I was thinking of artists who have recorded a great deal of material over a long period of time but to many people, particularly casual music fans, are only remembered for mainly one song.

For me I would suggest....

Animals - House of the rising sun

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Come up and see me make me smile

Free - Alright now

Nilsson - Without you

What other artists do you think get remembered mostly for one song, regardless of all their other hits?

You could pick almost any of the mid 90s euro-dance outfits. Haddaway (What Is Love), Gina G (Oooh Ahhh Just A Little Bit) etc...

Let me think who else

Fairground Attraction (Perfect)

Heaven 17 (Temptation)

Oasis (they have made a career out of the same song, haven't they??)

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)

Those came up very quick on my mind.

thats unfair scotty... they are by far not alone in exploiting their sound..

The Quo anyone? :naughty: Although Living On An Island was different.

Soft Cell - Tainted Love

Only by people completely ignorant of their back catalogue....

Aint you heard - Besitter, Sex Dwarf, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Torch, What.......????

Soft Cell had about 5 Top 5 Hits for goodness sake!!!!

Don't people tend to remember "Everybody's Talkin'" (the soundtrack to "Midnight Cowboy") more than that one mate....?

.... i do and i much prefer it to the overplayed and ott slushy 'without you'..

I prefer it to Without You too. Beautiful South did a good version.

Chris de Burgh - The Lady In Red

Richard

possibly hot chocolate, known for arguably one of their poorest tracks (certainly overplayed) although i really like their early 70's material.

Not necessarily all big hits but..

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven (90% of casuals would remember that song as opposed to the other many classics they made)

Scorpions - Wind Of Change (mention that group to everyone I know they come up with that song as opposed to superior stuff like Rock You Like A Hurricane etc)

Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

Eagles - Hotel California

Agree with this one for sure, just because it featured in a tv commercial it totally overshadows the far superior stuff like Wishing Well and My Brother Jake

I think people who remember people like Soft Cell, Human League, Heaven 17, Dead or Alive etc just for one song must be musically ignorant....as each and every one of these acts has released MILES better stuff than the 'hit' the dullards request year after year at the reunions.... it's little wonder Marc Almond won't even play the awful 'Tainted Love' any more. Don't you just HATE people who go to gigs just to hear that one song.... then disappear to the bar when the band plays their other, usually far superior, songs? Or, as is often the case, sit there chatting throughout the songs they're unaware of.

to be fair though russ, many younger people are too busy exploring their own music to be that bothered to explore the back catalogues. its hardly their fault that radio stations, tv ads, backing tracks etc concentrate on one large hit.

motorhead - the ace of spades

james - sit down

Maybe it's just me, but The Human League - Don't You Want Me.

trust me, that is probably their weakest track... suggest you listen to the album 'dare', which imho was the human leagues zenith.

I recently bought the Dare CD as it was in a sale for £4. Don't You Want Me is the best track on it!!!

Take it you mean You Sexy Thing? Not as overplayed as some songs but well-known partly because of Full Monty yet wasn't a No.1. Their only chart-topper was So You Win Again in June '77.
