’ released in 1968 at number 50. 2007 is the ‘latest’ year for entries with Sugababes (‘About You Now’), Duffy (‘Mercy’) and Mark Ronson (‘Valerie’) appearing in the chart. PPL compiled the top 50 tracks of the decade based on the number of plays on UK radio, television, online and in public. It was put together by the Music Reporting Department who processed over twenty billion seconds of data to compile the chart. Our Head of Music Reporting, Tim Silver commented, “The noughties has been a decade for great new music and which has been listened to by ever growing numbers of people. Just as they love listening to new music, there will also always be a place for golden oldies, evident in our top 50. As we move into the next decade it will be interesting to see how music trends change as well as consumption patterns, and we will accurately capture the data we receive from all our licensees to see how media and usage develops.” The Top 50 most played and used song of the last decade is as follows: 1 CHASING CARS SNOW PATROL 2006 2 SHINE TAKE THAT 2006 3 I DON'T FEEL LIKE DANCIN' SCISSOR SISTERS 2006 4 LOVE IT WHEN YOU CALL THE FEELING 2005 5 ABOUT YOU NOW SUGABABES 2007 6 RULE THE WORLD TAKE THAT 2007 7 YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL JAMES BLUNT 2004 8 I PREDICT A RIOT KAISER CHIEFS 2004 9 CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD KYLIE MINOGUE 2001 10 CRAZY GNARLS BARKLEY 2006 11 AMERICA RAZORLIGHT 2006 12 THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN THIN LIZZY 1976 13 THE SWEET ESCAPE GWEN STEFANI FEATURING AKON 2006 14 DAKOTA STEREOPHONICS 2005 15 GROOVEJET (IF THIS AIN'T LOVE) (EXTENDED VOCAL MIX SPILLER 2000 16 PATIENCE TAKE THAT 2006 17 SAY IT RIGHT NELLY FURTADO 2006 18 GRACE KELLY MIKA 2006 19 TORN NATALIE IMBRUGLIA 1997 20 YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE CANDI STATON 1976 21 BLEEDING LOVE LEONA LEWIS 2007 22 GOLDEN BROWN THE STRANGLERS 1981 23 HEY YA! December 30, 200915 yr f*** you UK, Chasing Cars is not a good song. Er yeah it is actually  Not taking a jab at your opinion but lots of people will defintely disagree including myself :D

December 30, 200915 yr I am shocked but also not shocked at ABout You Now being so high. I knew it could be because it's still in the airplay charts now but i still wouldn't have expected it.
December 30, 200915 yr Did whoever compiling that list leave out The Killers - Mr Brightside? Because if there is one song that I initially loved that has been ruined by "death by over airplay" by the likes of Radio 1; Virgin/Absolute Radio; GWR/Heart FM; Q Music; MTV 2; Kerrang; Sky Sports; etc this decade then that song is surely it.
December 30, 200915 yr Author Just one qualm I have with this list: 46 TROUBLE PINK 2003 When the hell was this overplayed? Ever?
December 30, 200915 yr I like out of that... 2 SHINE TAKE THAT 2006 3 I DON'T FEEL LIKE DANCIN' SCISSOR SISTERS 2006 4 LOVE IT WHEN YOU CALL THE FEELING 2005 5 ABOUT YOU NOW SUGABABES 2007 6 RULE THE WORLD TAKE THAT 2007 8 I PREDICT A RIOT KAISER CHIEFS 2004 13 THE SWEET ESCAPE GWEN STEFANI FEATURING AKON 2006 16 PATIENCE TAKE THAT 2006 18 GRACE KELLY MIKA 2006 19 TORN NATALIE IMBRUGLIA 1997 21 BLEEDING LOVE LEONA LEWIS 2007 23 HEY YA! Because it's not a local radio favourite. The reason it's not there (a well as anything from 2008 or 2009) is because local radio stations haven't played it hundreds of times every week for years, which is exactly what they have done to the vast majority (if not all) of that 50. If 'Broken Strings' and 'Halo' aren't in there, then 'Mr Brightside' was never going to be...
December 30, 200915 yr Er yeah it is actually  Not taking a jab at your opinion but lots of people will defintely disagree including myself :D well i dont agree it is depressing
December 31, 200915 yr Just one qualm I have with this list: When the hell was this overplayed? Ever? I didn't think 'Trouble' was even much of an airplay hit back in 2003, let alone still played on radio throughout the decade.
December 31, 200915 yr songs I found surprising in this list; 4 LOVE IT WHEN YOU CALL THE FEELING 2005 24 SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW KEANE 2004 40 APOLOGIZE ONEREPUBLIC 2007 46 TROUBLE PINK 2003 Love It When You Call #4!?! where the hell was this played so many times, I've barely heard it on the radio...as for Keane, Everybody's Changing maybe but I don't recall blanket play of Somewhere Only We Know. Apologize should be about 30 places higher - it's been insanely overplayed, and Pink's Trouble? that didn't even get played much when it came out let alone since - obviously some commercial radio stations that I haven't heard of are big fans of it :heehee:
December 31, 200915 yr I heard LIWYC on the radio about twice a day in 2005 and I didn't even listen to the radio that much. I'm surprised it's not #2 really. I'd say it could be #1 but against what I think of it, there's no denying CC was the most 'everywhere' song of the 00s.
